There's a pretty good rule of thumb for the Ptolemaic dynasty. If the king was named Ptolemy, he screwed up the kingdom with a mixture of incompetence, hedonism, and apathy. If the king was kicked out and replaced by his big sister, she did a damn good job of keeping things together, but it was too late because this only happened once.

Well there a previous event where Ptolemy’s sister-wife and daughter kicked out Ptolemy and his other daughters because they were Roman puppets and ruled for a few years until the Romans restored their puppet, and executed the daughter, who was reigning as sole queen after her mother either died of natural causes or was murdered. One of the daughters who went with Ptolemy XII ‘failure’ was Cleopatra. So really she was just following in her mother and sister’s footsteps.

But then their leader returned for them and the siege ended.

I think that Caesar was genuinely saddened by Pompeys death. For years they were friends and allies and even family, you don’t just feel nothing when that person dies and you find out by having their severed (and probably rotting) head thrust in your face. Although no doubt he was also angry about being denied his surrender.
@louisswanepoel1614

Pompey was also his rival (after the triumvirate broke) and with so much emotional attachment (for lack of better English) to Pompey Caesar felt betrayed that Pompey just got shift-deleted by some lowly dude.

Louis Swanepoel That’s true but even when friends quarrel and drift apart you still miss the good old days. For a couple of years me and one of my close friends didn’t talk at all bc we’d had a disagreement and I ended the friendship. And despite my anger at what happened I was still really saddened by it because I’d lost a friend. I think that in that moment (if Caesar really did weep) he didn’t see the severed head of his enemy but the desecrated corpse of an old friend. If Caesar really didn’t know anything about his death then I doubt he would’ve been ready to shed crocodile tears on a moments notice and that those tears were genuine.

The events leading up and during the siege of the Ptolemaic royal palace of Alexandria, with Caesar and his budding new love interest Cleopatra VII trapped together inside of it for months before the Roman relief force arrives, honestly reads like something out of an adventure novel. It's just so damn epic. That's especially the case with the whole burning of the ships in the harbor that spread fire to the famous Library of Alexandria, burning part of it down. Must have been quite a sight.

alus nova that movie is incredibly cheesy, though. It didn't really accurately depict Greco-Roman civilization or the major figures of the time period. The dialogue was terribly contrived and the special effects are just meh. The costumes and settings are also terrifyingly unauthentic for the Hellenistic period and late Roman Republic. The combat depicted in the film is also laughable. Spartacus was a much better film.

The Romans had annexed Pontus and the surrounding territory after victory in the Third Mithridatic War in 63 BC. However, Caesar would make Mithridates King of the Bosporus for helping him out of this sticky situation.

I like to think that the Siege of Alexandria and the Battle of the Nile can be summed up in these words: Sink or Swim. Caesar managed to slip out of his armor when his boat capsized and swam across the Alexandrian harbor; by contrast, Ptolemy sank under the weight of his golden armor when his boat capsized and drowned in the Nile.

+Rex Galilae: it was a bit more complicated than that. She was engaged in civil war with her brother Ptolemy XIII at the time and had previously raised her own army in Roman Syria and marched it back to Egypt in order to confront him. Sneaking herself into the Ptolemaic royal palace in Alexandria and wooing Julius Caesar was a shrewd political move, along with everything else she did afterwards. You're grossly simplifying it.

We are able to distinguish between the various male rulers of the Ptolemaic dynasty by their Greek epithets, so that Ptolemy XII is referred to as "Auletes" ("the flute player") and his son Ptolemy XIII (Cleopatra's rival brother) as "Theos Philopator" ("the God Who Loves His Father"). Personally my favorite one is Ptolemy VIII's nickname, Ptolemy VIII Physcon, "Ptolemy the Fat". Lol.

There is a large number of scholars that are of the opinion that Caesar knew about the assassination plot. He was very clever so one wonders why he ignored all the evidence both human and divine. Well, 1) his epileptic fits were becoming more frequent and it was taking him longer to recover; 2) the political situation in Rome was becoming too much to handle; thus he planned to go on campaign to get out of the kitchen so to speak. When the plot came along he had a chance to go out at the peak of his career and maintain his auctoritas. He had the examples of Pompey, Cato, and others pointing to the road he did NOT want to take.

there is something close to it, HBOs rome, wich got cancelled couse was very very expensive and zipped 2 seasons worth of material into the second, the original plan were 6 seasons until the birth of cristianity (they start just after capturing vercingetorix and ends in the creation of the empire and cover , very freely and nutshelled, the events of the video) and...HBOs game of thrones the first seasons at least who acts more like actual history (but yeah, expect lots of unnecesary nudes) anyway Rome is worth a watch even with its historic flaws/changes for dramatization or needed and budget shortage on battles is always very authentic in the portrayal of everything, relationships, behaviour, neat details etc and i recoment it

Correct Octavian/Augustus might have been the most succesfull emperor. Under his rule they had the pax Romana. He was the first real emperor of Rome. But technically he was the second emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. JC was the first one ofcourse, but Augustus/Octavian was succesful in pushing the senate aside without getting stabbed in the process :D . Augustus/Octavian was adopted, like most dynastic emperors. Except for most of the general emperors ofc. Most dynasties adopted relatives of the family, cousins and such. Very rarely did you see a direct line of succession. You can see this with Caesar's real son, Caesarion. The son of Cleopatra and JC, but he still named Octavian as his heir. Guess what Octavian did to his half brother (he killed him :) ). But Cleopatra had kids with Mark Anthony too and some descendents of them did become emperor a century later. But adoption would become a problem too. The Julio-Claudian dynasty ended with Nero and Caligula. Caligula was mad, they say that about Nero too. But historians are revising his part in history. Since the senate hated him and they wrote down his history... So it is possible that what we know of Nero is extremely biased. But in theory, it could've worked better than most monarchies. You had the choice of choosing the best relative of the family to succeed you. Being the son wasn't enough.

@zeroinfinity9189
@zeroinfinity9189 6 жыл бұрын
Caesar made him king of the Bosporan Kingdom, by commanding him to declare war on his niece Dynamis and her husband Asander (who were then the ruling monarchs) to seize the kingship for himself. Dynamis and Asander were defeated by Mithridates and his army, and Mithridates became King of the Bosporus. However, after Caesar’s death in 44 BC, the Bosporan Kingdom was restored to Dynamis and Asander by Caesar’s great nephew and heir, Octavian (future Roman Emperor Augustus). Sometime after Mithridates abdicated, he died. Strait from WIKIPEDIA. In short, He was made King by Caesar with Rome's full authority but screwed over when Caesar's nephew, Octavian's succeeded Caesar. This is Ironic because Caesar also made him Emperor of Rome as well. Octavian (Augustus) occupied with another Roman civil war, probably not wanting to deal with a Bospoaran revolt, restored Bospoaran Kingdom to it's rightful owner. Again, pretty Ironic.

Maybe a true leader is someone who can keep it together during a low point? That’s something we all should be aware of; men such as myself are too weak to withstand what Caesar endured. When things are looking disastrous, we should keep in mind Caesar’s sheer force of will.

Arsinoe was a rival claimant for the throne and an enemy. Cleopatra didn't sell her out as the two were rivals rather than allies. Also that is sort of how the Ptolemaic dynasty rolled. Siblings were always plotting against one another for the throne. Cleopatra's conduct might seem ruthless to us but it was business as usual for her dynasty. Think of them as a real world version of the Targaryens.
