I love Laundry Day as a way to keep laundry under control. I know it can feel overwhelming to think of doing all your laundry in one day, so I'm explaining how it actually works.

After a while, all the laundry piles made me realize that we had just too much clothing. Because when there's a pile on the couch, one in the washer, one in the dryer, another one on the drying rack, both hampers full AND at least a week's worth of clothes in all the closets - then we simply had way too many clothes. Decluttered ruthlessly since and voilà, the laundry monster has left the building.

Definitely a valid observation! :) Too much clothes = overstuffed closets = more laundry to wash = no room to put clean laundry away (because the closets are still full) = clean laundry piles all around the house. Since I don't have my own laundry machine (I have to share two in the basement with 15 other apartments - and the time slows means I only have time on weekends/off days), I do laundry every other week - 2 loads. So I made sure I had enough clothes for 3 weeks, no more. This way, I have a 'buffer' in case I miss a week, but it leaves enough space in the closet that it is not overly stuffed. Combined with the right size of laundry bins, this have worked magic for my (former) laundry issues!

If you’re really overwhelmed by the first laundry day, you can go to the laundromat when it’s not busy and use all the machines to get through 10 loads at a time. It can be a little expensive but if you need to get ahead quickly it can be an option.

Just be careful because laundromat dryers can be really random with the amount of heat they put out. I have actually melted polyester at the laundromat.

Make sure you unload all your machines if you do that. I was at a laundromat with my husband and our 2 year old... We had two cars (he must have met me there after work) so we decided to tag team and I showed him which washers had our stuff in them and then I got our hyperactive toddler home. A week later I was looking for our new sheets... and you can see where this is going. However the miscommunication happened, our new (thankfully cheap) sheets were long gone.

I remember having SO MUCH laundry back in the day before I found Flylady routines etc You know, before I knew about the LOL ( load of laundry ) per day. I literally had to bag up pile after pile of laundry in order to get thru all of it. I think that was about 14 plus bags, 7 yrs ago. I spent about a week straight doing all of that laundry. After tht, I found minimalism, purged hundreds of things, dozens of it being clothing, and discovered doing a load a day. Truly ✌️ peaceful now :) Oh yeah..and the laundry baskets and the 3 section sorting hamper. No more of those either now bc laundry goes straight into the machine with only one hamper beside it.

I love that you chose Monday for Laundry Day! I’m from the New Orleans area, and we often associate Mondays with Red Beans and Rice for dinner because in the days before washing machines in New Orleans, on Mondays they would start a pot of beans to simmer all day as they did their wash day!

The first laundry day for people who are very behind should be at the laundromat. Put it all in the car, take up as many machines as you need, wash and dry, possibly sort by person as you take it out of the dryer, take it home and put it in the rooms where it goes. You'll feel so much better.

Yes! I cannot make myself do ANYTHING every single day of the week, especially something I don’t like doing! I got over the hurdle of strongly disliking doing laundry initially by making laundry day the day I allowed myself to sit and read a book (my favorite thing to do) while the loads were running. Suddenly laundry day became my favorite day of the week!😂 Because of you I now make sure the dishes are done before bedtime, but I don’t cook every day and that gives me days that don’t actually feel like I’m doing the dishes. Chores just seem to be a mind game for me. Thank you for all your tips and tricks that help me fool myself into taking better care of my home and family!❤

🎉🎉 Laundry day is where it’s at!! We raised seven children, and they were assigned a laundry day and started doing their own laundry as soon as they were old enough to reach the dials on the washer. - all dirty clothes were left in a basket in their rooms until the assigned day - pretty much everything can be washed together in cold except the truly white/light things - clean clothes went back in the basket for them to fold - no sorting everyone’s socks, shirts, undies, etc. into piles 🎉🎉🎉 **the child who “forgot” his/her laundry day (and ran out of underwear) could purchase space in a sibling’s load or pay a small fee to do a load on an off day if the washer was free. (We’re not stingy, but a small penalty from time to time helps jog the memory. 😉) All of our kids (27 to 17) have thanked us for equipping them for life in this area. Especially the two sons who entered the military. 😅

