How Legacy of Kains Creator Lost Everything

Storytelling has been an indispensable tool of human communication throughout history, and its significance persists in today's technological world. Video games, in particular, have emerged as a powerful medium for storytelling, with some games rivaling the best movies in their narrative depth and complexity. However, back in 1996, long before big-budget games became the norm, silicon Knights a gaming studio with a strong interest in academia, dared to venture into console gaming with a game called Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. It mesmerized players with its intricate dark storyline and thought-provoking narrative, arguably becoming the crown jewel of game story telling
Legacy of Kain would be subject to a host of controversy after its release, largely a lengthy lawsuit that would see Silicon Knights lose the rights to their Gothic Shakespearean magnum opus to Crystal Dynamics. But the resounding success of the first game paved the way for a beloved sequel that was equally as fascinating and captivating as its source material. But the franchise would see itself subject to more monsters throughout the years with corporate interference, drastic cuts and time restraints to future installments that even Kain nor Raziel could fix shifting through time. The duo would end up being stranded in 2003, leaving many fans of the series stuck in perpetual hope of their return. This is the Rise and Fall of Legacy of Kain.

It's their own damn fault for killing it, by not keeping it to consistent archetype. The series was schizophrenic, it flip-flopped from a Zelda clone, to Metroidvania, to action adventure, to hack and slash. It never got to build a consistent target audience and fanbase.

As much as I love the worlds that FS creates, I don't think they are the right ones to bring back something like LoK. The narrative method they use is completely different. If I had to mention a studio, I would say Santa Monica or Bioware (when they were in their prime) but today Santa Monica

@@GameStudioLore Exactly, and intelligent dialogue is essential to creating a good LoK game, while From software is the opposite of Silicone Knights when it comes to writing dialogue. Dialogues in From games are just word salad put together in the hope that people will read something deep into it. They're excellent designers, but bad dialogue writers. Story wise, I've seen channels of excellent storytellers such as VaatiVidya reconstruct the history of the dark souls games, based on subtle clues that the developers put in the games, but that's the youtuber's merit more than it is the game developer's.

I know a lot of people think it's way too late to continue the story from where it left off, but I beg to differ. With how advanced games have become nowadays, not only can they make a full reboot Spyro reignited series style, but can also continue the franchise using the shelved concepts from Dark Prophecy better then it could've been back then. Even the story can be better. It's true we may never get all of the original voice actors back, especially the voice of the Elder God, may he rest in peace. But I truly believe that the story they wanted to tell has a chance to come to fruition. And from the survey last year about a return of Legacy of Kain, I'm pretty sure it's only a matter of time before we as gamers can return to the world of Nosgoth, and continue Kain's story to its absolute fullest. #KainWillReturn

A sequel's not gonna happen. Not when the previous entry is older than majority of prospective buyers. It has waaaaay too much story baggage for someone to just jump in and the original series is way too aged to just rerelease as remasters for the modern audience. They would need a full, from the ground up remake treatment. And with how freakishly expensive to make single player, story driven games became nowadays - it's a risky proposal to say the least. If that survey did make something move in regards to this franchise, it's 99% gonna be a remake of Blood Omen. But then again I'm not quite sure about the legal situation of that particular game as I remember it was contested between Silicon Knights and Crystal Dynamics back in the day. Which is probably why it never got a rerelease.

Legacy of Kain is one of my favorite franchises. I enjoyed hearing about the backstory behind Kain's legacy! However; I have a few constructive criticisms to help improve future videos. The biggest thing I noticed was that when you listed things, or if you had a long sentence, you spoke really fast and lost some annunciation so that some words meshed together and I had to go back to listen again to understand what you said. I would recommend speaking a little slower when recording. Other than that, I enjoyed the content!

If Embracer Group does anything with this series I think their first move should be a remastered collection of all the games simply titled “The Legacy of Kain”. From there, depending on the sales success of that remaster, try their hands at a full remake of one of the original games in order to learn how to properly develop for the series and understand the necessary tone to capture. If that miraculously succeeds, attempt to continue the story of this grand legacy. I’m thinking like a business in the way I assume things will go with the acquisition. They wanna make money obviously so they’ll wanna test the true potential of the series. Hopefully something new comes from this series but if it’s not reminiscent of what came before, I truly don’t want additional stories. I’ll be satisfied with a remastered port, at least with that the series can live on rather than be forgotten.

personally i love Blood Omen 2, has the worst boss fights, but the most interesting character and world designs. I especially love the character designs. @@GameStudioLore Vampires could climb buildings assassin's creed style and looking to get the hunters separated and pick them off. The mechanics were insanely unique. Like the one vampire who could fly at all times ,and you had to be good at the flying mechanics where you could gain and lose velocity, and the faster you go the easier it would be to dive into the enemies, pick one hunter off and take them high into the air and drop them to their death. Hunters were also all very different with gadgets that could immobilize vampires and they had to work together to peel suppressing vampires off of the allies. It was honestly just very smooth and polished.

