All we know is that, at Polymanga 2015, the author said he gave us a different ending because he wanted to give the fans something new that they could be excited for. Here's the quote from Polymanga 2015. "At the beginning of the anime, the manga was already written but in the end the anime exceeded the manga. That's the reason why I want to change the story because the people who had already seen the anime know the end and they will find the manga boring. ... The end of the anime was fantastic. But the end of the manga will be more fantastic."

I even remember that i said myself when mine died "she cant die from that, thats ridiculous." if i remember correctly, it wasnt even a fatal damage caused her to die in anime. I just want to tell you. After the first 2 deaths I was like: "Yep, everyone is gonna die eexceept akame, i bet the next one is Leone" and then she wasnt. And then she wasn't *again* and I'm like "Okay, they are doing the Jiraiya, the long term play, but I ain't falling for that" and then again. And again. And again. She survives and I am like "... no, I cant trust this anime anymore, but... if I learnt something from Danganronpa is that 1)dont get friendly with anyone 2)*H O P E* so I go, and I see her in ep 24. I felt... betrayed... just... forgotten in a street, with no one around her, painfully and slowly. I felt betrayed.

Manga reader here, never watched the anime. But it seems that the second half is really different. I would recommend reading the manga, the ending is for certain not the same, at least the fate of some characters. More characters survive in the manga. I wont spoil who. The pacing is different too, If im not mistaken, Chelsea dies on volume 6, and there are 15 volumes, about 1 third of the story, here Chelsea dies at ep 17, on the last third... The pacing is either rushed on the end or the anime really have more differences than I expected. Will definitively watch the anime

I thought this anime was pretty great. I see that many people thought this anime was just characters dying left and right. However, I just watching this series from the point of view of war, probably because I watched a bunch of war movies prior to this series. From the point of view of war, many people die. Not sure how they could have given more character when you had a fast pace series like this. Its been a while since I watched this, but all/most character had a motive and a background which were all tied in this one war. This movie is pretty great and fun to watch if you particularly like WW2 movies where characters come and go and without too much character drama. Every character is straight to the point.