When my children were little, laundry was so overwhelming for me until… I took control of their clothing. They did not have access to their clothes. Sounds harsh I know. I laid out their outfits for the week on Sunday night. Not everything that they wore for the day went into the laundry either. Underclothing always went in. Shirts that were actually visibly dirty or stinky went in. Shirts that made it through the day unscathed were worn again later. Pants were worn more than once. This substantially cut down on the volume of loads- so that I could keep up. Our kids were taught to do laundry early on. Once they mastered the skill, around 10ish, they got access to their own clothes. Amazingly once they had the chore to do, the laundry piles even lessened! Hope this can help someone defeat laundry! Good luck mamas!

Amen to not giving kids access to their clothes. Mine would never get dressed with choices. I have felt guilty reading all the “kids need independence” let them pick what they wear moms out there. I have narrowed it down to using just one week worth of clothes and as soon as they are clean I get them back into their cubby which is labeled by the day of the week. It’s working! And my kindergartener never has to think about anything when he’s getting dressed for school. It makes his mornings so much easier.

I was a single mom of two working 5 to 6 days a week… And at the time we did not have a laundry room in our home so Sundays I would pack the car up with the kids and go to an actual laundry mat and I’d bring coloring books or small toys for the kids to play at the laundromat and we would spend practically the entire day there. Eventually, we did move out to the suburbs into a house that had washer and dryer hookups. When I could finally afford to buy a washer and dryer, I could never get myself to do laundry on a daily basis… The only time I ever did it on a daily basis, was when they were babies and that was only their clothes…which I did by hand. Now my children are adults and have their own children. I’m retired, it’s just me at home and I still do all the laundry in one day. Thank you 🙏 still do “laundry day”

Thank you so much for this video. I've been married 46 years, and once a week is the only way I've ever done laundry (rare exceptions were when someone was sick to their stomach). It started out because we didn't own a washer or dryer for the first few years of marriage, and I had to either do it at my in-law's home, or later at a laundromat when my hubby was in the Navy (I used to wake him on Sunday morning at 7, yank the sheets off the bed, and race to the laundromat with all our dirty stuff to beat the crowds of other Navy families there). After 4 years of one day a week, it just became a habit. After we had 3 kids, it remained the same. Monday. As the kids got older, they would sort their stuff into piles in the hallway, strip their beds, and toss the towels in a pile. By the time school was out, I was done. Beds made, clothes put away, towels hung. I also cleaned house on Mondays. I had one set of sheets for each kid, plus one extra set, a bath towel for each for the week, and they had all the clothes they needed, but not as much as they may have wanted to have. So it wasn't overwhelming. I think kids today just have too many clothes, and think nothing of changing two or three times a day. That's ridiculous unless it's a uniform or sports related. I spent the rest of my weekdays at my kid's school, volunteering for 9 years. I did teach my kids to do laundry, but I enjoyed doing it and knowing it was all done for the week. My mom died when I was 16 and I had to learn to cook, clean house, do laundry, etc. with no direction. I vowed that my kids would at least know how to do the basics to survive. It's funny, but all 3 of my kids are now grown with families, and none of them sort laundry! But they do know how :)

Preface: LAUNDRY IS MY FAVE CHORE 👍🏻❤️😂 We have minimized our clothes so much that I can’t just do laundry one day a week. I’d run out of clothes. 😂 Also, we don’t have ANY laundry baskets in our home. When you shower or change clothes the dirties go STRAIGHT into the washer. When it’s full, I wash it. May take 1 day or 3 days. That’s how I e done it for 20 years and that’s what works for our family.

We do this, too and it just makes so much sense with small kids - sometimes they make so many messes that another load is necessary before the day is over, other times they run around nearly naked in summer and it takes a week to fill up. I used to sort laundry and have multiple hampers, different ways to wash different clothes. Then my husband took over laundry for a while after our first was born and washed everything together. Everything was absolutely fine. Since there is usually at least one accident from one of the kids in the load (body fluids and other smelly messes), everything is washed hot. In over 3 years, I haven't lost a single item (we do mostly wear cotton and cotton/poly mix, no wool or delicate fabrics, otherwise that may not work). This way it's usually two loads per week and three in winter (we live in a warmer climate, that definitely helps to keep the amount of loads low).

