Correction: I accidentally said that The Great Ace Attorney takes place in the early years of the 19th century but it actually takes place near the end of the century. EDIT (2022): I would also like to add that I overlooked an important aspect of Ace Attorney's history in my video. After completing Ace Attorney 3 in 2004, Shu Takumi tried to move away from the franchise at the time and develop what would eventually become Ghost Trick. Takumi was not initially planning to work on AA4 and was hoping to only supervise a new team that would direct the title. However, that new team ran into development troubles and Takumi ended up becoming the 4th game's writer regardless. So you could say that the "dominion effect" I mentioned in the conclusion actually began in 2004. You can read more about this period in the franchise's history in this interview: gyakutensaibanlibrary.blogspot.com/2021/07/a-long-interview-with-developers-core.html

I believe it takes place like around 1902 or 1903. Because of a certain historical figure that shows up in chapter 4. So it would be the beginning of the 20th century.

@@Rot8erConeX The Professor Layton series stands its roots on the "magic/supernatural doesn't exist" and instead finds a "scientific" explanation for the bizarre events that happen in the series (ok, sometimes even these 'scientific' explanations are quite over the top, like in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box or even in Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright itself, but it still mantains this position). On the other side, Ace Attorney embraces some supernatural elements, like Maya and Pearl Fey being able to channel the spirits of the dead, Phoenix being able to see the lies in someone's statements in the form of Psyche Locks, and many others (Athena, Apollo, Trucy... just to name a few). It looks really implausible that both series could be canon in the same universe.

Despite everything, this crossover is still one of the most ambitious and incredible project coming from both Capcom and Level-5. I still remember the day I bought and played this game for the first time, it was incredible. I grew up as a Layton fan, since in my country AA never reached as much popularity as the former, but now I want to try some instalments of the franchise, I’ll probably buy the bundle of the trilogy + the great ace attorney
@inazumatan7050
@inazumatan7050 3 жыл бұрын
While the crossover was undoubtedly a major venture for Level-5, it was fairly normal for Capcom. The company basically set the precedent for Video Game crossovers, having multiple crossover franchises under their belt at the time like Marvel vs Capcom or Project X Zone; not to mention smaller scale crossovers in their games like Dante in SMT3:Nocturne. Besides, AA is a relatively low-priority franchise among Capcom’s library - not that they treat their more successful IPs much better. In retrospect, Level-5 was likely willing to take the risk at the time because the Layton series was floundering after the conclusion of Layton’s arc in Unwound Future and the series had seen a sharp decline in sale after the move to 3DS. Level-5 was already looking for another IP to set as their flagship franchise; one of the big candidates being Yokai Watch which was in development at the time and was set for a major franchise release complete with an anime and manga. I think if this game was financially successful and the story-puzzle genre was truly ambitious , we would have seen a crossover between Layton, AA and one of Spike Chunsoft’s murder mystery games since Chunsoft already have frequent crossovers through their Mystery Dungeon series.

It was still absolute genius to use a crossover to explain the uncanny art style as the AA team struggled to adapt their art style into 3D, and outright admitted as such in the developer notes. Putting the early AA models next to Layton characters instantly creates a feeling of No Man's Land that just helps sell the art style.

@realtimeentertainment7079 i really liked it. The chronological structure of things is weird, but yeah very fun title. I think part of the disdain might just come from Takumi not being the writer alone, and sure a major thread from AJ wasn't followed up on. But the knowledge that its a new writing team that was encouraged to not stress it actually makes that more excusable than just thinking the same guy forgot or didn't feel like following up on something he wrote lol. And as someone else said, SoJ was AMAZING, both definitely in my top 3 of the main line id say.

