When I was in the Amazon with my then 8. year old daughter, the sugar bowl must have had about 200 or more ants in it. A survival expert from the British army who was in our group, was disgusted. My daughter said, “ No problem Martin” and dumped a spoonful, ants and all into his coffee. The ants floated to the top and she scooped them out. Everyone laughed. He drank the coffee. The group dubbed my daughter “Little Miss Amazonas”. It taught me how resilient children can be.

Been my experience high fats and acids are the ones to watch EXP dates closely. Fruits and tomatoes will eat through the cans very soon after EXP Date, and anything with High fats also have a short life. Rice, I just vac seal mine in 3 pound bags to keep bugs out. Fruit, P-nut butter, tomato products, and oils all are watch carefully items. Canned meats are normally good for 4 to 5 years or longer though. Forever items are salt, sugar, and honey. Properly stored wheat has 30 plus year life, and most freeze dried stuff is 20 years.

Great list! BUT, word of caution to anyone who is given home canned food items. Be VERY cautious about using food others have canned if you don’t know their processes. Make sure you know that they’ve followed the USDA’s center for home food preservation guidelines for safe canning and that they know what they’re doing. There are so many new people canning now and so many have just gone rogue with what they’re doing, it’s scary. They are playing Russian Roulette with their own lives and the lives of those they feed with their home canned food. Better safe than sorry when it comes to botulism or other food borne illness. Do it right or don’t do it all. Thanks for the list. 💕

I need to respectfully differ regarding dented cans. The ones with a dent on the top edge (or bottom if not a one piece can) are the ones to watch out for. Those dents are the ones that would compromise the seal. A dent in the side of the can, unless on the obvious side seam (which many do not have these days), is rarely harmful. I worked in a discount grocery store and we were checked by the USDA to make certain that we weren't selling canned food with dents in the top edges. They were super strict on this so we were very careful. Yes, if a can has a deep dent in the side, use it soon. I just bought several dented cans at Walmart today for half the regular price. Very good deal I think. Will use them soon-ish. Or maybe not..lol!
@sunnihunny3 жыл бұрын
@@AcornHillHomestead ha.. im 65 also! No telling how many dented cans I've used through the years. And still here to tell it!! Thing is.. if a dent in the side of a can punctures it deeply enough to reach the contents, those contents would be oozing out. And I'm 100% serious about how thoroughly we were checked by the USDA. Really kept us on our toes!

I also store canned goods in cardboard boxes/trays that they come in from the store. After having a couple cans leak, I lined the box with aluminum foil inside and up the sides with one piece of foil. It keeps the spilled contents from leaking down onto other cans. Using one piece keeps the goo from seeping through the cracks. Just a tip that works for me.

Instant freeze dried coffee lasts 20-25 years, and whole, green (un-roasted) coffee beans will last almost indefinitely. Whole roasted coffee beans and ground coffee have a shelf life, as they will go rancid. Ground coffee kept in an unopened sealed package in the freezer: good up to 2yrs, max. Ground coffee in an opened package stored in the freezer: approx 5 mos (at best). For very short term storage it’s fine, but for longer you may want to consider keeping freeze dried instant.

We bought the big thick 7 lb. water containers and filled them up with drinking water and store those in the cool cellar. You could get the smaller ones if you can't lift them or don't have a dolly. I know that my grandparents are home canned foods for at least 20 plus years… I wouldn’t recommend it quite that long, and it depends what it is, if it’s peas, corn or beans I’m a little more leary of eating it… but I have canned pears that my sister canned that is 7 years old. I would check if it’s sealed, if the lid is rusty, etc… if it looks all good, I would eat it in a heartbeat… but 41 year old canned foods might be a stretch… 😂 the jars could be washed and reused… some of the older jars are heavier and built to last! 😄 store bought canned foods, it’s in Metal so I check more if it’s tomato products or fruit… I LOVE Spaghetti sauce in glass jars vs the plastic, it really can last!

Tawra and mom, thank you so, so, so very much for this information. I was getting ready to toss out some canned goods I went through last night. Just because of sell by or use by dates. Even my kids go by this bunch of BS. I remember growing up the only way we knew if canned goods were not ok to eat was if the top of the can had a little pooch on the top then it was or had gone bad and not to eat it, toss it out. Now days my kids go through my cabinet and say this has expired and toss it. The only thing I worry about is tomato sauce, stewed tomatoes, basically tomato 🍅 products. My grandma canned everything growing up, that is how I got my knowledge of canning and going to get cannery with my mom, grandma, and aunts once or twice a year. The only thing none of them canned at the cannery or at home was tomatoes or tomato based products. Back then there were people dying from bacheloism from canned tomatoes. So we Never canned anything tomato. How ever we did make a few things and freeze them. Thanks again for all your information today. I truly appreciate it.

I just finished off a bag of rice, not prepped, just frozen in it's original bag and then I dried it out but I left it in its original bag, no 02, no mylar, no jars no nothing and the rice was 5 or 6 yrs old. Maybe older?I have tons of the stuff.I tell people just don't store the stuff safely..!

I just love your videos, you and mom are GREAT!!! I have my reference books, they are invaluable!!! A little off topic but I must share with you all- I have a book from the 20s that was my grandma’s , “ every use for apple cider vinegar”, it’s so great! According to the book it’s about the only thing you need to live a long life! Lol 😂😂😂

A very good video. Unfortunately, many cans ordered from Walmart are dented. The big cans for popped corn are good protection. Good Luck, Rick

I vacuum sealed some Nido powdered milk, so it lasts up to two years stored like this? I am so glad I found you girls! I was worried about how long all the canned soups I have would last past best by date. Keep up the great information you share.❤️❤️