I began laundry day this week. It took most of the week. Not because I had that much, but because I dragged out over days. Once I began putting it away I realized it was possibly a collection of 14-21 days accumulation of clothes. I look forward to this coming week to begin with only a week's worth of clothes/towels/sheets. I should be able to get that done in a day even with a septic system. Wow! My 67-year-old body is having difficulty sleeping lately, so I was up after 3.5 hours and cleaned my closet of a black trash bag of clothes that got donated. I've decluttered many black trash bags of clothes, but more had accumulated that were not my style or color or had enough I didn't need to be remaking or resizing for more of the same. Your style of decluttering is priceless. Dawn the Minimalist had been very helpful as well, when it comes to a wardrobe for this time in my life. I might eventually even become a minimal wardrobe with no multi-sizes saved elsewhere.

So, I do all our clothing in 2 loads on one day, and then 4 days later, I do a load of sheets and a load of towels. So, that’s 2 loads twice a week. It’s simple and easy for me!

I just took your idea and started following a similar routine with your concept, 2 days ago. I realised I have 8loads a week, plus any unpredictable emergency loads (cause...you know...spills and messes happen ad sometimes you use up towels and rags more than others). And I don't want to be stuck doing all 8 loads in one day. So now, I have it planned to do 2 loads a day for 4 days, excluded emergency loads if yhey happen. Then, the other 3 days, I don't have any laundry to do unless I have an emergency load. It alsi doesn't matter what else is scheduled in my day. I know exactly which loads I'm doing each day, and which days I don't have any scheduled.

I'm a mom of six but my husband works from home. His office is next to the laundry room so he does all the washing. Our machine broke a few months ago and the first week at the laundromat I did fourteen loads. The second week I did eleven (four of my kids are adult sized.) At home the two oldest do their own so my husband is managing approximately eight loads a week. There does come a point with bigger families that one day laundry really would take two days unless you have more than one machine.

When I do my cloth diapers I have to wash them three times. Read that -three times! The first wash is 35 minutes, the second 50, and the third is a whopping 70 minutes. My old washer got it done in an hour. Yes diapers are their own day but thankfully with wearing our clothes multiple times until they are actually dirty we have a very small weekly burden.

Oh man I could never go back to laundry day. Those were the days when things were out of control. Piles of laundry that set for a week Or more. Having to sort because there's so much laundry. And overflowing hamper with dirty smelly things setting around for a week. Set in stains. I could go on and on lol now it's a mindset that as soon as I wake up I just popped the laundry on and there's only a minimum amount every day If I want a bigger load I can always find something that needs washing. We always have what we need clean. And it's enabled us to not even own a dryer anymore. We saved so much money on the electric bill that way. Just pop in the load hang dry the few items and move on with the day it's so free I could never go back to a stressful laundry day! And then if you're out of the house on that particular day that you deem laundry day you're even more behind. Plus I couldn't go a whole week because sometimes I need a certain item before a week is up now I could never go back to laundry day but I'm glad it works for some.

If you have several weeks' worth of laundry piled up around your house and you wash it all at once and then try to "put it away," you will soon come to the realization that you have too many clothes/towels/sheets to fit the designated storage spaces in your home. Washing once a week allows you to cut the amount of excess you are storing. Another benefit of having laundry under control is that you don't have to move piles of dirty clothes off the floor in order to vacuum.

There are 4 or 5 of us (depending on whether or not my OTR trucker husband is on home time), plus towels, rags, and bedding. I HAVE to do at least one load a day to keep up with it or it piles up almost as fast as the dishes. I have a set schedule of what gets done on what day, but it's open to adjustments depending on what else is going on that week. (Appointments, homeschooling, errands, etc.) Not to mention that between laundry, dishes, and showers, my poor water heater wouldn't be able to keep up if I did it all on one day LOL And after years of having to go once a week or once every other week to someone else's house or a laundromat and spend most of my day doing laundry, I relish the luxury of having my own machines to use. It takes a couple minutes to load the washer, another minute to switch it over to the dryer, and maybe ten minutes to fold and put away. It works for us but to each their own. You gotta do what works for YOU.

