I came here to see you talk about Gomes and I'm relieved that he's getting his own video. After the first 5 mins of the Finland match I was in love with the little fella. By then he'd played a couple of those slide rule forward passes which some English fans and even Guardian journalists seem to ignore in preference to an overhit 30 yard diagonal. But these are the unglamorous passes that make you play through the thirds, that give a team momentum in possession. With the energy of Kanté and measured distribution of Kroos. Best England midfielder full debut I've seen since Glen Hoddle. I just hope Gomes gets treated better than him.

Yesterday’s game was refreshing to watch, the freedom and intuition the players were playing with 🤩. Trent was the standout player last 2 games, but he needs runners which Gordon and Grealish provided. The point is, the XI needs cohesion and balance, instead of forcing the star XI players and doing a really bad job.

Whether it was Germany in 2010, or the current Spain, what we’ve lacked in international football is an identity & cohesion. That stems from time spent together at youth level. What’s exciting is that we now have BOTH a group of players that have caps together at u21, & the same coach (who has his own system). I can’t wait to see some more of Carsley’s supporting cast - Madueke, Smith-Rowe, Gibbs-White, Foden & Palmer, complimenting what’s being built.

In Gomez we finally have a player who can sit deep and actually play a killer pass forward and knit defence and attack together (Wharton is a good shout also) but Rico Lewis really excites me (as a slightly jealous Man Utd fan!) have we seen a player that is as similar to Lahm? whether at rb, lb or midfield he seems so comfortable and has an elite football brain, it didn’t matter that he was right footed on the left because the way he plays and his body position he receives the ball in, it’s a million miles away from the cringe inducing Trippier constantly cutting inside looking so uncomfortable (having Gordon hug the touch line helps massively as well)

My daughter and I were at the match. Good stuff. TTA played well but his killer pass to oopsy ratio seemed quite high (I've never seen him live before so maybe it always is). I agree completely with your final comment: it's meant to be fun. I'd rather they were all running round with their heads on fire (in a good way) giving it a bash than frowning their way through another straight-jacket season. We'll see what happens when they hit tougher opposition, clearly, but I'm not sure we could have wished for more currently. A relational approach that rewards intelligent, skilful, energetic players: splendid!

Fantastic on the front foot for the two nations league games, but I would love to see the set up against a team that has plenty on the transition. The other thing he shares with Rodri is he was almost unnoticed "6 - solid game". I didnt watch the Ireland game, but I did manage to watch the Finland game. Although the game was still slow, I definitely found it more exciting than southgates games in the euros. It was nice to see Wingers taking on their man, the whole of euro final every time Saka got the ball In a 1v1 situation I was screaming for him to take on Cucarella but everytime he did he would cut in a pass it In field. Also crossing into the box! We managed to get players into the box, honestly I'm exciting and if Lee is going to encourage them to be brave and be more attacking I'm more than happg for him to keep the job. I know it was only Finland and Ireland but if that was Southgate in a euros game he would of played out a 0-0 draw. Trent was excellent, Gomes has a good game also, it was nice to have a CDM in there so we can push Rice more firward and do what he does with Arsenal. Rico Lewis was a great addition. We got a few more key players coming back so I'm excited to see what he does in his next set of games.

Or he can be a liability. He plays Hollywood balls that often do come off against Germany, France, Spain etc. It won't work and we loose the midfield battle. Also we haven't see him defend yet we know already he is not good at it. I hope to see a better right back replace him james.,lewis, livramento etc. Also midfield is still a problem. We still don't have a midfielder who can really but their stamp on games like Kroos, rodri. I am hoping carsley considers wharton. He is a rare midfield talent. Also rice was average against Finland. Don't rate him. Against the big teams he will slow our play down. At no 10 it has to be foden. Put him there and under carsley system he will score lots of goal Bellingham i dont know where he fits in the team. He will unbalance it. Also Hall has to be our left back. He can get forward and his defending is no worse than trent. He is young he will improve in that part. Also if kane is to play. Carsley will have to play players around who will get the best out of him. They way I see and I am sure you will agree. We have four players battling it out for one position foden, grealish, palmer and bellingham. Only one can play without upsetting the rhythm of the play.

