I feel like the whole movie is driving home the point that the criminal lifestyle is unglamorous and will always end badly. Every story in PF is about people being given second chances to start their life over and leave their dangerous lives behind. Guess what happened to Vincent when he ignored the "sign from God", he got killed. Plus let's not forget how the extensive sequence were Jules and Vincent have to dispose a body. While I agree that Tarantino was influenced and inspired by Bruce Lee and his films, Kill Bill's narrative has a lot more in common with the narrative of 'Lady Snowblood' (not 'Princess Snowblood' as you called it). The green hornet theme, the costume design, and the attacking of the feet (which was a nice inclusion) is directly linked to Bruce Lee and his filmography. However, the narrative of a vengeful woman hunting down those who have wronged her off of a list, killing them one by one before ending with a battle in the snow (Kill Bill's narrative) is identical to Lady Snowblood, not Bruce Lee's life or films.
@kemisomolefhi56382 жыл бұрын
The only reference to Lady Snowblood is through Lucy Liu's character. She's the only one in the movie who completely mirrors that character, she has her own revenge sequence and even ends up dying in the snow just like in Lady Snowblood. The entire film is about Bruce Lee, and Asian cinema specifically. Gordon Liu plays Pai Mei here, Pai Mei was a well established villain in Chinese cinema and on six occasions across six or more different films he fights and is sometimes defeated by characters all played by Gordon Liu in the climax. Gordon Liu has basically faced Pai Mei like six times and Tarantino completely turned the tables and turned him into his own worst nightmare. It's beautifully symmetrical if you've actually seen the Asian movies referenced here, one other film they keep coming back to with the Japanese references is Shogun assassin or the Lone Wolf and Cub series. They pay this off in the last sequence of Kill Bill 2 when the bride is watching it with her daughter, Ogami currently holds the record for the deadliest character in cinematic history and in Kill Bill the Bride supposedly faces 88 swordsmen only to cut them all down. Ogami in Lone Wolf and Cub White Heaven in Hell kills 150 in a single sequence. It's all Asian cinema with a touch of old spaghetti western cinematography, which Bruce was a huge fan of.
@DIOBrando-ij2bp2 жыл бұрын
@@kemisomolefhi5638 That’s not even kind of true. O-Ren Ishii is just the character who is the most overt reference to a character in Lady Snowblood. But the whole movie of Lady Snowblood is to Kill Bill what The Hidden Fortress is to Star Wars. There’s other references too, like the shot of the Deadly Viper Squad looking down at the Bride in the church, and Bud’s character is similar to one in Lady Snowblood too. Kill Bill isn’t even specifically about Asian cinema. Tarantino is pulling from Asian cinema, but he’s also pulling from Italian movies, (both westerns and horror films) and exploitation and revenge films in general.

If Kill Bill was a loving homage to Bruce Lee, how does on explain the scene in Once Upon a Time? Serious question, because the two don't reconcile without a massive change in POV. Bruce Lee's project "The Warrior" (originally "Ah Sahm") was something entirely separate from Kung Fu, and pitched after Kung Fu was already in development. The concept for Kung Fu was developed by two guys called Ed Spielman and Howard Friedlander, independent of Bruce. So this idea that Bruce walked into ABC, pitched his story, then they went behind his back and stole it is not what happened at all. ABC/Warner Bros offered Bruce a deal for the project but according to Linda he wanted to wait to see how "Big Boss" did at the box office to strengthen his negotiating position. By then it was too late, the shows were too similar and Kung Fu was farther along in development so they went with it, plus he was contractually obligated to do one more movie back home, "Fist of Fury". Both Paramount and Warner Bros. were courting Bruce for a TV development deal. I got all this from Matthew Polly's biography. I love Bruce Lee. I've loved his movies since I was a kid, but the guy wasn't some god. He wasn't always the perfect, humble, always wise, infallible hero people make him out to be. People criticized Tarantino for portraying Lee as cocky and arrogant, well he auditioned for the role in Kung Fu (to play a calm Shaolin monk, who only uses violence as a last resort) by kicking in the door and waving nunchuks at the guy and telling him to feel his muscles, so...