We are empty nesters. I have a laundry basket in our bathroom that holds one load of laundry. When that is full, I run the load. The container concept at work for laundry!!!! We have a well and septic, so one load a day or every other day is best for us. I start the laundry and then empty the dishwasher. It gets the day off to the right start. During my morning tidy etc, the washer finishes and I can move laundry to the dryer. By the time we have finished breakfast and dressed, the laundry is dry and I can put it away. If we have to get out the door faster, I run the dryer when we get home. I always add vinegar to my wash and that keeps the smell from building. I also set the washer not to open when it finishes for a delayed drying. It has made a huge difference! Our laundry are was in the basement. When the appliances died, we decided to try and find a place on the first floor to put a new mini laundry room. We bought reduced size machines and put them in our small pantry. While I hated to give up the pantry space, it has proven to be one of the best decisions ever! That was the only thing keeping our house from one floor living. It works so well!

Bcuz also it takes a lot of mental energy to go back and forth all the time on diff things. If it was possible, I would “batch” my entire life. Lol. Focusing on one thing at a time in “chunks” imo is much easier and more productive. I also feel like I’ve accomplished something as well. Like you said. It has an end and I can then get that satisfaction hit that I need so much. 😅😅

Isn’t it funny how each of us is different in which system works in our house? I am a definite load a day girl…it completely changed my life…and I fold immediately out of the dryer and then put away. If I had multiple baskets of laundry to fold, it would NEVER get done and my house would be a cluttered mess.

When i do all my loads o fold and put away the load out of the dryer after putting the new load in, so we don't get piles of laundry. It'd be overwhelming. Out of the dryer, straight away put up. I do three or four loads on those days. Everything except towels which I do on bathroom days.

I do a load every few days usually, but I ran out of detergent last week, so the ever-bigger pile of dirty clothes at the base of the washer is stressing me out! It reminds me of what it used to be like before I got it all under control! Aaahhh! Detergent is on the list for my emergency grocery store run tomorrow. Fingers crossed I get caught up by the weekend, cause I despise doing it on the weekend, since that used to be ALL I did on the weekends.

I purchased a metal contraption called "LennonLines" (in Ireland). It's a covered and louvred "trolley" for drying clothes outdoors. Because I can only fit a load and a half (depending on what items washed), I need to pace myself. I do one "laundry movement" per day. This involves hanging out what has been washed overnight, taking in some items to finish on indoor rail and loading up for the next night's wash (or tumble drying if the laundry requires it). It's a small, manageable routine and it maximises energy-saving. We've reduced numbers of towels, sheets and clothes so I don't feel like I'm fighting a flood, so to speak. There are only 2 of us in the household. I still loves Dana's approach. G Ire

Your advice to get it ALL clean once to reset your system is perfect. There's a hybrid using sorting bins: I have a 3-bin hamper in the laundry area. Each bin holds a medium load, so I sort by washing and drying characteristics as items get dirty - jeans and towels, heavy knits, lightweight knits and underwear. When a bin is full, it goes into the washer, then the dryer or line dry and gets put away. This works for me because I would seldom have a full load of anything if I did weekly laundry, and the "load a day" doesn't work for low volume households.

Back when I used to go to the laundromat, I had to have a laundry day because my husband and I both worked full-time. While it was expensive, we could get a week's worth of clothing done in the time it would take to do one load of laundry because the laundromat had so many machines. We'd fold everything there, and put everything away as soon as we came home. And we were done for the week! Once I got a machine of my own, I tried to do a load a day, because that's what the Internet says I should do. It's exhausting! Over time, I've slowly switched back to only once a week and it works better for me, but I thought I was just being lazy. For 6 days there's laundry in the hamper and on day 7, we're back to zero. Glad to see that I'm not alone in appreciating a once-a-week system. My laundry day is either on Thursday or Friday, depending on my work schedule. I LOVE starting the weekend with an empty laundry basket and I'm usually too busy to deal with the hampers during the rest of the week, anyway. Thank you for sharing this tip!

