Hey Scott, I've had much better luck loading the cans in with the tab side down. Believe it or not the top of the can is stronger than the bottom. It doesn't quite make sense to me but I haven't had any cans explode since
@coreymerrill32572 жыл бұрын
It is stronger on top because it is a thicker independently made piece designed to not crack open without a lot of force. The thin metal around the cover piece ,that rips when you open the can, that preprogrammed zone around the mouth of the can is the same thickness as the body and bottom of the can to hold pressure. The body and sides are drawn I to a cylinder shape and the top is crimped on . That's why it's stronger.
@5codkiller2 жыл бұрын
The top is also flat and bottom is rounded so instead of even pressure it gets funneled towards the center of the ‘bowl’
@sberry802 жыл бұрын
You can also put a small tab of Gorilla tape over the tab, and that will help alot. Just don't have the tape sticking ove the edge where the side of the can rubs the barrel

As far as low-velocity slugs go, that diabolo shape at 10:00 worked pretty amazing, and the fin-stabilized "bomb" shape would be a close second. Both look like they have the potential to do serious damage, with the latter clearly breaking ribs, and the former being placed so well it looks like it would have impacted the torso's heart. As I've learned from Taofledermaus, most weird shapes, grooves, and fins intended to only generate spin-stabilization really don't work; projectiles either need to exit the barrel spin-stabilized or have some sort of passive aerodynamic stabilization.

The bomb shaped one has been squished lengthwise, if it was longer there would be more room for air to get forced through the fins. The concept of the can cannon started out in Israil. as a riot control device. They would load it with three "Q" Balls and fire it into crowds. Worked real well on crowds. They also used it to fire teargas grenades and frag grenades. They had a blank just for it with white paint on the tip. Very hot, would blow the gas tube off a M-16.

That Diablo pellet was fucking insane. I've got a 3D printer so I may have to give that a shot myself. Of course, I don't have a can cannon (let alone a 308 version) but I'm thinking I might have to change that. I will say that I think there are two things that will have a tremendously different result (of the more lethal variety): cans that don't have a carbonated liquid and cans that don't have a pop top. If we can get some regular soda cans that have like water or iced tea, they'll be much less prone to premature explosion. And if we can find some cans of the same size, but that require a can opener (like beans or soup or something) then they will just stay intact until they hit something HARD... Maybe we can solicit X-Products to make some soup can cannons... Oh baby...

Interestingly those monster cans kept exploding.. in an attempt to cut costs over the years, the bottling companies have cut the can sidewall thickness down until its stupid thin, at 0.00382 inch, or 3.8 thousandths of an inch, which is approximately the size of a human hair, which is crazy. But in shipping the cans would rub a hole in themselves, so they came up with a epoxy resin clear coating on the aluminum that's very abrasive resistant for a period of time.. but it still wears out quite frequently.. 👍🏼🇺🇲 Keeper of useless facts I am.. oh, I also drink bourbon and smoke cigars.. lol 👊🏼 😆

@@DutchTraveler The Can Cannon's chamber can accept a live round. I have a 5.56 model and have my blanks loaded in a different colored mag. You asked a very good question that I hadn't actually tested myself. Mine's got some buildup so the round didn't seat until the BCG slammed forward and it COMPLETELY SEATED to my shock and surprise. And yes, I just right now tested this.

@@theschwag Good to know. I know some people use clear mags for their can cannons so they can see if there is a problem with their ammo or if someone accidentally loaded a live. Guessing that if you were to shoot a live from a can cannon, it would keyhole really quick.

@@DutchTraveler I'd say we need Scott to test that for sure. Science gives me 2 possible scenarios. If there's a container of liquid loaded in and a live round goes off, there's a possibility the container will rupture from the impact of a bullet ripping through the end of the plug and tear your Cannon apart, along with possibly the rest of your rifle and part of you. Or, the expansion of gasses would push the container out just far enough to explode just outside the barrel and still damage your cannon. Well, maybe a 3rd possibility... The Can Cannon is built strong enough to handle the forces of a noncompressable liquid and it just sprays like a liquid shotgun blast.

The monster cans exploding every time is a great demonstration of how the volume of an object increases as a cubic function vs a square function for the surface area. Because the volume (therefore, liquid mass) increased so much more than the surface area, the compressive stress of being launched exceeded the compressive strength of the aluminum cylinder. No, I'm not a math or physics teacher, but a majority of my friends are.