Is a much better defender and he is a wonderful crosser of the ball. A fit reece James is probably are only better right back than him. I am not an arsenal fan either but white is much better player than trent.

Granted you did caveat the video with "it was only Ireland/Finland". And I do feel they were solid performances But I feel the caveat needed to be permanently plastered across the video just as a contant reminder. Because it was indeed only Ireland/Finland. We could do a video on two Southgate England games vs say Malta and Albania and we'd see lots of good things. The fact is, the opposition gave England lots of time and possesion and in doing so gave the team confidence to express themselves. Who remembers Foden running the show away vs Gribralter? The fact is, we dont know if this will hold up vs stronger teams until we play stronger teams.

With you On this Adam. A relief to see a bit of movement tbh. Really excited on the potential of an England squad, many of whom weren’t even near Wembley last night. Couple of years with Carsley at the reigns and we might just win something. How many changes to the squad do you think we’ll have seen by the time we get to the USA in 2026? And who?

We can win the world Cup 26. Spain and maybe France are our only real threat. Spain have yamal and a great midfield and attack but they aren't great defensively. France have the best defence in world football. Strong in midfield and attack but they are at a crossroads. The manager doesn't seem to know their best team. So are beatable. As for Germany. Some great attacking midfielders but up front they have havertz who isn't great. Also defensively you can get at them. An average Dutch team made them look ordinary. As for the rest Argentina, Portugal, Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands. They are no big. Deal. But carsley really needs to get the team blace right. Must find a left back. Trent can't play as a right back against the big team. Rice as well is too limited on the ball. As a holding play if he needs others to build the play he shouldn't be in the team. Bellingham not sure you can play him a side that looks to dominate the ball.

Saka's movement and positions was what stood out to me (along with Rice) in particular given it's been one of my criticisms of him, he never really moves from that right flank - I would have drawn a circle right where that dark red blob was from the euros heatmap. However, now that the player in that role is going to be moving around more it does lead to the question is Saka actually the best for that. My answer would be no - he looks less comfortable on the left or in the middle - Foden or Palmer would both be better, probably Palmer with Foden more competing for the Grealish role.

brilliant analysis as always 👏👏 for the first time since the 2020 euros (in 2021 🤔), i have hope and faith in this england side, and i actually enjoy watching the matches for a reason other than us winning (which, i think we all know didn't happen very much at the end of southgate's reign)

Team looked much more balanced than the Euros with players in their natural positions; what would you do if Bellingham, Foden and Palmer are all fit for the next game?

I hope this enables them to not become overrun in the midfield against the better teams. It makes total sense to practice this strategy before the big games.

I like how England is progressing under two different U-21 managers. Southgate worked a lot on chemistry and the players started getting along, he put good building blocks in place. Lee Carsley has taken that and then put in the tactics needed for the team. He put people into positions, but gave them the freedom to play as they're comfortable and England look better for it. Both managers are good for England and honestly I'm backing him to keep the job permanently

Not sure how much control you have of the graphics but there are two thing which would be good to see. An overlapping heatmap with different colours, and also it you highlight multiple players at once then choose different colours so you can easily track who has moved where. They all just look like lads in white shirts with a green circle.

Why is there any doubt that Leeeee Carsley can do this and knows first, football next, these players and International and Tournament football. Like Gareth Southgate he has nursed these players through the system, knows them as players probably better than they do themselves. He deserves a good run at this position and bonus, he's brought back Jack G.

As long as it's still Trent-Arnold and not Ben White on the right side, he hasn't fixed much. Yes, he got rid of all the wasted riches that England has, as long as you don't play your best players on the best teams it's basically the same. Having players that can't play as starters is a bad sign.

The performance of TAA alone in the last 2 games is a big factor in why Carsley should be giving until the end of the year (or even the season) in the role on an interim basis. Still not completely convinced he is the answer long term (when Pep could be available next June), but he is slowly changing my mind..