This was fun to watch as everyone is different. I can't do laundry all day because I really don't like doing laundry. I have to break up my day. Since my husband and I are both tall, a lot of our clothes hang to dry in my doorways or on a rack. I wouldn't have room in my smaller home to do all of the laundry in one day. But I can see how it does work for a lot of people. Thanks for spelling it out. I was always curious about what the advantages were.

One of my most proud adult achievements is being able to remember to put the clothes in the dryer before they sit too long and get stinky! I totally understand that's not the case for everyone and I feel for those of us still working on that. I absolutely can not spend a whole day on laundry... I don't even know if I have enough clothes to go a week without washing. I start a load in the morning, then around 2-3pm I move it to the dryer to dry- unfortunately mine takes 2 cycles to dry. Then in the morning I re fluff for a few minutes, then put it away after I start the fresh load of the day. Love your ideas, Dana. You have fantastic suggestions. ❤❤ I would hate the pile from a week of used clothes, that sounds so intimidating to me! 😭😭

I would add that by the 3rd week (possibly 2nd), "duh donations" reveal themselves. Because- everyone has access to ALL their clothes without having resorted to wearing stuff they hate because it's all that's left. Suddenly it becomes obvious which clothes are liked and worn each week, and which stay in the drawers/closets all the time. So I'd say if you do the laundry day, by week 4 or 5, at the beginning of laundry day when everything from a week is dirty, have everyone fill a box or bag or whatever of clothes from what is still clean, to donate because they're not actually using that stuff anyway. (With exception of course for off-season clothing and perhaps special purpose items within reason, but those things don't need to be in the same place as your day-to-day stuff, it's great to have a free drawer or a bin used to swap seasonals a couple times a year depending on your climate.)

So I picked the day that was the slowest day. Last Thursday was the first day and it took me 3 days. But there is no laundry sitting in my washer or dryer and I didn't worry or think about laundry the rest of the week. For most of my adult life, I've had a designated laundry day. When my son was little, I put a load in to wash at 6:30 on Sunday morning. Then I went to the supermarket while everyone else was sleeping. Came home, rotated laundry, unloaded groceries, and started pre-cooking for the week. I watched old movies while folding clothes in the living room.

