This is what happens when you sharpen any dull knife. Metal is removed so that a new edge is formed. On more traditional sharpening stones or even diamond sharpeners, the same thing happens but the metal removed is in the form of fine powder that we wash away with water or oil. This is a good video to teach us not to let our knives get so dull that so much metal must be removed to get a fine edge.

Yep. I've had a few, but they never seemed to work for me anyways. I got a whetstone kit that made my knife worse since I couldn't keep the same angle, then got a cheap guide setup that fixed that problem. A pull throufh sharpener will turn your 3" blade into a 1.5" blade in a few years, a sharpening stone will do that in 10+ years.

This is not sharpening the knife, it's peeling it. It leaves a very fragile edge that will dull very quickly. Get it sharpened rather than destroyed.

this is why i just use another knife to sharpen my knife. by sliding the knife at an angle on the backside of another knife (or another metal utensil or even the bottom of a class/ceramic glass lol) you can already sharpen it to your liking.