I came to Ace Attorney through the Layton crossover, playing AA1-3 and AA5 with dropping AA4 after the first case after I enjoyed the crossover (I have yet to play AA6 but I will in 2 months when it releases on PC). Personally I don't like it when Adventure games consist of independent episodes being thrown together (like Layton's Mystery Journey did) so naturally I preferred PLvsPW:AA over the mainline Ace Attorney games. Atm I'm playing The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (7/10 chapters finished) which is why I came back to this video. I love how much this game feels like the crossover, I still find the investigation parts to be a bit lacking, but they certainly improved over the mainline games and reusing the mechanics first introduced by the crossover made me feel really nostalgic. The overarching story spanning over the entirety of the two games is obviously something I was hoping for and what I am most exited about. Very well done video! I never knew how much impact PLvPW had on the Ace Attorney franchise, beyond how some of its concept were re-used in DGS/TGAA

This video is amazing, it really shed some light in the hundreds of lose ends ive noticed in the series. Started playing in 2020 and i find it so strange that AA5 just basically ignores all concepts and basically all characters in AA4, and then why TGAA expanded on AA4 idea that was so many years before it (that btw i just love having multiple witnesses and the Juri system. I hope they cross it over to the main series as well). Also the Investigation Games existence was always kinda weird without knowing the context of their creation, really good video that makes everything clear!

This is a really well documented and edited video, the audio is also spot on. I'm not a content creator or video editor, the fact that a regular person can notice these intricacies, says a lot. Love your work. As a fan of the Ace Attorneys series, it gave me chills when you started to introduce the Great Ace Attorney chronicles.

Having played DGS1 (haven't started 2 just yet) the influence from the Layton crossover shines through incredibly strong and it does so at every level. The crossover itself was a very fun experience that totally went beyond my expectations- I was expecting something way less big in scale, I suppose- but the effect its had on the series really can't be understated. I wasn't aware of the circumstances of GS5 and GS6s development, but in hindsight that only makes them more impressive to me. It's sad that we've yet to see any conclusion to the story threads dropped in GS4, a game I personally love, but GS5 and 6 both have so much fresh air to them I worry the franchise would've stagnated if Shuu Takumi would've been the sole writer and creator in charge, considering his "conservative" style. I know the originally trilogy was developed under extreme circumstances with very little time and limited hardware, and is very beloved, but personally I think that by the third entry, the characters and concepts were starting to grow old. I don't share the common idea that the trilogy is the flawless masterpiece everyone praises it to be, the games have flaws, just like all the other entries in the series, and there was a lot to be improved on; and in my opinion the "lower-pedigree" main line sequels have both refined and expanded on the formula in many ways. I'm sad the jury system didn't appear in the main line of games after Apollo and Phoenix fought so hard to get it implemented. That most of all feels like a plot hole. But other than that, I don't know, I feel like overall it was maybe for the best. Waiting impatiently for GS7, though.

With how massive LvW's development was and everyone putting their all into it despite its hiccups, it's a damn colossal shame that it didn't sell all that well. You'd think it would sell like hotcakes with how popular both IPs are and how amazing the novelty of them crossing over was! I do hope that Chronicles sells really well so that the work and passion that went into it can be recognized along with what it represents.

After all these years there's finally a video on this rather unknown game that I've loved, and I learned so much from this video. I'm a fan of both games, especially the music. I admittingly haven't played either of the franchises completely, but this game I remember in my teens being hooked by it. The music just gives me chills. The end credit music is just amazing music and such a great fan service; the way they combined both themes into one beautifully and epically. Listening to the soundtrack is a whole another experience. I think the live orchestrated approach of level 5's music has affected Ace Attorney afterwards as well, like Great Ace Attorney has amazing grand soundtrack like PL:PW. Thanks for the video! Fun Fact not mentioned in video: the voices for the ace attorney cast in PL:PW (in the original Japanese version) are the actors who portrayed them in the live action movie, so there was "celebrity" sell points as well, which raises bars for the voice acting. That is also Level 5's way of selling their games, for example voice for Layton is Yo Oizumi (my personal favorite actor) and Inazuma Eleven, the protagonist is voiced by Junko Takeuchi (Naruto).

This explanation was amazingly detailed! It's interesting how the PL and PW crossover had such a big effect on the ace attorney series in general. I'm also very happy to have been able to play TGAA in the officially localised version, this game so far is most definitely one of my favourite Ace Attorney titles too, so I really do hope to see the rumoured Ace Attorney 7 as you've talked about in the video, to actually be developed! This video was great from the start to the end, thanks for shedding some light on this!

