VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
On 9th February 2023, the Geographical Survey of India released some information that is a game changer for india!
They discovered 5.9million tonnes of "white gold" in jammu and Kashmir. Lithium is known as white gold because its going to replace oil and is the new energy powerhouse of the world.
It is one of the most critical metals used in a wide range of electronic devices, from smartphones to electric vehicles.
Until now, India has been heavily reliant on importing over 90% of this mineral from China. But this new discovery will change all that, and put india on the road to becoming more atmanirbhar!
Watch today's video to find out what makes lithium so valuable, why China is the powerhouse of Lithium in the world, and how India is planning to become self-sufficient with this new discovery!

If we put our mind, we can do it. Tatas and Vendanta have right experience in mining and metal processing. There is no patented technology for processing ( afterall, if China is in any field, the patent will be meaningless). It all depends upon the speed with which we can move ahead.

My comment is straight and long please read with patience. And please do mention in replies if you find any wrong information. I was waiting for the video to be made by Think School on this. Dhawan sir made it in UPSC orientation and Think School will make it as a business and economically oriented video. My comment is based on my own research and understanding. I consider this discovery made by Geological Survey of India as a blessing for our great nation. See firstly, few are saying we got a jackpot while few are saying we can't use that reserve as we don't have refineries. While others are claiming that even US don't have battery manufacturing ecosystem as China has. So it's close to impossible for India to build battery manufacturing capability. While few others are saying still quality is unknown. But let's get straight into it. Firstly the Geological Survey of India has established the presence of lithium in the preliminary exploration stage i.e, G3 which means it's just been declared as Lithium inferred zone which means the exact content and quality of the mineral resources are yet to be established. There are two more exploration stages remaining to declare the exact content of Li with confidence. Those two remaining stages are G2 and G1 which are General exploration stage and Detailed exploration stage respectively. If we can take the exploration from G3 to G1 in the next two to three years, it will immensely fuel the PLI scheme by enabling the complete cell manufacturing in India. But few officials are claiming that the Li found in J&K is of best quality. For example J-K Mining Secretary Amit Sharma said that, "The G3 (advanced) study of the GSI shows the presence of best quality lithium in abundant quantity in the foothills of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine at Salal village (Reasi)". He also said against the normal grade of 220 parts per million (PPM), the lithium found in J&K is of 500 ppm-plus grading. So I think quality won't be an issue for extraction. Just like any mineral Li also is in ore form. It does not occur in elemental form in nature as it’s highly reactive. It is mostly found in compound form in hard rocks. There are many known Li containing rock deposits. But Li is usually produced from pegmatite deposits as it has the largest concentrations of Li containing minerals. Spodumene (Li2O, Al2O3. 4SiO2) is derived from pegmatite rock. It has a high Li content in the form of Li2O (8.03%). So it's widely exploited for Li. Now these reserves in million tonnes are estimated based on an average percentage of Li2O in deposits like pegmatite rock. The next process is the conversion of ore to "Li Carbonates" through a series of refining and additive processes and then "Li Hydroxide" which needs more subsequent steps. "Lithium Carbonate" is used in various industries and "Lithium Hydroxide" is suited for making electric vehicle batteries. Now most importantly coming to REFINERIES. Manikaran Power Ltd. Is investing 2200 Crores to build "Lithium Hydroxide" refinery in Gujarat. "Lithium Hydroxide" is a key component used in the production of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. And more players will enter this space once the final quantity of reserves are declared. The higher official of Manikaran Power Ltd said that the processing of mined Li minerals and conversion into Li Bicarbonate requires a significant investment but it's not very complicated and can be quickly built up. So there will be many players to enter refining Li especially battery manufacturing companies like Amara Raja, Exide etc and even big Auto Companies like Tata, Mahindra might also start Battery manufacturing and Li refining. It can be a potential backward integration for the automobile companies. So I don't see refining capacity addition as a barrier for Battery manufacturing ecosystem in India. And lastly the Battery manufacturing capacity is not an issue as PLI Scheme for ACC was successful and it recieved 10 Bids proposing setting up a quoted capacity of 107 GWh. Hyundai Global Motors Company Ltd's capacity has been cancelled so remaining 9 Companies capacity is 87 GWh. A capacity of 30 GWh has been awarded for Rajesh Exports(5GWh), Ola Mobility(20GWh) and Reliance New Energy Solar Ltd(5 GWh out of 20 GWh) have been awarded. Remaining 57 GWh capacity awarding is under waitlist which includes companies like L&T, Amara Raja, Exide, Mahindra, Lucas TVS and India Power Corporation Ltd. The Scheme envisaged to attract 50 GWh capacity of Battery manufacturing. 30 GWh is awarded and agreements for setting up plants have been done and more 20 GWh capacity will be awarded soon. In near future after finding Lithium reserve I see more companies stepping into Li refining and more Battery production capacity is likely. I feel total Battery Manufacturing under PLI Coverage would be increased from 50 GWh to 75 GWh. I think Cobalt exploration should start in India soon there is huge potential in Odisha and Jharkhand Region. So I think atleast 2 million tonnes can be feasible to extract out of total 5.9 million tonnes. Recycling of Li-ion battery is very much necessary otherwise it's going to impact the environment in a harmful way. As Li is highly reactive it can catch fire very quickly. Even the electronic items which we throw in dustbins go into landfills and when landfills catch fire harmful gases will be released and the electronic devices which we throw have Li-ion batteries and that batteries will catch fire and small blasts of batteries happen which can trigger fire in entire landfill. So be responsible. Please watch Abhi and Niyu's video on this Li topic they gave a few websites where we can send our old electronic devices for recycling. Lastly for mining 1 ton of Li 5,00,000 Gallons of water is needed so water will be a big issue and the mining will have severe impact on the environment. And the place where reserves are found i.e, Reasi is on the banks of Chenab river so Iam just praying that the polluted water shouldn't go into the river and must be treated well and should be used for other purposes. There is need for improving mining techniques. I feel we must start R&D on eco friendly mining technology. What do you think please drop comments in reply section.