Then on Monday I have both the washer and dryer going first thing and on until done.. It's 3 or 4 loads depending on sheets and towels. In my life I have done the laundromat mat thing while in the Air Force or in a new home. I was thrilled to get my stackable laundry appliance all set up at my retirement home in Alabama with the help of a neighbor and the plumber. No more trips to the laundromat! I saw a fabulous idea in the comments!!!❤ To make laundry day(s) the days where you catch up on reading or watching movies!!! I also hate laundry and I'm far behind. Some stuff is in my hamper for over a year. It all used to be easy for me when I still had a dryer and was healthy. Me and my daughter used 4 towels a day, 2 PJ'S a day, 2 sets of clothing, every day I changed kitchen linnen and rags (stuff you wash at 95°C... cooking wash) and ofcourse weekly 2 sets of bedding linnen. I had tons of wash but I had a dryer so 2 loads a day except on Sunday. (20 years ago that was still a day shops were closed and was a rest day in my country). Now I live alone, struggle with disease, have very limited dry area and hanging it out to dry is hard WORK for me instead of throwing it in a dryer (I really miss mine ever since it died). So for 30 years I had the routine of 2 loads a day. Now I do not produce enough laundry to sort it out the way it should be (to my standards) and I don't want to wash towels with bed sheets because I do not like softener on my towels but it's a MUST for my sheets. I really need to watch next video because 1 day a week does not work if you are by yourself and no longer produce as much laundry as you once did. I mostly live in my PJ'S, my bed is my living space, going outdoors 2 or 3 times a month for groceries, so wear same clothes until they don't smell fresh any longer. My whole house is a terrible and dirty cluttered mess after I had a stroke in 2015 and also the last couple of years up tot 25 days a month I can't do ANYTHING because if severe migraine attacks. I need to declutter and build new routines (which is difficult because of the migraines: no planning possible). And really need to have a new strategy when it comes to laundry because I LOVED to do it!!! Even had a family of 5 almost 20 years ago and did everything daily. Never had a dishwasher either. Struggle with depression also because my life, my motivation, even my character changed after the stroke. I'm overmedicated because otherwise I don't sleep ever since the stroke so that causes hangovers in the mornings. So available "productive" time us maybe a window of 6 hours a day. On a good day. I was the type of mom who found even time and pleasure to make my own sourdough to bake my own bread in the oven (no machine to knead the dough). Also cooked "difficult" recipes and enjoying that. My floors were swept and mopped each day. Bathrooms cleaned each day. I was organized. Now I'm kinda like ADHD, unmotivated, hypersensitivity due to the stroke and therefore all these migraine days. Chores can not take up more than 15 minutes because I need to rest for more than an hour. By now, 8 years later I feel as miserable as my house looks. Sorry for spilling my guts like this, but I'm desperate to find a way out of this. Living in an environment like my house doesn't do good for my health, physically and mentally. Keep beating myself up because deep inside I'm still a perfectionist which makes me procrastinate because "why even try" if I cannot do it as I used to (perfectly). So having a laundry day or several laundry days and the reward is movie or reading and no other chores on that day could be a great motivation!! Now need to figure out HOW to do it when I no longer have big piles to sort out. I know people living alone who have 50 items of everything which you wash at same heat like underwear and socks but do not have the space for that, whether it's clean or dirty. Btw: @Dana: bought all your 3 books but have to wait at least a week for delivery. And although my situation is different as for the average woman my age, I DO get a LOT out of your video's. Because decluttering without making a bigger mess is something that seems especially tailored for people with illness or handicaps. And you easily get emotional attachment to a lot of stuff which reminds you of who you used to be and how you functioned while you know you're health probably does not improve and you need to say goodbye to your "perfect" self and several hobbies. I really learn lot from the videos and all the comments and it's quite refreshing to see houses or areas in a home of people who are healthy: they mess it up too!!! So maybe my health problems do not DEFINE me aa a person and the troubles that came into my home after I got sick. Normal, functional people have the same problems as I do. Due to lack of time or missing organization skills they end up in the same mess. Also the "to do list: which I can no longer handle or even make one because I don't know where to start in writing down cause being so overwhelmed... I've read in comments how people have a notebook and write down very much in detail what they HAVE DONE!!! And therefore realised: A: that's a great idea and B: realizing how much of my good days or hours in a day were lost on people who wear and tear me down and all these hours were lost instead of at least trying to do something to improve my home and myself. Cannot help myself from talking so much and so chaotic but I consider it therapy, steaming myself ready to come into action mode. Just because I learn so much here in how other people deal with their issues. So far: - visible places first with mess first so you can actually SEE result. - Reward yourself with movie or reading on days with big difficult tasks. - Build up a dish washing and tidy up routine. - keep a " I have DONE" journal - personal idea: put your phone on quiet mode so people cannot steal your time or motivation!!!! And while I'm waiting for the books to arrive: I'll start with picking up some trash from a visible cabinet every time I walk downstairs for a drink or food and throw it away or put it in the place where I would seach for it (if at all). Once read somewhere to make a task so ridiculously small that even "YOU" can do it will get you somewhere. Never walk with your hands empty concept.😊

Such a fan of laundry day(s) & Dana! I work full time & always have a set day off (Tues) & that’s the day I wash clothes & towels. My second day off varies week to week. That’s the day I wash bedding, plus anything else I need before the next laundry Tues. (usually just a few items). Also, reducing our inventory of clothes, towels & bedding has helped me stay on schedule. Sure, I could wash everything on one day, but I rarely have a Tues. where I can only do laundry at home all day. This girl’s gotta grocery shop, run other errands, hit those doctor’s appointments, etc. So, two laundry days has been the successful compromise. Whatever works, works!

