So I'm speculating that she had to do some soul searching and came to the conclusion that even though she loves Lenny and wanted to marry him, she had to let him go since the marriage wouldn't be complete in her eyes without kids. Just my opinion formulated from bits and pieces she's said she called off the engagement.

She did the right thing because later she found a better man that turned into her husband. Adrienne wanted to love him, you can see her battling her own thoughts and intuition. She knew it wasn't right. Listening back to this and it is one of the worst proposals ever, the pieces and bits she mentioned are the red flags she picked up on but was refusing to acknowledge. "I know what she deserves and she's worth it but give me four months" WHAT..? Lenny was a fool and don't get me started on the orange carrots that -now we know- held no sentimental value. it's also interesting that her dad went "Even if Adrienne doesn't want you".