I pray that environment should not be impacted much and the water used in mining must be treated well and must be reused. There must be mega water treatment plants setup in entire Reasi to tackle the water issue.

India, which has mostly relied on imports for the mineral, now has hope with the finding of a large reserve. The fact that the majority of the global reserve is located in regions with severe water stress makes this discovery even more important. India is a potential replacement because the mineral requires a large amount of water for extraction and the majority of the reserves are in nations with water shortages. EVs aren't the only thing that use lithium; it's also used in the medical field, in electronics that run our phones, in solar panels, and in other renewable technologies essential for the switch to clean energy. The discovery might mark the start of a new era for the entire world as well as India. 🇮🇳

Ganesh, you are doing a great job. Such a fantastic insight into lithium has clearly told us that, just the discovery may not be the end of the story. Recent studies by GSI have discovered finds of lithium in Kolar, Karnataka as well. But unless a concerted effort with enough resources are made available, this looks like a far fetched dream. One thing you didn't mention was about the environmental impact of mining in the Himalayan range. Usage of dynamite could pose altogether a different problem. Hence it may better to explore more in southern indian plains, since they are dtsblr & not prone to earth quake and SI does not rest a displacable plates, belongs to pre cambrian era and hence more stable. So one sees more problems than just celeberste by saying Hurray. Mote than anything, another 5-10 years of successive Modi / BJP government in power alone could carry the torch of infrastructure development, otherwise like we say in the South, Govinda Govindaaa.

I have always felt that India's hostility towards China is inexplicable... The Sino Indian conflict that broke out in 1962 could have been avoided... I don't understand why many Indians feel that China wants to invade India... Can invading India bring any benefits to China? And why many Indians have a strange view of Tibet... It is evil and foolish to invade other countries' territories without reason, and shrewd and practical Chinese people will not do so... The dispute on the Sino Indian border is rooted in the Chinese belief that it is the historical territory of the Chinese people, and the Indian belief that it is the historical territory of the Indians... However, since the 13th century, Tibet itself and the disputed areas it contains between China and India are already part of China. In the late Qing Dynasty, China's weakness gave the British an opportunity... Britain hoped to eventually completely split Tibet and colonize it, just like they did in India... At the same time, the colonizers were always arbitrary in dividing boundaries, You can see the obvious artificial boundaries they have drawn in Africa and North America... the British have also drawn such a random line between their British India and Tibet, China! After China's resurgence and unification of Tibet, some religious elements who wanted independence in Tibet went to India and continued to pursue their independence cause... Can Indians imagine a province in India that wanted independence... A group of Indians who wanted independence came to China and continued their attempt to split India, I don't think Indians would be happy. At the same time, the Chinese believe that after independence, India continued to advocate for the border between the two countries, which was arbitrarily divided by British colonizers at that time, seriously violating China's territorial integrity and dignity. The Chinese and Indians have been neighbors for thousands of years, which is even older than the history of many countries; Since modern times, both countries have experienced similar exploitative fates. Chinese people naturally understand and sympathize with Indians. If it weren't for India's offense, China wouldn't be willing to confront India. After all, dealing with the United States is already enough to make us anxious... Why should India view China as an enemy country? Just because of a colonizer's arbitrary scribing back then? I hope for a peace between China and India, just like thousands of years in history. We are not your enemy country!

