I’m the city manager in charge of off duty police operations for the city of Burbank. There were off duty police paid for by the production team for this PR shoot of this vehicle. Mr Leno was under escort by these officers through the streets and was ask to drive in the middle of two lanes for most of the journey during filming.

If there's ever a segment of our road-using population that needs to be electrified; its trucking. There's many "feel", "enjoyment" and "leisure" arguments to be made for passenger cars (specifically manual transmission cars, which I will own until I die), motorcycles and consumer-owned vehicles, but trucking should be as fast, cheap and easy-to-use as possible. Yes, with any drastic change, people will fight it (see any change management lesson LOL), but this thing can/will be revolutionary.

A huge issue here is weight….. I am a small fleet owner and driver myself. In the U.S. the max gross weight a truck and cargo can be is 80,000 pounds without special permits. My truck weighs 17,000 pounds, they mentioned the load Jay was pulling at over 50,000 pounds. The trailer he was attached to weighs less than 10,000lbs, so the truck alone is over 40,000lbs. That’s almost 3 times the weight of my truck. That being said, it would take 3 of these to haul the max weight alone that I can haul. Now multiply the cost of this truck times 3 which would be somewhere close to $1.5mill. in tractors to move what I can move and my truck was $190,000 new. I could put (7) trucks like mine on the road hauling freight for the same initial cost without factoring in how much more freight I could haul across the country with seven rigs. Now, which avenue would save the customer or end user the most money? I like the idea of electric trucks if they are cost effective. These are nowhere cost effective for anyone, anytime soon. The Freightliner version of this truck is $500 - $600,000 to initially purchase. The numbers just don’t make sense.

I’m a truck driver too. I agree 100%. Also, keep in mind the distance for OTR (over the road) my truck runs out of fuel at 1,000 miles. I fuel it back up in 5 minutes or less. These teslas run out at 400 miles. It would take a very long time to recharge. You’ll never get to the receiver on time. You’ll be days late!

The math has been done on this. The load deficit is between 4-6k lbs when compared to a diesel truck. The Tesla gets an extra 2k for being an ev. According to the statistics, 80% of the loads on the road fall within the Tesla semi's capabilities.

As a retired trucker drove around a million miles plus from Canada and all the USA. The only downside I see is being in the center of the vehicle. When backing up it’s always done if possible with watching where you put the trailer out the drivers side window. Sitting in the center makes you so dependent on cameras that may be covered in dirt/snow/ice. Volvo trucks were the first to bring aerodynamic trucks to North America with the VN models. I actually drove one of the first bunch of VN610 models in Canada. Drivers hatted them at first, but I loved it compared to my old peterbilt truck. Made driving a truck a pleasure, warm and quiet. My only concern is the seating position and maybe the distance.

We do this already with diesel trucks. Power Only is the agent of trucking that pulls event loads from stadium to stadium. About 4 years ago I was moving them regularly with a 30 year old truck without issue. Drove right into the, Saints in Louisiana I want to say, and parked up next to the other 2 trucks also getting loaded. Most stadiums already have indoor and underground docks, so driving into the stadium itself wouldn't really be a benefit since there aren't docking bays in the middle of a stadium floor, heh. That said, it is already extremely common for indoor industries to use battery powered equipment whenever possible. Forklifts and material handling equipment at warehouses and plants are most commonly battery electric. It makes working conditions significantly better. Large equipment though, and mining and industrial equipment is still diesel powered due to the technology for them being strictly electric hasn't been developed yet. While we CAN do it, these machines cost multiple millions of dollars and cause massive amounts of loss when the equipment fails. Diesel and hydraulic technology is well developed and reliable, so until battery electric has proven itself reliable with a few decades of real world use in each segment, diesel heavy equipment will continue to be used.

Also, how is the electricity made to power those trucks - we burn coal and have to use more energy to produce and install the infrastructure for EVs. It's all a lie. Elon would be focused on developing green energy technology, not selling false promises and manipulating legislation (bribe) to have the tax payer subsidize his companies, if he was more concerned with helping the environment than being the richest person in the world.