I grew up with "laundry days" and have continued to use them well into my 40s. I actually look forward to laundry days because, while I agree with folding laundry right out of the dryer, I get pulled away easy. So instead of folding as soon as the load is dry, I save it all up, find a good movie on Netflix, and fold away while sipping on a glass of wine after my daughter is in bed for the night. Love you, Dana, but I disagree about doing laundry once a week. The price of electricity has skyrocketed here in the UK, and drying clothes in a machine is out of the question. That means drying on a line, either indoors or out. Invariably in the UK, with our damp weather, laundry has to be hung up indoors. Washing smaller amounts every day, or every other day, means that I can get my washing dry on the same day or by the next.

Despite living alone since graduating high school (Christmas and summer breaks during college don't count because I wasn't doing my own laundry during those), I never really had laundry under control until I decluttered my clothes - I had way more than I needed and never wore half of it, and a lot of the things I did wear I still didn't like and so wouldn't keep them on for long before taking them of and throwing them in the laundry. I still live alone (been out of high school almost 11 years, college almost 7, and grad school almost 4), but I've decluttered my clothes to the point that I don't need to do laundry unless 1) the basket is completely full (with my particular washer and basket, 1 basket = 1 load; I think mine is a high capacity washer, but I don't know for sure - it's definitely significantly bigger than my mom's, which is tiny in comparison, even though I think it's a standard size), or 2) I'm running out of something. I really love the idea of Laundry Day for those who have more laundry to do than I do, or for whom one load (or two or three) a day doesn't work - if I had more laundry than I do, I would probably do a laundry day, too, because my washer is just annoying enough that I can't see myself wanting to run it more than absolutely necessary (I can't set the water fill level except on the 2 extra heavy duty cycles, which I hardly ever use, so I either have to put it on one that I know will fill the drum and still be somewhat easy on my clothes, or stand there for 5 minutes while I fill the drum with the dropdown showerhead (hose is 6 1/2ft long, with 3 inline filters adding another 1 1/2-2ft to the reach) while making sure it doesn't stop the "sensing" part of the cycle before the drum is full, otherwise it won't fill all the way for the rinse - can't walk away or the drum will overflow, so have to stand there the whole time), and because it's so big, one load a day would really waste a ton of water (b/c the less water in the drum, the harder the wash is on your clothes, so I fill it all the way every single time no matter the size of the load).

I have a 3 section hamper in the laundry room. The kids (all out of the house now) were responsible for making sure their dirty clothes were in the proper section of the hamper (lights, darks, whites) and I was responsible for paying attention to how much laundry was in the hamper. When it contained a full load, I washed. The kids were encouraged to put in clothes daily, and not wait until they were desperate. I did not have a designated laundry day, but if they dumped a week or more worth of clothes in the hamper at one time, they knew that I may not wash it right away, so they were taking their chances on having what they wanted clean. I never allowed the hampers to overflow; it was maintained regularly and I never felt like laundry was out of control. As they got older, each child was responsible for doing their own laundry. Also, once they were in about first or second grade I no longer folded their clothes for them. They were responsible for folding and putting everything away, and it was not allowed to be left in living areas or on the stairs.

This is great. I even took this a step further and have 3-section hampers in all our bedrooms! It's easy to just go collect the pre-sorted laundry and throw it in.

We do this, too! I just have 3 tall hampers in our master and everyone (3) sorts their laundry into them every day. I wash when a hamper is full and miraculously never get backed up!

I started having a designated laundry day during Covid lockdown, maybe because I needed more structure to my days. I chose Monday because in olden times, Monday was wash day. I like that historical aspect. Just as you said, once Monday is over, I don’t even think about laundry again for the rest of the week. I am not nagged by feelings of people running out of clean clothes, or laundry piling up and becoming unmanageable. If my husband says, “You’ve already washed the darks? I wanted to throw in my sweatshirt.” I say, “ Throw it in the hamper and I will wash it next Monday.” Happy bonus: dirty clothes are more likely to find their way to the hamper. I have gone one step further. We have a hamper for lights and a hamper for darks! People have learned to sort their own clothing.😊 Thank you for validation. You are inspiring!

THANK YOU DANA!!!! The one load a day plan is a total failure at my house, THIS I can do! I think I might really be an adult now that I'm excited about doing laundry?!