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. That whole Bruce Lee scene in Hollywood really didn't make a bit of sense and kinda made it hard for me to buy into the rest of the movie, personally. Felt like a real low-point for Tarantino, honestly, as much as I love the guy and what he creates.

The Yellow track suit, though from Bruce's Game of Death was actually an homage to the Bruce Lee lookalikes that came after his death. QT is a fan of Shaw Brothers and exploitation Kung Fu and isn't a fan of Lee in general. Uma represented QT's favorite Lee lookalikes while the Crazy 88s dressed in Kato/Green Hornet masks are meant to be the Lee purists. It's actually his way of saying FU to the Lee fandom since he prefers other Kung Fu stars. QT never was a fan of Lee.

I really enjoyed your essay but I don't fully agree with your thesis. I don't think one can deny that, when it comes to Asians, Tarantino is at least a little racist. Also, he really loathes Bruce Lee. Just because he's friends with a few exceptions and hired a bunch of Asians in one or two movies doesn't change things (more on this later). When it comes to his more famous movies, the Tarantino "formula" is to take a schlock genre and rewrite history with it, putting the historically downtrodden or oppressed victim in the lead and using all the film tricks and homages he can muster to build them up. Django Unchained takes African American slaves, embodied in Jamie Foxx's character, and makes them self-liberators. Inglorious Basterds takes Jews of American descent and has them kill Hitler. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood takes the unsung heroes of cinema, the stuntman, and has them kill the Manson Family. Even Pulp Fiction is largely about Butch, the blue-collar boxer paid to take a dive, triumphing over the traditional heroes of gangster cinema. So why oh why, when it comes to the entire Asian martial arts action genre with its roots embedded in Bruce Lee's legacy, a legacy without which there would be no Sonny Chiba Street Fighter, did he put a white woman with virtually no martial arts experience in the lead? Can you imagine him doing anything like this to his other great cinema loves, blaxploitation, Nazi war movies, noir films, or Westerns? Here's what I think: Tarantino's gone on record declaring that he disliked how Bruce treated stuntmen. He's also no great fan of the HK film industry despite loving their movies (he suggested that casting couch culture is far worse there, hinting that producers like Raymond Chow were worse to women than his early patron, Harvey Weinstein). To create a movie that uses Bruce Lee's film legacy to build up a white woman he calls "the Bride" in order to have her kill 88 Kato lookalikes and the star of Kung Fu, David Carradine, suggests to me that he isn't honoring Bruce at all, but appropriating it to rewrite history and empower the person he sees as the true victim. In my final reading, Kill Bill isn't a Bruce Lee Revenge Film, it's a Linda Lee-Caldwell Revenge Film.
@a_lost_sketchbook2 жыл бұрын
This should be top comment. Also adding that Bruce Lee was a real person whose image shouldn't be altered for the sake of creating a movie. Tarantino did not consult the Lee family at all during the filming of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which Bruce Lee's daughter speaks out about.

Bruce Lee was a proud American who was born in California. He taught martial-arts while attending University of Washington. He met his wife Linda Emery, who was a blonde with green eyes when she became a student of his. Linda Emery became Linda Lee when they got married, and had a son and daughter. During their tenth year of marriage, Bruce Lee died from a rare brain swelling, but Linda kept her late-husband's name as her middle name when she got remarried after many years as a widow. Unfortunately their son, a rising Hollywood star Brandon Lee, accidently got shot during the making of The Crow, and passed away as a young adult. Bruce Lee, not only introduced Mixed Martial Arts aka MMA to the world, he completely changed the perspective of Hollywood action films into how we see it today. Before then, John Wayne's cowboy films were considered as an action film. China felt betrayed by all these things that Bruce Lee brought to America, especially teaching martial-arts to the Americans, but later realized how great of a man he was. These are few of the reasons why Americans respect and love Bruce Lee, aka Father of Mixed Martial Arts.

