I'm trying to pin down when the Romans incorporated the Batavians into their forces. I know they were considered "Friends of Rome" and split off from the Chatti tribe in Germany because of their close relations with the Romans. The Romans settled them in modern day Netherlands along the Rhine and nearby rivers. The sequence of events and dates are vague which I'm finding is a tough challenge. Julius Caesar was operating close to Frisian territory at one point. Besides the Batavian/Chatti question, I'm wondering if the "Germans" mentioned in this video might also include the friendly Chatti (later Batavians).

@@HostileGG of course he did. He had to. After all he was selling his entire war back home on the justification, that he was protecting the allied gauls from an invading germanic empire. Same counts for the potrayal of the germanic people, as one unified empire capeable of rivalring or even destroying rome (that's a self fullfilling prophesy if i have ever seen one), which he again used to justify the amount of troops and illegal wars he kept and fought in gaul. Additionally Arminius of the Cherusci lead a coalition of Germanic tribes against the Romans in the battle of Teutoburg forest and later on against the Roman general Germanicus, a foreign invader game them common identity and cause. Of course they did not have a national identity in the modern sense.. However I do think that the Germans did have a loose identity at least during these times, which was perhaps weakened later on with during the Middle ages.. However you can see that during the time of Arminius the Germans had at least some sort of a collective identity, the same goes for the Gauls

History Uncovered you don’t sound like it, you are saying calvary, clearly and consistently. In general, you need to do some work to create videos on par with channels like Kings and Generals or History with Hilbert. You need to be careful quoting Julius Caesar’s, “The Gallic Wars”, that you aren’t just perpetuating his own propaganda and opinions and passing them on as historical fact. For example, “they (Germanic tribes) were a savage and primitive people”. According to whom? Caesar, who was justifying continued war and militarization of the Rhein and Danube banks, largely because he couldn’t yet return to Rome because of the issues with Pompey and the senate. He wanted as many legions and as much glory and wealth to become concentrated in his provincial jurisdictions, to ultimately make him unassailable when he returned home. He wasn’t quite unassailable on his return, but he had tremendously loyal, veteran legions and had accumulated vast imperium and wealth. So, back to my point... aside from the obviously machiavellian Caesar, what other direct sources do you have to base your statement on? We know the Germanic peoples had a rich cultural and spiritual tradition from linguistics, archaeology and their descendant cultures; the Nords, Anglo-Saxons and modern Germans. We know they did tremendous works of gold and silver, much as the Celts. We know they had much of the same weapons and metallurgical technology as the Romans. We know they took great care of their appearance, hair, bathing, etc. and to the Romans generally seemed very large of stature and of ruddy complexion. Basically, they lacked - Greco-Roman architecture and Engineering -Roman political system (a system that was years away from being usurped by the Julio-Claudians and was rife with corruption.) -Roman Bureaucracy & military organization capabilities. All of that said, one only needs to examine what happened in the Teutoberg forest to see how the Germanic tribes could unite in common cause, and totally outsmart their more developed enemy. Outside of these kinds of un-Academic statements, try to lose the monotone, and have somebody listen to your releases to check for any oddly or incorrectly pronounced words. On a positive note, very good idea for content, you have a good voice if you work on the intonation, and despite some unacademic statements, your research was still good.

Thus they helped Julius Caesar Latinize the Celts and ice out themselves, Germans, who were in a process, i.e, Ariovistus & Suebi, of Germanizing all Gaul. The Germans would have to battle against the Romans for centuries before finally crossing the Rhine in 406CE and not being expelled. And this was not a date of the loss of the country but when the frontier was crossed by a Germanic tribe (Vandals and joined extras from various peoples). The Germans overan the Western Empire and did plenty of damage to the Eastern Empire, namely the Balkans, in the course of another 100 years or so after that date.

of course germans can talk to each other, because everybody understands and speaks high german. with local dialects this is different. northern german is almost another language than southern german. it still reflects the tribal nature to this day.

Isn't it curious that Germany, a Nation of Giant forests, Mountains and large Rivers & Lakes, produced such fine Cavalry?
@majungasaurusaaaa6 жыл бұрын
For western european standards they're decent.
@bremnersghost9486 жыл бұрын
Is that an endorsement then? For sure there were better light cavalry around the World, but Few finer heavy Cavalry despite the North European mud lol, Big Horses, stirrups and access to high grade, easy to work iron and abundant forests for Charcoal to make Quality steel made the Norse, Franks, English and Germanic Cavalry extremely formidable and rarely beaten, some of the few major Battle examples being Bannockburn, Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt

They were ok as a small part in an infantry dominant combined arms. Western european/mediteranean entities were infantry powers. There were contemporary cavalry powers whose heavy cav made a far greater mark on the global stage. The germans, gauls and franks produced good heavy cav because their nobility-centric honor bound warrior cultures. But they also produce good infantry for the same reasons. They're only "good" because we're comparing them to the much horse deprived italian romans. It's like comparing English heavy cav to Scottish ones. It doesn't mean the medieval English have much to boast in that department. The same thing applies to archery. The English were the only competent archer power in western europe at the time and thus get hailed as "medieval machineguns". Yet the real archer powers of the time were the vast Mongol khanates, the Ottoman Turks and the Ming . Eurocentrics forget the rest of the world exists when they discuss ancient and medieval times.