I'm forever appreciative for this game. I was just browsing the E-Shop since I had enough for a game and the puzzles caught my eye. I knew about both Layton and Phoenix but not really what the games were about. Even if it's a bit watered down, I didn't know that at the time and got hooked. Ended up buying the AA trilogy soon after and now it's my favorite game franchise. Glad to see DGS getting the localization it deserved finally.

This was such an informative video! I’ve been a fan of AA since its DS games, and I remember being so excited about the crossover game, since I liked the Layton games as well. I was personally kind of let down by it, since it felt to me like a Layton game featuring Phoenix Wright, with some of the best parts of the AA series getting swallowed up by Level 5, and I wish in that sense the game felt more balanced. I didn’t know about the delays that happened as a result and it makes a lot of sense, since AA 5 felt very isolated from every other title. I agree though- Spirit of Justice is one of my favorite mainline titles despite being helmed by a different production team, and while I’m still nostalgic for the sprites and midis of yore, I’m glad the series is experiencing a comeback!

Been playing The Great Ace Attorney ever since midnight on release, I was relatively uninformed on how the game worked (only knowing about the Dance of Deduction and general premise), I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the multi witness cross-examinations made a return. I did love playing the Crossover, after all. Also I know Ghost Trick isn't in focus here but I must take the opportunity to say, it's an amazing game that more people should play. I really hope there could be a remaster eventually, as a DS copy can be hard to track down and the mobile version is iOS only for whatever reason.

The ironic thing is that, by all accounts, this game is now going to be lost to time, as the development contract for it expired in 2019, and Level-5 is now going through bankruptcy (they've already shut down their Western branch). The game which lead to perhaps the most important Ace Attorney game (TGAA) since the Trilogy, all but inaccessible.

Great, great breakdown of this story. I would’ve loved to have heard more about the troubles within the development of Layton vs Wright. Nearly Nothing (if not nothing at all) from the original trailer made it in and we ended up with more of a Layton & Wright than Layton vs Wright. Would’ve loved to hear about the localization of the crossover too, as to why It took so long (compared to both franchises standards) to come to the west. Still great vídeo e great insights

Isn't it interesting how they all inspire each other? Ace Attorney was inspired by Famicom Detectives. Danganronpa was inspired by Ace Attorney. Not just that, many other franchises such as Professor Layton, Zero Escape, etc were made by developers who were big fans of Ace Attorney. I enjoyed going through The Great Ace Attorney 1&2, and I never thought I'd like such a prequel spinoff as much as I did. I hope there's an AA7 next. I never liked PL x AA, but your video definitely makes me appreciates it more, and this is certainly leagues above other Japanese crossovers like the so-called FE x SMT. I never realized Takumi made Ghost Trick, no wonder that game is so good.

And "Famicom Detective Club" itself was also inspired by "The Portopia Serial Murder Case" created by Yuji Horii (who also created the "Dragon Quest" series) for Enix on PC-6001 and Famicom, that game being sometimes considered as the first Japanese ancestor of Visual Novels. :) Indeed, "Ghost Trick" is fantastic.

I see many people who grew up with/are big fans of Layton getting to know Ace Attorney through this crossover, so just popping in as an example of the opposite way around! I got the game because it was an Ace Attorney game for me, as long as it had court cases and my favorite Ace Attorney Duo - I was hooked. I am a major Ace Attorney fan, I've played through the original trilogy a couple of times, enjoyed the hell out of Apollo's game and Dai Gyakuten Saiban, I still haven't gotten around to playing AA5 and AA6 though. I liked the crime solving aspect of the game, and while frustrating at times, I love the franchise to bits. What else is there to say? I played for Phoenix and Maya, stayed for Layton and Luke. During my first playthrough I took the game not as a crossover, but as an Ace Attorney game with a different polish. Playing through again, I realized that most of the elements I enjoyed, the storytelling, the puzzles? It was all Professor Layton, through and through. I had fun in the Witch's Court, true, but the nature of this game is leaning way more towards a Professor Layton game for me, and that is exactly how I got hooked on the franchise. I'm so upset I didn't find out about Professor Layton's games earlier, but hey! I finally have a reason to play them!