Heavier than regular Class 8 = can't carry as much product= no sales. Most "major trucking companies" don't have Tesla orders .. Well the typical EV car requires over 100,000 of earth to be dug for each battery, this semi probably requires well over million pounds of dirt to be moved for its battery pack. The Tesla Cyber Truck battery weighs 3,100 pounds(my dad's 1985 Dodge Ram long bed truck weighs 3,800LB) and the Cyber truck's total weight is 7,100 pounds(how is that environmentally friendly). Now these batteries will need to be replaced every eight to ten years(Cyber Truck battery costs over $20K to replace) and not much in recycling happening, so what happens to all these batteries at the end of their cycle life? And lets not forget that EV's are 20% harder on tires than ICE vehicles.

PepsiCo is using it mainly for chips which have hardly any weight at all and for transporting stuff like that I'm sure its great, but otherwise it's really bad. Volvo released an electric truck that is good at towing because it's not focusing on things like 0-60 times and futuristic tech and rather balancing towing capacity with range. Mercedes also has one but they only sell in the EU.

The Daimler BEV (all-battery) freight truck pack is 550kwh. Judging by claims of longer range, I expect Tesla freight truck packs are larger. This point is important based on how limited battery resources are distributed. I'm an advocate for plug-in hybrid PHEV tech for big rigs. Small battery packs for PHEV passenger cars likewise distributes battery resources more broadly. My rough estimate is - for a single '1' BEV freight truck, as many as "500" household PHEVs is possible. Divide the freight truck BEV pack into 5 PHEV packs and the same battery resource could deliver 5x the number of miles before depletion and expensive replacement. At some point, combustible hydrogen in a PHEV+H drivetrain will corner the market because hydrogen stores at significantly lower pressure in smaller-safer tanks and could deliver more than twice the equivalent MPG possible with fuel cell HFCEV tech. Toyota's Marai fuel cell in that regard is a mistake.

@@theairstig9164 - You need to do a little research on electric vehicles. A Tesla battery catching on fire is a very rare thing. ICE fires happen at a 10x rate compared to Tesla battery fires. The brakes on a EV still get used at every stop light. But most of the wear on the pads are eliminated with regen braking. The brakes last a lot longer and require less maintenance.

It's well-known that Tesla cars have suffered from more extreme shortages of parts and have long waiting periods for service because of a shortage of technicians, not to mention how the lack of competition has contributed to higher repair costs. If these trucks have 4 year 50,000 mile warranties, that's nothing for a semi. Independents will need to be able to work on these things. There's little to know infrastructure. Imagine how much money you'll make as a driver when there's no parts to get you back on the road and a shortage of technicians available to do the work.

I wonder how prone the motors will be to overheating, not only on ascents, but descents as well, considering how much they are relying on regenerative braking, which is essentially running the motor in reverse and still produces quite a lot of heat. @@snaplashthese very rarely will get charged to 95-100%. Those last 10% of charge take the longest. These trucks will be running almost 24hr days. Charge when you load/unload. Leave with about 75-85% state of charge. You have full regen and have enough range to make deliveries

The average trucker does not have a pit crew to help him out. This is a fairy tale, for non-truckers. Peterbilt, International, and all Semi makers, offer comfort that you have not concept of, unless you were to visit a truck stop such as the Iowa 80. Look it up, and look up you tube video's, and see what is offered. It is easy for an owner operator to spend over $250,000 for a made to order rig. Small toilets and showers are also offered. @@WhittaII

What people don't talk about is the the twisting torque diesels apply to the entire length of the frame. The tesla motors rotate the same as the axles and are located between the wheels. It's like having all the acceleration power and breaking at the trailer pin. What a stark difference.

Are you thinking the twisting load against the frame is somehow a waste of power on traditional vehicles? If so that's not a factor. Power is force x rate of motion and the latter (the lost motion) goes to zero instantly once the frame winds up.

I'd kind of like to see him drive a traditional semi with a fully loaded trailer and double clutching as well as slip shifting it. Maybe in a simple 8 or 10 speed.