@@vvvs9658 but with that logic, Pakistan Bangladesh Nepal Bhutan srilanka Maldives Iran Indonesia Cambodia are also part of India because in history we had conquered them. @vvvs9658
@vvvs9658 Жыл бұрын
@@G.O.A.T_653 Firstly, you improperly expanded and confused this concept. During the Qing Dynasty, Tibet was still a part of China's historical territory. At that time, the Westphalia international system, which emerged from the 30 year European War, had become the basic norm for international communication. Therefore, in that specific time and space, discussing the historical boundaries and inheritance of various countries had legal and practical significance. And as far as I know, before modern times, there were many great civilizations and countries on the land of India, some of which had continuity and inheritance relationships with each other, but no country could fully unify the Indian region... In short, before modern times, India was just a geographical concept... the word "we" in the phrase "we had conquered them" you mentioned, At that time, "we" did not recognize ourselves as Indians... On the contrary, the Qing Dynasty knew they were Chinese, just like in the past. Secondly, it is incorrect for Tibet to rule China; I guess what you're trying to convey is that the independent Tibet State once ruled a small part of China's territory... and this does not conflict with my viewpoint. Thirdly, you believe that the People's Republic of China has invaded Tibet. This is wrong. In 1912, the Qing Emperor abdicated and issued the final edict, which merged the Five Ethnic Republics into the Republic of China; Afterwards, the Communist Party defeated the Nationalist Party in the civil war and inherited this legal system... However, the reality is that at this time, Tibet had already been separated from the jurisdiction of the central government with the help of China's internal turmoil and external forces. Therefore, New China was reclaiming Tibet; At the same time, it is also the liberation of Tibet. You can go and have a good understanding of what kind of regime the gaxag government of Tibet was before the Republic regained Tibet - a religious regime where many serfs at the bottom supported a few nobles at the top... It was already 1959, and two years later, Gagarin was about to launch into space... Fourth, I did not say that China was a saint, and I used the phrase "shrewd and practical". Fifth, you said that China has territorial disputes with the 23 surrounding countries... I think India, as the only major country in the region, can you empathize with it? It is precisely because of the long history, long borders, and complex ethnic composition that these attributes have created all of this. At the same time, it is normal to have territorial conflicts, and the key depends on how people solve them. The disputed border issues in China have basically been jointly determined by both parties through negotiation and legal means. The main remaining issues are the China India border, the South China Islands and Reefs, and the China Japan Diaoyu Islands... I have already discussed the China India issue, so I will no longer discuss it. In fact, the Diaoyu Islands between China and Japan had no problem. According to the Potsdam Declaration, Japan should have returned the Diaoyu Islands to China, but for various reasons, the Diaoyu Islands were first handed over to the United States. Until 1972, the United States turned around and handed over the jurisdiction of the Diaoyu Islands to Japan; As for the dispute between China and many Southeast Asian countries over islands and reefs in the South China Sea, I do feel that my country is a bit domineering, after all, many islands and reefs are already very close to the borders of those countries. However, it should be noted that in the past, these islands and reefs were all uninhabited. They were always there, but no one knew or claimed to own them. At that time, it was the Chinese who "first discovered" and "possessed" them. They named these islands and reefs, created maps, and delineated jurisdictional boundaries... Of course, based on natural logic, I don't think my ancestors were the first to truly discover and name these islands and reefs. They were just the first among many discoverers to develop a national civilization and have the ability to write historical books... Therefore, the historical materials that we first possessed and discovered these islands and reefs have been passed down... But these were not fair to the local indigenous people who still had no country or writing at that time... As time passed by in the 20th century, the Republic of China was established, It inherited the legacy of the Qing Dynasty... At this time, there was no international law of the sea, and the maritime boundaries between countries were also dynamically blurred. At the same time, the surrounding countries had not yet gained independence from Western rule, and the government of the Republic of China had re assigned the South China Sea and re emphasized their ownership of the islands and reefs in the South China Sea... This was also unfair to other colonized countries, who had no conditions to participate and speak out at that time. However, it should be emphasized that the South China Sea is already a controversial area, and even if China's position is removed, the islands and reefs in the South China Sea will still be a contentious point for other neighboring countries... The islands and reefs advocated by various countries now also overlap and dispute each other... China, as the only major country in the region with a first mover advantage, is naturally the most prominent, It will overshadow the controversies among others... Finally, this is my first time discussing so much content with people on KZbin... However, there are too many people who have misunderstandings about China and cannot understand the feelings of the Chinese people. I think it is necessary for me to spend a lot of time and energy explaining, even if my English is not very good... Thank you for reading this long string of text. It takes time and patience, but I hope this can provide everyone with a Chinese version of themselves, a Chinese Perspective from a Non Western Perspective.

@@vvvs9658 but we had been United under one empire. Example mauryan empire, vikramaditya empire, etc. Tibet not just rule over some Chinese states. Tibet ruled over whole China, but yes not for too long. I don't know what disputes you have with other countries. I am sorry, i don't know. But I think we should form countries on the basis of civilizations not previous dynasties. Otherwise war is inevitable. Because none gona give a single inch of territory to anybody. But yes we can collaborate, we can form a union. Let's have an open border between India and China just like good old times. ❤️ And people of Arunachal Pradesh which China claims its own territory, are more patriotic than other Indians.
