So many of you have been asking me, "How long does it take to get good at guitar?" Well today, you're going to find out! ;)
N O T E : Keep in mind that if you don't find yourself learning at the pace suggested in this video, it's perfectly okay! You're not failing. Everyone learns how to play guitar at a different pace depending on so many different factors. Don't compare yourself to anyone else, but yourself and your own progress.
This is meant to be a guide to help you look at your timeline and see if there is something you could be doing differently or more of. Maybe more practice? :)

Takes roughly 2 years if I remember right, but I had taken 2 classes in community college by me, music fundamentals and music theory 1, as well as class piano 1. So I learned just the basics of music theory, which made me very skilled at identifying intervals as I hear them, without having to have a guitar even in my hands to find them and map them out. I also learned that mostly there are only a few options anyways between the first chord you play and the second chors, at least only a few that will sound right. And then going forward, each chord can only really go in a couple directions, so the ability to decipher a song on the radio is largely about knowing that its only gonna be a few different things. You dont need to know what key they are playing in, just the distance between one note and the next, or one chord and the next. Most songs only use about 5 chords, like "Wonderwall", or "Behind Blue eyes" which ironically use the exact same 5 chords. Sometimes they strum the chord as one unit, other times they just pick the chors out as single notes, like in "simple man". Simple man is 3 chords, C-major, G-major, and A-minor. "Weight of Sound" by "Stick Figure" uses the same chord progression, it may not be in the key of "C", but a half step down in tune, in the key of "B", doesnt matter though, same distance between notes. Its just more of a reggae song so it has a different feel and strumming pattern. You could play it in the key of "C" and it would work out fine, maybe better if your voice fits that pitch range better. Thats another useful trick with music theory, sing a high pitched song with ease simply by converting the whole chord progression down in pitch by a whole step or 2 whole steps. A whole step is 2 fret spaces on the guitar. Good luck shredders! 😎

I've completed 4 months in my guitar journey now. I progressed pretty fast in first month with my chords and transitions. Month 2 was the most frustrating, it was like i wasn't going anywhere. Then i got my motivation back in third month and could play better some songs i like. In fourt month I realized that I loved the guitar so much. So let the fifth month begin :)

I've been playing for about 4 years now and think the 2 years were the toughest for me. There are so many avenues of techniques and styles to go down it was and still is hard to find my way. Heck last week I took a giant set back and changed the way I hold a pick because I know in the long term it will pay off. I agree there is no end game in guitar playing and there is no master. If you watch all the greats during interviews when they have a guitar in their hands they are constantly noodling around the fretboard while answering questions. This just shows that everyone has to do the work. Both of you - great hair as always.

I get the same question on my channel. In every video I upload the description will always say “I’ve been playing guitar since May 2015.” I put that in because I want people to know that I started playing late in life and can play cover tunes (sometimes even the solo). I hope this encourages people. I still consider myself a noob player though, it’s hard to define and I’d let others decide that. You can’t fake this instrument, it takes lots of practice and learning seems endless.

Its actually not awesome. Its very distracting. He seems like an awesome guy in general, but if hes going to produce videos of himself then he should be aware of his speech pattern. Just like any actor, news anchor, basically anyone who makes their living in front of a camera. They have to practice their speech to learn how to avoid filler words and small idiosyncrasies like this. Sure, it makes him unique, but not in a good way for video.

I use the guitar to wind down from my day and practice various scales and learn new concepts. I have been playing off and on for over 40 years and consider myself a pioneer of the guitar with interests in all genres. To tell someone they are an intermediate guitar player at 6 months is just not possible. Music with the guitar is a lifelong journey of learning theory not just strumming chords.Understanding harmony, rhythm, and timing is a must as well as hearing in your mind what you want the guitar to say. It is a difficult lifetime journey to master the guitar, but the best way is to let the guitar master you. And when you feel what you are doing, you know just piddling around alone picking and a grinning and your music sounds good to you - it all makes sense because all them years of learning has been worth it for it is "Your" music. Enjoy, there is no Master to the guitar, just millions of guitar players.

Advanced is when you can hear a song and play it just by hearing it. You can literally learn any song immediately upon simply wanting to learn it, say you hear a tune on the radio, you dig it, you google the lyrics so you can memorize the words because that's all you need to work on, you figured out the entire chord progression within the first time you heard the song. Most songs are only 5 chords tops. Wonder-wall included.

