How LONG do Timber Homes Last? (BONUS: European Timber Framing)

The age-old construction method of timber framing (also called post & beam) has many advantages against things that break down a home or structure. In this video, Bert talks about the primary cause of a home being depredated: Fire, Earthquakes (& wind) and rot (or decay).
When you build a home out of heavy exposed beams, there are quite a few advantages for the longevity of the home. There must be appropriate attention to detail in the design however, things like overhangs, flashing and water protection must be addressed.
There are numerous examples of how long timber structures can last, as seen in geographical locations like Europe, Scandanavia and Japan. Certain structures have lasted hundreds, or even thousands of years!
It all depends on the climate and the design, but building a timber home is a good way to assure longevity in not only the structural integrity, but the experience of timber home living! Pass it on to your heirs and/or children. A timber home is a long-lasting testament to your personality and steadfastness.

Oh my God this story made me choke up. I have been dreaming of a Montana timber home for so long. And yes I agree, experience does pay enormous pay back. Travelled a lot during those first formative years...still figuring out the money part but I would not trade those experiences even as I yearn for financial stability. I'm from Sweden but live in Los Angeles and fell in love with Montana and timber homes when I went to a dude ranch for my 30th birthday. The memory stuck and I am now fifty and still dreaming (: Now my husband too is curious of Montana and close to nature living . So we will see if this adventure will materialize but that is my intention. I am ALL IN (:

Traditional homes 50 years? Look in Europe where you can find buildings from 1800-1900 etc. I would say a properly made house lasts at least 100 years.
