I was in 4th Ave Maricopa county jail with DMX. RIP DMX moved to my home state of AZ years ago in the early 2000’s he was a very humble person. Unfortunately he did have a cocaine addiction and my neighborhood was heavily crack infested so on multiple occasions he pulled up in my neighborhood to the barber shop/smoke shop strip mall to buy crack, my high school gf’s step dad lived right behind the barber shop strip mall and also smoked crack so one day I was walking my gf home and DMX was at her house by himself no entourage chilling with her step dad getting high. A couple years later I ended up getting arrested for possession of marijuana which at the time in Arizona was a felony no matter the amount even if you had no record if they caught you with a joint it was a felony I had to spend 2 weeks in Maricopa county jail, 4.5 years on probation almost 50 drug classes and a fine of $4,856 before I got my charge dropped to a misdemeanor but while I was in 4th Ave jail I ran into DMX. I can’t remember what his charge was but he was very very very unhappy to be in Maricopa county jail he said it was the worst place he had ever been and he had done time at rikers island numerous times, he was so disturbed by the jail conditions that he did a couple news interviews complaining trying to bring awareness to the issues but the thing was that everyone already knew Maricopa county jails were the toughest jails in the country that’s what sheriff Joe Arpaio campaigned on he use to brag about how he spent more money feeding and housing the police K9’s than the human inmate. One of the jails in Maricopa county was called “tent city” and it was a jail in the middle of the desert that was built out of military surplus tents so the inmates lived in these tents on bunks the tents had no AC or heating, the temperatures in the tents would go from 130° in the summer to high 20°’s in the winter and the inmates only got a thin sweater that they either had to use for a pillow or as a blanket to stay warm they didn’t get any type of blankets to keep them warm or anything. Sheriff Joe finally bought them these big fans to put in the tents but he wouldn’t give the inmates any electricity so he made the fans powered by peddle bikes that an inmate had to peddle at all times to power the fan. You’d think a jail like that would only be for the worst of the worst but Tent City was actually the lowest security jail in Maricopa county since it was just a bunch of tents surrounded by barbed wire fences/guard towers all the other jails were all completely indoor dungeons so tent city was actually only for low security inmates in for things like DUI or unpaid traffic fines etc etc. Maricopa county is one of the only place that still has a chain gang and it’s not a punishment it’s actually a privilege because the jails are so horrible that inmates who are on their best behavior get to participate in the chain gang where they go outside and work chained together. Sorry I didn’t mean to ramble I believe your story because I know mine is true so it’s not unbelievable to me that you saw a celebrity in jail/prison.