The Germanic people back then were incredibly war like, Tacitus writing that war to them was a sport of sorts, men spent a lot of time training in fighting on foot and horseback. Mostly the Germanics seemed to use Light Cavalry armed with Javelins and Spears using hit and run tactics, where they would either throw javelins and run, or dismount, fight, mount and run. But I mean combine Furor Teutonicus with a well trained Roman Warhorse that is just as fearless as its rider, and you've got hell lol

This sounds like the average American level of education . So much left out , some stuff was wrong . The most annoying thing about this , is the fact that you call these people Germans . They weren't Germans , just like the Gauls weren't French . Both these groups were mixed . After the Roman Empire collapsed they became even more mixed . That's why most ancestry dna test puts French and German together .

What a nonsense!!! Some people really need to learn history before putting something historical on youtube! Julius Caesar never used germanic mercenaries! He defeated the gaul only with his Roman legions and they were all Romans! He used sometimes some Gauls as hostage to ensure the security in the conquered part. About the Germanic he even fought against them nl the Suebes under leadership of Ariovistus.

I think you're giving too many Germanic tribes too much credit by lumping them together. And the Empire gather cavalrymen from all corners of the empire and the Republic did as well. This was the confederation that was left in shambles after Rome became dominant, Rome blames them for the overuse of welfare

German cavalary? Running beside the horse to protect them? How can a land mostly cocvered by forests have good horsemen? I guess they could not ride fast. When the Hun came later they showed some cavalary skills to them.

They were from the low countries, so not that forested at all actually. (Batavians)

Certain Germanic tribes had a heavy cavalry culture, the main weakness of Germanic Cavalry was the fact they had small and slower horses, they were effective skirmishers and when used by Romans they were given better Roman War Horses. Ceaser once wrote an account of one West Germanic Tribe that rode into battle bareback, calling anyone who used a saddle effeminate, when going into battle, poorer warriors held onto the mane of the horse to keep up with the cavalry, they would charge, jump from the horses and fight on foot, using the horses to escape when needed. Spearmen made up most Germanic Warriors however, the Spear and Shield in Germanic Culture was similar to the Toga for the Romans, it was something all boys were given as they transitioned into men as nearly every Germanic man was considered a warrior. They were brilliant at anti-cavalry techniques too, having specialised units of young men who would charge cavalry, throw themselves underneath the horses and use Seaxes and Spears to stab the bellies of the horses, a tactic also used by the Highland Scots till recently.

I wonder why there are so many comments that mention how the "huns will show them". Why is that so important? In the end the huns were still destroyed by early german heavy cavalry... maybe you should read about the battle of Lechfeld.

The Germanics comprised many types, Veneti, Helveti, marcomani, Anglos, Goths, Huns, Dinarics, Vandals, Jutes, Danes & Burgundians to name a few. Basically these make the Germans during the Roman rule, the empire comprised many of these peoples. Gallic peoples were either way, with Rome and against it. rome was multicultural with Europeans, usurpers and Levantines soon brought their demise and way of them to the empire. Most Rome was white people. History has faded this fact. The Black (NERO) or Black sun secret society was created from the ideals of the roman empire. History has demonised this social construction.

You would call romans "shitskins", as they and anyone living in italy at that time tended to be rather tanned.

Helveti were a keltic tribe that lived in nowadays german areas and the huns were anything but germanic! They were proto mongols if anything (as in nomads from the asiatic steppe). If you were misled by the ww1 propaganda, that was due to Bismarcks hun-speach during the boxer rebellion in china...

German tribes never had so much land in Europe like you showing . To 9 century most of Germany land was in Slavic hands. Lechistan was never conquered by Rome. German tribe was live on small territory only, up to 10 century all lands in that area was in Slavic hands.

>only Slavs the same as Vandals, Sarmatians, Scythians are all Slavic tribes Vandals were a germanic tribal confederation Sarmatians were related to Iranians Scythian was a catch all term. It included everything from bulgars, to Magyars, to Turks, Huns, Sarmatians, Avars, Alans and so on. Genetics are rather useless in that regard, as people integrate and assimilate - and fuck each other. "Old chronicles" - Neither of those you mentioned were big writers... Sucks if you don't know history. At least you know your Nazi propaganda.

Why are some Slavs so insecure about their identity? Like, why the fuck would a Slav try to claim some Germanic tribe, like the Vandals? Is it some kind of complex? Identity crisis? I have seen such idiots in most groups of people, but the Slavs are generally more likely, out of many others European peoples, to try this shit.
