Who would have thought this entire process from receiving the original skins to the finished product was this complex? I have always loved leather and now clearly see why it is priced accordingly. It gives one a whole new perspective and appreciation when putting on your favorite leather jacket.

This particular tannery produces rather mediocre leather, quantity rather than quality. High end leather such as vegetable tanned, uses other, more skilled techniques.

Im surprised that the skill and hard work of the slaughtermen involved in this process wasn't mentioned..The amount of skill it takes to do this is really under apreciated . For example if a slaughterman angles his knife a few degrees the wrong way can easily damage this , at this stage very fragile hide. Then the hides classification is reduced as is the price. One knifemark in the wrong place can half the price of a hide. So thumbs up to the under apreciated men on the front line.
@Hattonbank
@Hattonbank 3 жыл бұрын
That is done in the abattoir not by the tannery. Most well equipped abattoirs strip the hides from the carcass, not by knives, but by clamps attached either side of the neck which are then hydraulically or electrically pulled down, stripping the hide off the carcase in one smooth operation taking only 4-5 seconds.

This is a very condensed and simplified view of the tanning process,chrome leather takes up to 18 days from desalting to finishing, since we work with a natural product the process and formulation of chemicals has to be adjusted on a regular basis to obtain a uniform product in texture,color, physical properties,not an easy task.I 'm glad I'm retired, I worked as a technician for over 40 years.

Now, if you're a person who doesn't listen to heavy music then I can understand how bad that last bit may sound. I promise I'm not a horrible human being in real life lol Most of us aren't. We are already killing the animal for meat, might as well salvage the rest of the animal for other uses than just throwing it to waste.

I’ve never worked in the “wet” process but worked on a spray line, presses, drums and measuring in the “Central Leatherstocking region” in upstate NY! At one point probably about 100 years ago or more there were more than 400 leather shops here!

27 years in the Dry end at Eagle Ottawa Leather Company in Grand Haven Mich.Drawing Pension from them.The Grand Haven Tannery closed in 2006 after I left in 2003. It was torn down and is now an RV Park. We maxed at 200,000 hides weekly from a normal of 17,000 weekly. In the wet end, I worked wet shave, wringer,Beam House, & Hide House. Pay was $10.91 to $26.00 per hour depending on the job

@@strobx1 Can you tell me how long the hide stays in the drums?
@strobx1
@strobx1 2 жыл бұрын
@@mwankhalil5366 In the dehairing mixers is about 8 hours. The lime drums 12-24 hours. Chrome drums about 8, Color Drums about 4 hours. The dry mill drums for softening leather 1-3 hours. That is what I remember from the little time I worked in the "Wet End". I was mainly a dry end employee. I spray line, presses, drums aka mills

Same standards throughout Europe. One of the best tanneries in Europe (supplies Rolls, Bentley, R Rover, Mclaren etc) is Bridge of Weir in Scotland, but yes, Italy has more tanneries historically because of their leather goods history

I once remember one of my colleagues asking for a ride home then after I said yes when we got to my car they refused to ride with me cause my interior was leather, later found out she was vegan and told the whole office I support the “systemic murder of animals and promoting skinning animals for fun.”
