Great video - but I sometimes wanted to get a taxi to a nearby train station (like Staines, from Terminal 5) or possibly Slough, but obviously I'm not going to take a taxi from a rank after they've been through all this waiting - any suggestions?

Certain places such as slough and Staines have a fairs fare scheme. It’s a fixed fare where the driver gets to come back to the terminal within 75 mins (Staines) 90 minutes (Slough) 👍🏻 Bottom of this article www.taxi-point.co.uk/working-the-flyers If in doubt, speak with a rank Marshall 👍🏻

Never realized how this taxi thing works at airport but it doesn’t make sense to me why there’s an ‘inventory’ of 4+ hours of taxis waiting idle for the next ride. What’s the business model behind this? There must be so much data available that forecasting the actual demand for rides should be easy and should allow for a system with just a minimum of taxis queuing up for the next ride.

Okay, I think I now understand (5 years later) why my taxi driver at Heathrow was so angry with me. It was in the evening and I arrived at Terminal 5 by train and my flight was the next morning, so needed to get to the nearby Premier Inn. The info desk said a taxi was the best option, so I went for one. I could tell the taxi driver was very angry, but I had no idea why... until this video. He was probably waiting hours, just for me to go for a 5-10 minute drive 😞

A local job the driver gets to come back to the terminal. If it’s very late he might come back to the terminal but no more flights means he has to wait until the morning for a job. It’s just the way the system works. I never let it get to me as that’s the game I play 👍🏻

It's the luck of the draw though. Even in private hire, when I used to put out a job, I'd call on the radio for a car to the pickup location and those drivers in that area wanting the job would call back. The one furthest up the queue got the job. It may have been a pound job or an airport run to East Midlands or Manchester. Some drivers loved the airport runs but they could be gone for ages, and in Manc they were out of radio range (no mobiles in late 1980's) yet other drivers preferred making money doing lots of 5 minute £1 jobs. I had a magnetic noticeboard in front of me and a magnet for each driver with their call sign on. That way I could move them around, knowing approx where each car was. They be moved over to the far right when given a job, as would the next one and so on and they'd gradually work their way up to the left so they were next in line for a job. It ran really smoothly. Magnets & scraps of paper 📝 worked a treat.

Basically, a presenter turns up in a city (starting at a convenient point) and hands over $100 dollars and asks for a city tour. Hi Tom. Great video. Couple of questions about Heathrow. 1.) As you say, it's not very lucrative, so why do it? It looks like you're sitting there for four hours and earning no money. 2.) Is the £7.20 fee worth it? I can only imagine what a local fee is, but can't you get that in Central London anyway with no fee? Or are you just waiting for that one big fare into Central London? 3.) What's stopping a cab going straight to a Terminal, skipping the feeder park entirely? What's stopping people doing that? Keep up with the great videos!
@baconoverflow43842 жыл бұрын
What happens if you get a short distance fare? Like someone wanting to go to say Hayes or Feltham? Do you then go back to the end of the queue and wait another 4 hours?!? That would kind of suck? I was in Las Vegas for a conference a few years ago and had to go from one hotel to another just next door with a bunch of equipment that I couldn't carry by walking, so I got a taxi from a looong queue of taxis in front of my hotel. I used to be Hackney driver in a different town, and it was just down to luck, at the end of the week, we all probably earned the same amount. If any driver tried to avoid a short fare, which happened, they'd soon get put in their place by the other drivers . It's simple, why can it not be the same here, the public have a right to just get in and go where they like as long as they're paying. Unless the driver is at the end of their shift and they don't want a long fare.

I understand that the pedestrianisation of various streets is affecting your business, but walkability and the quality of urban space will always be higher priority than protecting the jobs of a few cabbies. I value the residents' right to not have loud pollution machines constantly driving past their houses over your right to keep making money in your chosen line of work.
@TomtheTaxiDriver2 жыл бұрын
Massively, but London is a huge city and lot of priorities need to be considered. If it’s pedestrians then how will that affect the cyclists? If it’s the cyclists then how will that affect the drivers? If it’s the drivers then how will that affect the truckers? It’s a huge balancing act, and some days on Oxford street and I see; truck, taxi, private vehicle, Uber, cyclist, pedestrian, electric scooter in the space of 10 seconds… I think… wow. TfL have one hell of a job on their hands!

@@TomtheTaxiDriver Wow, I didn't know your taxi was electric, that's amazing. And btw I meant no disrespect, I think your work is important. However more space for cyclists and pedestrians is also very important. Cars/buses/lorries already take up more than their fair share of space.
@mixingshed2 жыл бұрын
People driving their "polluting machines" have been keeping to economy of London going for years. Many of them were told to buy these vehicles and now that more profit can be made from newer technologies, the goal posts have been moved again. No one is forced at gun point to live in a city and there are plenty of quiet rural places away from pollution. At the same time, there are many people out there who simply cannot afford to invest this kind of money into electric vehicles and are just trying to survive. It is very easy to penalise these people financially and try to force them to live differently, however, one has to wonder where this will eventually end up...

So after all that waiting, is it really worth your time? I have always faced grumpy taxi drivers when they hear my destination is close to the airport. And I totally get it why, but what else do you suggest I can do better so that everyone wins? No, I won't tell the driver to take a longer route haha

Thing is on shorter journeys the taxi and go straight back to the terminal. I guess we all have different ways of working but I like a couple of small ones as it keeps me in the Heathrow system. All just depends on time of day and when you’re going home. But that’s the nature of the game ultimately.

@@TomtheTaxiDriver lol and then wait a another 4 hours for 15 pounds

@@YousafKhan-uw4lr exactly what the fuck, how is that profitable? You make money when you are moving passengers. Sitting idle doesn't pay

A live map of the car & live fare cost could be cool. Also if you pointed out the interesting places you pass while driving, like saddlers wells thestre or St. Paul’s cathedral etc etc
@TomtheTaxiDriver2 жыл бұрын
Ooh definitely that’s a good idea. Fare cost I won’t share though
@hatchingdraggon80732 жыл бұрын
So you have to queue all that time for a single fare? What happens if they want a 4 mile hotel transfer? On the website it says 4 miles costs £16-£24, surely that isn't worth it for the driver.
@TomtheTaxiDriver2 жыл бұрын
Local hotel transfer usually comes under the local zone. Whereby you get to come back to the terminal rank, rather than the big rank. Effectively a queue jump 👍🏻

This is what I wanted to know. I imagine it's worth it or he wouldn't do it but I don't know how. Not being a taxi driver 🙂

I used to live 2 miles from Heathrow and used to get so much grief from the drivers when I tell them my destination. On two occasions I had arguments with the drivers and one was just full on rude and wanted to fight!.

I don’t get it. Why wait 4 hours for 1 fare, thought the object of the exercise was to make money?🤔🥴