When I first saw the Semi-Truck I thought it was the most ridiculous thing I had seen but now, as I get used to it, I see that it is actually very attractive given its aerodynamic brief. That is the measure of a great design and forward thinking designer I think that after the initial "shock of the new" we finally reach acceptance. You have no idea what you are talking about. This thing is useless. It is technically not easily feasible and it’s also pointless both economically and ecologically. You see, freight companies don't choose the vehicles for their design or the ridiculous torque... they chose such vehicles that can haul the biggest weight and have a high range. This Tesla can barely haul anything. Talking about the design. Ask just about any trucker... it's a horrible design and a nightmare for any trucker. The driver sits in the middle. This makes overtaking or looking ahead more difficult. But it also makes it impossible to reach out of the window to pass the paperwork or to talk with the guy in the gatehouse when you enter a port or a factory or, say, a tollbooth. The doors are in the back. You enter, hang your coat, and then have to walk a few steps forward to sit behind the wheel. This means that you are wasting cab space for a corridor basically. You can't place a bed there so the driver can rest, because there are doors there. Even getting in and out of the Tesla Semi seems to be a hassle. And if you want to get out from the right side, you need to go over the passenger's seat that interlocks with driver's seat so you can't just walk in front of it like in a standard cab. And sometimes you need to get out to the right - I did it today as had deep snow on my left. Also the rear doors will make it harder to keep the truck's cab clean. I can go on and on and on. The bottom line is that this vehicle is a rich boy's toy, not a practical, working vehicle because its designers have no clue about the realities of transport. You know, the legacy truck brands have some very good reasons for building their trucks the way they do...

I'm an aerodynamics nerd, and this vehicle looks the business to me. It must be such a joy designing vehicles that don't need radiators, grilles, exhaust stacks, but other than simply omitting those, they clearly spent a lot of focus on this design in CFD and in a wind tunnel. Slippery as hell.

Hi Jay, having been a wagon driver for all my life and driven almost every vehicle I say it’s not before time that the vehicle your sitting in is the best thing since sliced bread!!! No more oily parts arriving in your clean overhauls and being clean at the end of your work day! No more 18 speed gear boxes sat in the middle and not on one side or the other!!! Made for the driver with all the comforts of home life!!! As for the turning circle Jay it’s as much as the trailer will allow before it jackknifes!!! I noticed a small problem behind the fifth wheel which will be the only oily part on the vehicle there are two Suzi connections close to the end of the fifth wheel which will get grease all over them!!! Every time you connect or pick up another trailer!!! Not very well thought out!!! After you connect you make sure by trying to Disconnect that’s to make sure the Jaw on the Fifth Wheel is locked on!!! If you pulled away and it wasn’t connected you would rip out all your suzies lines and drop your trailer on its knees!!! Unless you have hydronic legs on the trailer your in for a lot of hurt!!! I also gave HGV Tuition on my Training vehicle!!! It won’t be in my time but eventually all vehicles will be electric or any other none combustible engine!!! You where lucky parking if it had been raining you would have been sunk literarily!!! The lorry driver doesn’t have men to disconnect either!!! All that being part of the HGV LICENCE!!!

Automatic transmission trucks have been around for many years and at this point are probably the majority. They're also responsible for getting a lot of unqualified drivers into the trucking business and I hate them for that.

Modern big rigs are just about all automatic transmissions. They, with computer control, are far more efficient with a diesel power plant. It's battery issues and charging time that has slowed adoption by the trucking industry. They've got the electric motors pretty much solved. Tesla has a winner here. As long as Musk doesn't further lose his business sense by embracing a political party that mocks and hates renewable energy technologies - or alienate more of the customer base that really wants EV's... Oh wait.... 😣

The production Nikola TRE FCEV which has a 500 mile range fully loaded weighs about 26,000 pounds. Batteries are heavy so I suspect the Tesla Semi will be heavier than that so have less load carrying capacity.

As others have said its refreshing to see design that makes sense. Cant wait to see where these go after more iterations. Another thing awesome to note is how they want to innovate the industry. Bring in younger drivers. Make it comfy. Make it usable. My opinion: they need hella chrome--dont leave the polishers behind. They also could utilize that massive cabin headspace for OTR applications.

This is easy, mobile app with your configuration profiles. Auth controlled by fleet management so they can assign you a truck, you can walk out to it and start it with your phone and it will configure the screens to your pref. They probably just haven't done that yet because it is low hanging fruit relative to the other things they need to worry about and don't want to need to support custom screen configuration support calls on top of everything else at this point.
