I remember that scaffolding on the high street. It was there for ages. I have always preferred the name The Shires. The High Cross is something very different to me. That has moved by the way.

Looking up Silver Street at the old Il Rondo building that faced the Winston's pub. I was a DJ at the old Il Rondo building when it was called Buzby (night club) and Beehive (Pub). I had a lot of fun there before I left to live in Scandinavia.❄☃

It's an awful place now run by a mayor who doesn't understand people or care. Leicester for the few, not the many.

I fear you are correct but like the cities motto Semper Edam (always the same) I am not surprised...that why I left.

This brought back memories. What had that Cafe Nero in High Street now featured in High Street in 2024 used to be? Was it Irishes- a young mans clothes shop which would have been from about the early 70's. I think it still might have been called that in the picture of 1989 -if less influential as a beacon of a certain style in 1989? i can't quite make the name of the shop out in the 1989 photograph

Irish Menswear. Last time I looked they still had a shop in Loughborough.

Nice video, thanks mate. I know Leicester very well indeed, so this is particularly interesting. The only thing that worries me is that 1989 doesn't seem that long ago...which shows me how quickly I've aged! Funny old place Leicester, but very lovable.

The 1989 photos are of incredibly good quality, so much so that they don't actually look that old! If I had to guess, I'd have said they were from the late 90s/early 00s.
@eclecticexperience16 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment on the good quality. I have double checked and the 1989 photos were taken in November 1989. The photos are high quality scans of the negatives which is probably why they come across so well. Another check is what is showing at the Odeon, Roadhouse and the Dead Poets Society which were both released in 1989.

Makes you realise how much pedestrianisation has improved our cities from the horrors of the 1970s.

@@muckle8 I agree, traffic flowing through the city gave Leicester and other big cities a 'pulse'. Of course some will say better without the fumes but pedestrianised cities simply have a dead feel to them.

@ryszardlorenc7047 to my mind they are a fast track to a dead city , the car less streets often become full of beggars and peddlers and muggers and without traffic to disturb them are free to concentrate on bringing the area down . - THATS why it’s being done . Imho.

The pedestrianisation is horrible. Very rarely go into town now, fosse park is much better. The city just looks dirty constantly, beggars and tramps everywhere, people stopping you asking if you have a minute to talk about your energy or broadband. The city council is pretty useless and really dont invest in making the city beautiful, preferring to make it dull and drab
@ryszardlorenc70475 ай бұрын
Tell me about it ! Lived in Leicester all my life (72 now) drove buses during the 80s, 90s and early 2000s right through the middle of town ! The place had 'hustle & bustle' in those days, now it's like visiting a cemetery. By the way I too will only visit the city centre now if it's unavoidable !

I am 66 and left Leicester in 1978 or 9 about 20 years old with return visits .But i remember there being a clothes retailer for young men from at least when I was 13 or 14 on the site shown in 2024 as Cafe Nero Coffee shop. I couldn't afford the clothes at that age but a lot of my affluent schoolmates would go as it was the byword in local boys' style. I think it was called Irishes - I just cannot quite remember but I think it was there for years and years until relatively recently . I think a less influential shop with the same name is in your 1989 photo possibly but if so it was on its last legs commercially. I believe I remember Youngs cameras from my youth too
@ryszardlorenc70472 ай бұрын
@@christop997 Yes, It was just called 'Irish' if I remember right. Leicester was full of interesting shops at that time, now thanks to E-BAY and Amazon it's full of junk food shops !

I was born and raised in Leicester. It was vibrant and had character with an industrial mix. Now, it has been completely ruined by destroying old buildings, replacing them with inappropriate modern monstrosities, and a once proud city turned into a soulless shit hole.
@Evemeister124 ай бұрын
Pedestrianisation has been brilliant for the city. I enjoy being able to walk without having to watch for cars, or the pollution. The problem is that we've become so car-dependant in mentality that a lot of us don't know how to cope without them being around as much. Special dispsensation should be given to tradesmen and delivery vehicles though for practical reasons.
