His claim that he passed the Louisiana bar examination, worked for Attorney General Jack P. F. Gremillion, and closed 33 cases, was challenged by several journalists in 1978. No record has been found of Abagnale ever being a member of the Louisiana Bar and no evidence shows he ever worked as an assistant attorney general in Louisiana's Attorney General's Office. In 1978, the Louisiana State Bar Association reconciled all those who took the bar exam and concluded that Abagnale never took the exam using his own name or that of an alias; the State Attorney General's Office examined payments to all employees during the time Abagnale claimed he worked there and concluded that he never worked in the office using his name or an alias.
@Jermbot15
@Jermbot15 Жыл бұрын
That makes sense. You pass the bar exam in 1978, you get a piece of paper that says you passed the exam and you get your name in a record that nobody checks unless they have a good reason. Forgery takes care of the piece of paper, and being a conman makes sure that nobody checks the record until you're ready to leave town.

@@xPRODIGYxGAMER "He just cons people like you who desperately want to buy into his fantasy." Wow projection and condescension in a comment that didn't grasp my point. Lets examine the context here and see if we can help you figure out where you went wrong. The original post is about the complete and utter lack of evidence that he ever actually passed the bar examination or worked as an assistant district attorney. My post starts with "That makes sense" and then goes on to discuss how the certificate they give you as evidence of your passing can be forged, and lack of electronic record keeping makes double checking that certification annoying. What makes you think I want to buy into his fantasy? And while you're explaining this utter failure of your intellectual processes, decide how fair it would be for me to leap to conclusions about your dumbass.

As someone who has actually passed the bar exam in my state, this is really funny. It doesn't matter how smart you are; someone who studies for just 2 weeks won't be able to pass it. The test isn't a simple memorization / regurgitation based exam. Even if someone memorized all of the current law (which is impossible, but i digress), they would still fail the exam because they never learned the nuances of how the laws are applied differently in varying contexts. That understanding comes from practice and training, not simple book reading. Still, I loved the movie. EDIT: it turns out that he lied or fabricated almost all of his claims. They've either been unverified or actually debunked, including his claims of passing the LA bar and being employed as a doctor, peofessor, and lawyer. The guy isn't a con; he's just a liar that people believed because they wanted his lies to be true.

I’m inclined to agree with one of the above posters - it’s possible he just took the test over and over until he passed. That’s still possible here in California (reputed to be the toughest bar exam in the nation). You can take the exam as many times as you want until you pass. I’ve known people who took it six or seven times before passing, and they went on to work for good firms and have successful careers. Occasionally thieves and cheats will actually do something honest.

The public records obtained by Logan have since been independently verified by journalist Javier Leiva. This scene shows that carl was too tense as he thought frank ran again. Carl wasn't able to concentrate on his work until frank arrives. Carl cared too much about him just like his own son.

It's not if he cheated or if he passed it without cheating that eats at Carl. It's that he cannot figure out how he passed the bar. It eats at him that he cannot figure it out and wants to know the truth. That drive to know the Truth is what pushed these two men to be the best in their field.

Turns out the whole story is mostly fake and Frank Abagnale Jr's biggest grift was actually the book that spawned this movie and made him famous.

The flik was adapted from Frank Abignale & Stand Redding's book about Frank's adventures. Tom Hank's FBi character Carl was inspired by/based on real life FBi agent Joe Shea, with the caveat that Carl represents the many real FBi agents that were involved -- as a collective whole for the flik. Joe was the most known of them all

I cheated on many exams in high school and college. I'll tell you the secret but, please, don't tell anyone: I read and memorized all the relevant facts on the subject that the exam tested me on. all the answers to their questions were embedded in my brain. hahaha. completely fooled them!

Law is not hard. But it is extensive. It is more about memory and carefullness. In 2 weeks one would not have the time to watch videos on 2x speed about all those laws, let alone read about them all.

He never passed the bar exam, it was just a tall tale he told. There is zero record of him doing so or ever serving with the attorney general like he claimed. He really only claimed to be a pilot as part of his scams and no record exists that he ever flew or people at Pan Am thought he was a pilot. He just learned places would cash their checks so bought a uniform and obtained a Pan Am check where he started forging them. He got caught very quickly. Most of his "exploits" as shown in the movie were not true or greatly exaggerated. This is always the problem with these kind of crime movies. The real Frank was a small time swindler who was almost always immediately caught passing bad checks, really fooled no one, and repeatedly was convicted in America and Europe for petty thefts and passing bad checks. He was always a pathological liar and part of the reason his story caught on was the big tales he told of his "exploits" to make his experience as a fraudster seem way more exciting and make himself seem like some kind of master criminal. This helped his "legit" business after his small time exploits of banks hiring him to catch real thieves. There are crooks like him all over the place that do stuff like this. He just made up a cool story that got Hollywood interested and it was just a movie. He was small time and the crimes he did were small time, and he was young when he did them, so it was more palatable for people to think it was cool and to make a movie based on his tall tales.
