For me, the most impressive thing he did (if what was filmed was indeed a genuine act) was to clean up after himself by wiping the public bathroom floor down after he got it dirty, even though he appears hypothermic, as seen in 'The Divide' around min 27:05 to 27:15. A persons character will live on longer and impact more people than an FKT ever will.

I’m from the Port Macquarie area and a couple of friends of mine have been involved in local rides which he participated in too. They said it was hilarious. They would be putting in maximum effort uphill, this guy would glide past like he was going downhill and calmly offer advice such as, lower or higher gear, would be better.

I'm nearly 63 and Lachlan's my hero for multiple reasons. Firstly: we hail from the same area, ie Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. Secondly: he's such a great ambassador for our sport! Thirdly: he continues to think outside the box when it comes to taking on new challenges! Fourthly: I love his altruism! Fifth: he's just a cool, down to earth guy and now I regret not going over to him in Christchurch Airport in March and saying "Hi" (despite my wife encouraging me to!) and finally: he's one hell of a hardcore bike rider!!

Great work - I dot-watched at the time & was blown away by Lachlan's ability to ignore accepted wisdom and stick to his strategy with the stunning outcome. I had also dot-watched Joe Nation's 3rd place behind Ulrich in '23 and noted his longer stops (4.5hr+ was common) & higher moving speed. Maybe this strategy will become more popular for future editions of the grand depart?

Hi. Great video. I did some similar calcs but there was a gap in Lachlan's data on Strava that was missing between just after Platoro and Abuquiu. After making some estimates based on the terrain and other factors for that, i wound up with 202 hours 38 minutes of moving time. Average pace of 21.31kph. This gave me 16 hrs 11.5 minutes of moving time per day.

As I write this, Lachlan is going for the 'round Australia record. Yesterday he rode from Broome to Port Hedland in Western Australia, a distance of 600 kms, or 400 miles, in one day. He's averaging around 500 kms per day. At this rate he'll smash the record.

It's huge to do these events with self regulating on better sleep than previous record holders. The denial of the dangers of riding sleep deprived is staggering. To make it easier for you English speakers: Ullrich goes by Uba, and that is fine for him. I really like those comparisons a lot. And I think the best approach would try to get a motel about an hour after sunset and start again at sunrise. Of course that is not possible in the mountains, but Lachlan was close. But in the end you can’t compare different years, routes, weather, kinds of support, and so on. It would be interesting to see Uba, Lachlan and maybe Sofiane and Joe Nation in one grand depart. But in the end they all are doing great work. I was so smashed after 32h, 10.000 feet of elevation gain and less than 100miles with roughly the same amount of gear.

Different every year of course - but GD tends to be wetter/ snowier/ muddier / slower up north - but August tends to be monsoonish and brutally hot in southern CO and NM… so ITT’s in August/Sept may be a little faster if lucky with weather, but def no picnic… ride on!!

Appreciate the breakdown. Curious your thoughts on the use of an electronic derailleur on this type of ride. He was having rear derailleur issues at least as early as day 7.
@DirtyTeethMTB5 ай бұрын
Definitely pros and cons to both electronic vs mechanical- I know lots of folks successfully using both sram and Shimano electronic for big bikepacking races, TD, etc- with zero issues - I think Lachlan just had bad luck, and yes, seemed like mechanic at orange peel noticed there was an issue too. IMO, on TD, benefits of blips / remote shifter pods on aerobars and less finger strength needed for shifting is nice. I recently did AZT 300 with mechanical, and my right shifting thumb still has nerve issues… I’ll be switching to electronic for CTR … anyhoo, thanks for watching- ride on!