My only problem with laundry day is that I line dry my clothes. Usually outside, but I do have lines in the basement and a dehumidifier so everything dries pretty much overnight. There's not quite enough room for two loads on the lines in either the inside or outside location, especially if it's bedding. But I'm also an empty nest widow - so not much laundry to start with! I usually end up with a "clothes" laundry day on Friday and "towels, bedding" laundry day on Saturday. So that gives me five 'no laundry' days!

I do Friday and Saturday as well. My husband works in an office and Fridays are casual day. So I wash his business clothes on Friday those go in my dryer but everything else goes out to the clothesline Spring through Fall. During the hot summer my mattress pad dries so quickly and no damp places! I recently found an old wash stand with two sinks. That’s where the farm clothes are getting pre washed no more old bathtub on the ground! It’s amazing how much hay can get in a shirt pocket!

Laundry day for me is whenever my basket gets full. Usually once a week. I'm semi successful though if I am not focused I end up washing the same load 3 times. Lol. If I can get it to the dryer and get the dryer turned on i don't care if it sits in the dryer for a week. Goal is just getting the last load into the dryer clean and dried.. I fold hang and put away each load as it comes out of the dryer

When I had a young family, living in an apartment without a washer and dryer, going to the laundromat seemed to be overwhelming. Then I moved to a place where I had a washer and dryer and I tried to do the load a day routine but for me that felt even more overwhelming, so fast forward several years and I am living alone in an apartment complex that has a laundry room, doing laundry day makes the most sense.

I love this! I've been doing this for maybe a year now. The worst thing is if I don't quite get all done on Monday then my last load sits in the dryer for days! That's why the 1 load a day didn't ever work for me. Out of sight, out of mind.

Better the dryer than the washer! But yeah, I have the same issue of "out of sight, out of mind."

I am retired, only 2 of us since my daughter does her own laundry (she tends to do it on all on a day off). I have multiple baskets for different clothes-whites, darks, linen/bedding, delicates...I wash a load when it is full, like husband out of socks and undies, or the item is needed. I have almost always done it like this. I don't have enough laundry to do one load a day or every other day. Thanks for a different way of thinking about laundry!

Growing up, Saturday’s were clean the whole house and laundry day. Laundry day worked great for me when I was single and used machines outside my apartment, like a laundromat. Now, I do better with a load a day, if there is one. If I were to implement a laundry day, it might just be a day to focus on linens. 🙂

I've been doing laundry day forever and always worked outside the home. The only things I do mid week are cleaning rags, kitchen towels and bath towels. Since the big focus is our clothing it is nice to have that project completed in a day (or two if we're busy).

Laundry day works for me. At one point my 2 boys were home. I would still do laundry one a week, but in between I needed to do a load of gym clothes. Now that the boys are married and out of the house I still do one day a week laundry day. I usually do it in morning and just do my cleaning day too. It works for me. I have my washer and drier in my kitchen so laundry piles are all over the kitchen floor. It is OK like I said I do my cleaning routine downstairs on that Laundry day. love your content and view point on how to handle the house work. Keep it coming Katy

So, when I watched this video, I was skeptical. I had to admit that a load a day was not working for us though…..I never caught up. Last week, laundry day almost brought me to my knees. I thought that there is no way I could do that every week because of the sheer volume. Well shocker, you were right! When I sorted everything this morning, it’s just not that bad at all! Thank you!

Great, Dana. Totally agree with you! I have always had a set laundry day- every Monday. And I keep It that way “religiously”. By that I mean I don’t schedule appointments that day (unless it’s something urgent). I don’t plan lunch dates with friends. I try to plan an easy dinner for that day, (because laundry is my first priority). It works great! I learned this from my own mom- who had 7 kids. This was back when she didn’t have a very nice washer and dryer and it was harder work. When the kids were younger she had two laundry days on Monday and Thursday. So she could keep up with it better. It works well!

This is so refreshing to see.. I've never understood why people would want to drag laundry out the whole week and do it everyday.. that's awful. Especially from other youtubers that have otherwise amazing advice! I've always done a laundry day.. It sometimes changes days but always all at once and it has never felt out of control.
