How long does it take to charge? This is the most common question I get, both from skeptics as well as purely interested, and maybe even potential EV buyers. It's a valid question, and one that deserves some research before you own an EV. In this video I do my best to outline the various charging options and how each compares speed wise. I demonstrate the Level 1 (110V regular wall outlet), Level 2 (220V home/destination charger), and Level 3 (DC fast "Supercharger") in real world use, showing some of the data you can see on-screen and in the Tesla app while you charge. Also, the common uses for each of the different ways you can charge. As a bonus, I added some footage of when we took some friends of ours on a short drive and launched the Cybertruck once. Thanks for watching, engaging, commenting, and subscribing!

When I get the question “how long does it take to charge?” My initial flippant answer is “I’m not sure, it’s full every morning.” For road trips my answer is “It’s usually ready to go before I finish my cup of coffee.” Apart from long road trips, it’s just not an issue. If you’re frequently driving more than 250 miles a day, its a hassle- let’s be honest, EV might not be for you. But for the occasional road trip between urban areas, its no problem. The only issue is going on long trips between rural areas where you don’t want to show up at 10% because there aren’t superchargers there, so you need to make an extra stop along the way so you have juice to drive around at your destination and also get back to a supercharger on the way home.

Yeah I totally agree with what you said. If I can tell the person is obviously just a hater I may go with my initial sarcastic remark, but usually it’s a genuine question, so I try to give a thoughtful answer. It’s just tough when sometimes I think they expect a simple answer and as an engineer, I unfortunately find it impossible not to elaborate on the nuances. lol. I edited out so much rambling from this video it wasn’t even funny. Anyway, back to your point. There has really only been one or two times in the past year that I felt slightly inconvenienced by when I had to charge and that was when I was arriving home with a fairly low SOC, and needed to turn around and head somewhere else relatively soon. In that case I ran over to the local supercharger here in town (there only one here). Most days between charging at work and at home I don’t ever even have to think about it. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

Thanks, I appreciate that! The wrap is called Matrix Black. It’s a 3M wrap.

Who makes that wrap on your truck and what’s the color? It Rocks! I want to order the same. Regards

The color is called Matrix Black, it’s made by 3M, and is the 2080 variant. (They also had a 1080, which I think was the predecessor but may still be available in some places). It does have a slight texture to it. I appreciate it, I really like how it turned out.

Mobile connector - 32amps. Wall connector - 48amps Meaning they are not the same and wall connector will charge significantly charge faster than the UMC 32amps.

Is the all black unit specific to the Cybertruck? I bought the travel charger a couple of months ago and its gray. Yours looks much better tbh

I’m not 100% sure, it’s been months since I took my Model Y mobile connector out of the bag. Maybe though, now that you mention it.

What is the difference between the charger that has the 110, and 240V option, and the 240V wall charger? Like, if you have the 240 plug, plugged into the Tesla's charger in the truck bed, will that charge at full level 2 speeds? Or will it just charge slightly faster than level 1?
@barrywilliams4476

I believe the highest current possible from the mobile connector with the 220 plug adapter is 32A. But I’m not 100% sure if you can get that from the bed outlet. I haven’t tried that combo yet, but I need to. The full level 2 wall connector can do 48A max as long as you’re on a 60A breaker (80% of breaker rating). Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

@@barrywilliams4476 32 Amps at 220 Volts seems like a lot! I daily drive a gas car, and even though my gas car is actually cheaper to drive than an EV, due to my electric being $0.65 per KWh on off-peak hours.. It's really expensive. But a Chevy Bolt, or a Leaf sounds like a fun EV. Can just plug it in to the 110V outlet.

@@extralock1045 wow, $0.65 off peak is really high. What is your off peak rate? I want to say the max power draw from the bed outlet is around 9-11 kW, but I have not checked that myself. The mobile connector can use regular 110, as you saw in the video, but youre looking at only about 1 kW charging speed. (Super slow, a few miles gained every hour)

@@barrywilliams4476 I don't mean the bed outlet, I mean the plug you keep in your bed, the one that you charge the truck with, the 110V, and 240V plug. You can gain about 1.2 KW of charging speed with 12 amp though, can't you? If I'm not mistaking you had it at 10 Amp. My way off peak is $0.35 per KWH, from midnight to 4 AM. Then it's $0.65 per KWH from 4:01 AM, to 4 PM. Then it's $0.75 from 4:01 PM, to midnight. At least from my understanding. But if I use more electric, I go into a higher tear, and it will be raised on all the rates by $0.10 per KWH, so if I had an EV, it would be even more sadly..

@@extralock1045 those rates are crazy! What area do you live in? You may be right on the 10A setting down the mobile charger, I didn’t intentionally throttle it, but I don’t remember what it defaulted to
