I purchased a key west 203 fs. Turned on the live well and the bilge pump kicked on pumping water out of the boat. HHHHmmmm did they get something mixed up. I looked around and saw they did not attach the live well hose to the live well so it was filling the bilge. I corrected the issue and attached the hose. I would go out and the bilge pump would start occasionally running. we reported the problem to key west and coty marine. They didn't see a problem and said it was rain water finding its way to the bilge while running. This occurred several more times. We brought the boat to a sand bar and nosed up to the bar. A gentleman with a bayliner called me back to my boat and said that my bilge has been running nonstop. We put the boat into the dip and it was loaded with water to the point the potty was floating and our feet where getting wet. Apparently they didn't attach the deck drain hoses to the cap side when they installed the cap. There is no access to the hoses so it had to go back to keywest to address the issues. We missed two boating seasons (we are in ne so no winter season). we where not offered a new boat, a lender boat not even an extension on the warranty. since this we have had electric problems from the connections being submerged. Key west would not honor waranty because they said its the electronics mfg. and Yamaha responsibility. Yamaha said keywest installed the outboard wrong with some kind of extension for the wires so they would not cover the warranty work either. So buying a boat I would suggest a survey to be done. Bilge access to all components, and seacocks at all connections underwater. As far as I know kw and pioneer do not have seacocks. Past that Our boat sits low port side about 3 inches. I guess there guy fell asleep behind the chopper gun. So really check the level of a boat in the water. There are much better boats from semi custom builders that will be a much better choice for a few extra bucks.

A typical "he said, she said" scenario. Each manufacturer likes to point the finger at the other guy. Disappointing for you that Key West Boats and the dealer does not stand behind its products. Manufacturers seldom know how much a dissatisfied customer can cost them not only in future sales but in referrals.

Cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) are muscle, tendon or nerve disorders that can include: sprains, strains, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and vibration syndrome. These disorders are cumulative, which means they develop gradually over a period of weeks, months and even years when there is repeated stress on a particular body part. Employees with CTDs may experience discomfort, pain, fatigue, swelling, stiffness or numbness and tingling in the upper extremities. In fiberglassing operations, repetitive tasks such as hand-rolling of freshly sprayed fiberglass parts or sanding, routing and grinding of the edges of fiberglass parts can increase the risk of developing a CTD. Risk factors in these jobs may include: forceful exertions, awkward postures, repetitiveness, static loading or sustained exertions, mechanical contact stress from tools and sharp-edges, and hand-arm vibration. Engineering and administrative controls should be implemented to reduce or eliminate the risk factors. In work areas where CTD rates are elevated, the employer must implement an ergonomics program, including a systematic method of preventing, evaluating and managing these disorders.

For those of you shitting on chop guns, how do you think they make chopped strand mat? Literally a chop gun spraying on a conveyor belt with no resin or catalyst just a binder so it doesn't fall apart. That being said, I've never used one in a mould but theoretically it's the same as mat. Your outside layer(s) in a hull is(are) always mat. Manufacturers all have different "recipies" of how often you add layers of mat, woven, cloth, or sometimes (rarely) biax. The only time I see chop guns used are on large surfaces such as a plywood bulkheads where you need glass for water protection but you don't need strength because the structure is already solid

Well, I know so little about the construction of any boat. I had a foam filled Boston Whaler sport and when the fiberglass was damaged underwater, we never knew it was soaking water. Can this foam soak water if exposed by damage to the hull? Thanks for sharing, didn't seem quite finished. Sean

I owned a KW 17CC ( bought new) for a short time and had lots of quality issues, spider cracks in the gel coat, a large crack developed in the deck after a rough water outing, loose screws coming out, pitted deck fittings, etc.. Poor weight distribution made the boat stern heavy, so much so that when I stood near the transom (172 lbs), water would come in through the deck drain holes. Moving the trolling motor battery to the front deck compartment helped. The compartments were not waterproof. On one trip, I noticed the bilge pump continuously discharging water. On checking the drain plug, I found that the cheap PLASTIC thru hull fitting for the bait well had broken off and water was pouring in. I managed to plug the hole with a fishing cork and made it back in without sinking. I have owned six boats, and I know how to take care of a boat, so that was not the problem. It was a matter of cheap construction and poor workmanship.

Foam by itself is not strong it relies on a thick layer of glass on both sides for strength (which by the way negates the so-called weight savings of foam construction). Sounds like they laid the deck too thin

Why not Mold the Fiberglass and then Gel-coat it it after? seems odd to use the paint first method. If the Gel-coat dries before the fiberglass is applied, how does it bond to fiberglass?
@andreglass5762 жыл бұрын
If the gel coat don’t have a skin coat in 24hrs it would release from the mold. That’s why you gel the mold first and a solid skin coat would make sure your boat is sturdy. Also your gel is the side you see first when you part the boat. If it’s glass first then they’ll have to repaint the entire boat. The only time they glass over molds is when you’re making a splash and that would be small sections not the entire hull

+BigWater59 just curious, what do you mean by chop gun boat?
@BigWater599 жыл бұрын
+Alex Goudas Hi Alex, It is a spraying device that chops the fiberglass as it enters the mold and mixes the resin at the same time. It is a terrible way to build a boat because the thickness is not predetermined and is completely up to the discretion of the person applying it to the mold. Maybe 1/2 in thick in one spot and 1/16 in. in another. This causes a lot of problem like soft decks, spider cracks, chipping of gelcoat and structural weakness. A quality boat is hand laid fiberglass usually cut by computers for exact thickness and strength. Nothing is left up to the person apply the glass. Hand laid goes on in layers of weave and mat fiberglass also sometimes combo weave/mat material.

Industry standard seems to be Kevlar/woven roving in vacuum bag. This seems 1980's technology. They have a great resale and reputation though, and the 1980's put out some bullet proof hulls.
@THOMASTHESAILOR6 жыл бұрын
The strength and quality is always up to the Craftsmanship/Workmanship.. Even thickness is the Sprayers whole Job.. You must have had a bad experience with a poor quality hull.. Poor Quality is cuz of the PERSON spraying.. It's NOT the strands fault, or the resin.. It's the GUY that fucked up, Not the glass.. Glass is Glass.. "People" screw up.. The sprayer in this video was black.. Do the math..
