Indeed, that tire was essential in stopping him. In a situation like this (that joint was going to snap) I would suggest wearing a helmet with a chin, and a chest protection plate.

Hi Sam, sorry that happened to you. Bamboo is such a good material for frame building. You're right, those fibers i think they're hemp which is plenty strong for normal riding but for a jump/ pumptrack bike i'd use carbon fiber. We run a bamboo guided tour business here in barcelona, and our bikes have their joints put together with both fiberglass and carbon fiber and we use them on a daily basis and they hold up pretty well. Some of them are 8 years old with no signs of weakening or cracks. Loved the video, have a nice day everyone!

See if you guys can figure out a way to make the joint's more resist to shock. To be honest I'd totally start downhill mtb again on a bamboo frame if it could handle the shock and stress of going down what's pretty much a cliff

Actually I would never use any kind of bamboo frame or part. They cost like a normal aluminium frame and they are insecure. 400 dollar for a piece of wood is not the right price for this joke.

The bamboo didn't fail though, the weird fibre resin mix used to bond it at the nodes did. I figure a bike made from bamboo that's lugged with carbon or titanium would be really solid and comfy. I'd even go as far as saying that a titanium lugged bamboo rigid MTB for weekend trips may be one of my biking dreams. Triple triangle because why not, elevated chainstays because why not, Surly Moloko bars, Shockstop stem and seat post, the mint equipment.

He bought it second hand too. Many resins and plastics especially old fashioned ones deteriorate over time from age and they turn super brittle like in this video. They also build scaffolding in some countries using bamboo so you’re so right; that would probably be incredibly strong and lightweight. It does sound like it would make such a nice bike. I also feel like the bamboo was acting like a spring kinda on those jumps. It was launching Sam lol

Sam would love to see you ride some vintage bikes and review them compared to new stuff. I love riding the older bikes and I think it would be hilarious to see you shred them!!!

My favorite part of Sam is how he uses a hammer for everything. When I started watching mtb videos everyone was using presses and being very careful one turn at a time. Sam just beat it with a hammer until it stopped lol. I still remember the shock of watching him clean up a cut head tube on a fox 40 by rubbing it on concrete.

Made one at uni but i made a lugged alu headtube that bonded into the downtube and toptube before doing the overwrap. Looks like hemp of flax fibre overwrap btw.