I don't like how Square Enix wanted to make LoK more explicit in Dead Sun and Nosgoth, namely by adding the F-words and Women's bare pectorals. Yes, LoK was rated M, but it's mainly because of very dark themes, bloodshed and gore, while everything else is basically PG-rated. But can we REALLY make another Dark Fantasy game/story with similar contents shown in Legacy of Kain? I guess it wouldn't hurt to try.... :/

Yeh it was poorly done. I dunno why gothic dark themes turned into naked chicks, language and other low grade things lol. I think a game could be made, there is definitely a market, studios just focus on what's working now and want a piece of the pie instead of going on another path

I’d like to see Legacy of Kain given the ‘N sanity treatment’ they could remake the games graphics and combat, whilst maintaining the original voice acting. These games always lacked time to be perfected in the development.

Very true! Its kinda like what they talked about with the new KOTOR which is like a remake but not. They talked about updating the combat away from its turn bases system, which is a whole other debate, I hope they don't. But they could look into something like that. Fresh mechanics on an old game

About half a year ago there was this survey by the developers. Around 200,000-300,000 people signed up, well above the average. So it's clear: the fans want more. It may well be that something new is coming towards our way. Let's stay curious :)

Soul Reaver 2 was also supposed to have a mission of resurrecting Vorador by returning his head to his corpse in the demon-ravaged Nosgoth. You'll note that the head the Mobius statue is holding is the real deal. But this was cut for time, so that plot hole remained open. As a result all there is to do in that time period is to leave it. But man, Square Enix can suck a fat one. Just how many franchises do they need to axe before they're satisfied? The cancellation of Dead Sun is especially odd, that game was well past the pre-prodction phase and large swaths of it are completely playable. Even the voice acting was mostly done and implemented. Not sure how familiar you are with how the industry works but cancelling a game at that point in production is just plain odd. All the money has been pretty much spent at that point. Even if their explanation is to be taken at face value (which it shouldn't because it's clearly a lie), they're basically saying "Ah, this game probably won't make us a lot of money so we're not releasing it, GUARANTEEING we lose all the money we put into it". I suspect the real reason they axed it had to do with the Tomb Raider reboot, which was being developed at the same time.

best vampire game series ever best story although unfinished in my oppinion,hopefully one day we wil get more,funny enuf they put real world stuf in the games but in the context of the game. if you dig into the history of the world and play this game serie you wil see resemblences,the elder god manipulating nosgoth through the ages and our leaders trying to manipulate and controle us through the ages,the hylden beeing some sort of extraterestrials/other dimenionals and the annunaki of our ancient past. the red lettered opening line in blood omen is actualy taken word for word from alistar crowly a real world man that was sort of a satanist,i dont know how they got this stuf and put it in the game but its kind of cool. how blood omen was made from above is also kind of the reason why its stil fun to play today and ofc the battle system. so basicly after the lawsuit crystal dynamics was a sneaky %$^%$ they say we wil create a diffirent game but ended up kind of fooling silicon knights by turning it into a blood omen sequal last minute..... i never realy like raziel much as a charc dont know why exacly he seemed to out of place in that world,kain on the other hand is pretty much my favorite vampire. i like blood omen 2 allot better then soulreaver 2 its just more fun and focuses on the vampires.

The blood Omen is not an anti-hero. This is the same mistake done when viewing Elric of melniboné. Kain is a villain in blood Omen.

Hey no problem. I understand. But usually anti-heroes still follow something along the lines of vigilantism. Kain is a selfish as hell guy hahaha atleast in blood omen in soul reaver he has seen the game he is caught in and starts the anti-hero path.

future instalment of legacy of Kain has two possible out comes like a coin if you will. if it lands on one side side the new game will be soulless safe corporate work that loses everything that made the series special if it lands on the other side it will be part of the series only in its name. but say you throw the coin enough time and one day it lands on its edge.