Respectfully, while the core thesis of this argument is genuinely incredibly fascinating ( and merits like, a forty minute video deep dive) as it stands this is a pretty under-baked video analysis. While you've stumbled onto a brilliant layer of Kill Bill, using this as a keystone to potentially understand more of Tarantino's unique auteur perspective is rushed through, with much of the video being the stating and restating of a core point. The video itself, editing wise, is crackerjack, but I feel there's more to this story that would improve your argument immensely, if explored. Further develop this, I truly do think you're onto something big. P.S. How does Beatrice being the likely villain of the canceled threequel impact your argument? I don't think a modern filmgoer has any shot at all of overcoming the feelings of "this is how it really happened" when they watch a film. The size and scope of most films feels larger than life, and modern technology allows just about anything to be portrayed on the screen. As they say, seeing is believing, so I don't think a human can watch a well-made film and not, subconsciously, feel like what they are watching is the Truth, no matter how objective they try to be. I feel like Once Upon A Time, Django, and Inglorious Bastards form a trilogy where the linking idea is that History, as told by film, is often ridiculous. Rather than try to tell a "true" story that reinforces traditional stereotypes and power dynamics, Tarantino instead tells a "historical" story where Jews get to burn Nazis, slaves get to slaughter slave owners, and Sharon Tate gets to live while the Manson family dies.

Quentin Tarantino is incorrectly referenced as this progressive modern day pop auteur who mastered the art of genre bending cinema. Films such as Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and Django Unchained have been used as examples of Tarantino's affinity for multi genre film making. ( Django is problematic, more on that later) In fact many people look at Tarantino as an Americam film maker who has helped reinvigorate Asian action cinema in the mainstream with films like Kill Bill vol 1 and 2. ( So I guess Wesley Snipes and the Blade films don't mean shit hmmmmm) For me, a person who has studied Asian martial arts cinema for over 25 years, Tarantino films such as Kill Bill vol 1 and 2 are problematic. In the case of Kill Bill the 4th film from director and Cinephile Quentin Tarantino these films seemed like a celebration of Asian martial arts cinema, but the truth is...they are not. The image of Uma Thurman a white actress with no martial arts training dressed in Bruce Lee's Yellow jump suit from the disrespectful unfinished exploitative film Game of Death is not homage...it's deconstruction. The Kill Bill films are known for it's references to films like Lady Snowblood and Fist of the White Lotus but the references are merely used as cinematic subterfuge to hide the fact that Quentin Tarantino doesn't want to homage Asian cinema, he wants to destroy it. If you look at Tarantino's body of work you might notice a particular genre of film that he favors and it isn't multi cultural genres like blaxploitation and Asian cinema. The recurring genre aesthetic of Quentin Tarantino is the Spaghetti Western. What is the Spaghetti Western? The Spaghetti Western is a sub genre of Cowboy films that focuses on cantankerous gun slinging white men. The term Spaghetti western is a tongue and cheek reference to the irony of Italian film makers produced western cowboy movies. (Sergio Leonne is the most popular director of these films)...do you see where I'm going with this? If you look at Tarantino's body of work you'll notice all of his protagonist are cantankerous gun totting hyper violent white men ( Vincent and Vic Vega, Butch Coolidge, Cliff Booth etc) Tarantino's characters are more John Wayne and Clint Eastwood than Bruce Lee. So when you look at Kill Bill vol 1 and 2 pay attention to who are the primary victims of violence...Asian people. O-ren Ishi ( a clear reference to Yuki Kashima the protagonist of Lady Snowblood) The crazy 88s who are a reference to Bruce Lee as Kato from the Green Hornet, Pei Mei who features prominently throughout Hong Kong martial arts movies all of these characters are killed violently by white women, specifically Beatrix Kiddo and Elle Driver.

But if this was the reason... Shouldn't the character Uma plays have been played by an asian actress instead? Like Lucy Liu?

Yah thought it was a bit of a push to conclude Asian empowerment when it was played by a blond lady. Plenty of Asian talent was assembled to realise the film, actors as well as back stage, but not the star.