It is all about how often you meet up with your guitar-teachter. I'm playing the guitar for 7 years and surely i'm good... But it is also about how you understand the guitar and there are things you have the discover yourself. And the moment or the time in that you discover it is very different from people to people so i would say it takes 2 years in minimum. (That was the Moment when i was able to play about every song and l was also able to make my own songs, write them down, etc.)

Look at it like this; I've been playing since August of 1967, the day to STOP learning is the day you start to die. I'm not ready to die yet. If you try and compare yourself with others you are bound for failure, if you mark your own course occationally stepping out of your comfort zone, you're ahead of the game. Further I come from the medical community,we learn like this:see one, do one, teach one. This pattern works beautifully when learning ANY instrument, the process forces you to reexamine every aspect of what you know.

Hello, I just bought a fender amp and I’m wanting to get a nice jazz tone but I don’t know what settings to put it at, do you know what settings I should put the amp on?
@charlesedwards6390
@charlesedwards6390 6 жыл бұрын
Probably a good place to start is have treble, middle, and bass at 12:00 and a little bit of reverb. Gain/Drive probably at 12:00 as well. The more gain the dirtier the less the cleaner. If your amp is a Fender digital modeling amp it should have a twin reverb setting.

I have practicing for a few months now and I can play open chords, a few barre chords, and some picking patterns but I still mess up pretty regularly. I can play about 10 songs and still learning. This video did give me some hope as I seem to be coming along at about the normal time so yay🤗

I know my open chords, barre chords, power chords, major scale, and pentatonic scale. I know a good amount of songs and riffs as well. I've been playing for a little over a year. Now I'm gonna be going to college for music but I'm only going to be taking an ensemble course and individual lessons from a professor. I don't have the greatest gear in the world. I just have an epiphone guitar and a Peavey Backstage 50 amp. But I'm hopeful that this year I can become a lot better of a guitar player.

For anyone struggling with barre chords, here’s a few tips: > try to line up your thumb on the back of the neck, with the index finger on the front so that the pressure is pushing down on the finger that is covering all 6 strings > find a nice slow song with one or barre chords in a chorus (can’t help falling in love with you was mine) and play it a lot > if you’re struggling a LOT, take a break for a few days and play other stuff and then come back to it, you might just get it because of a fresh start > with the B chord barre, try to have your index finger only over 5 strings, with the tip of your finger just pushed against the thickest string, to mute it. This can help with applying pressure to the right area and it makes the root note clearer > after you’ve got the shape, practice KEEPING it, try to go from the F barre to the G barre, etc and build up that thumb muscle that is pressing against the back Hopefully I helped, please leave any other tips if you have any :D

What do you think about going from intermediate to more advanced? I've been playing for around 2 years and feel like I've been at that sameish intermediate level, (open chords, some jazz chords, basic scales) for a while haha

I feel like keeping a practice schedule and a practice journal also helps immensely. It makes a big difference. If I don’t practice one day, I write down why. It helps me to better manage distractions. It’s made me a lot more disciplined with voice and guitar.

I have a very important question. I am a bass player, I’ve been playing for a few years but I have never even considered playing guitar until a couple days ago. Every time I pick up a guitar I play it as if it were a bass and I’m trying to move away from that style. I know my scales very well and how to play in key etc. but the two extra strings threw me off as well as playing chords. What are some tips and advice to transition into playing guitar with a general understanding of music and how it works?
@GuitarGoddess
@GuitarGoddess 6 жыл бұрын
I've tried the bass a tiny bit, but I have a uke which has 4 strings and is much smaller is size. Honestly, it just takes getting used to and figuring out how to adapt yourself to the instrument. It's natural for it to feel weird at first. Remember back to how weird the bass felt when you started. It's the same for starting any instrument, but with time and practice, it will feel more normal. :)

Thank You. This is the answer people are trying to get. How long before they have to stop putting one finger down at a time. This was a good answer. We understand it varies with playing time. So it will take about six months for somebody who puts the average needed time in?

Ava DeFreitas Define "pretty good" cuz I too have been learning from October, I can play a song with barre chords easily but for me being good at guitar is being able to play any song which the other person requests......
@GuitarGoddess
@GuitarGoddess 6 жыл бұрын
See, this is where the problem lies. In the very first part of the video we mentioned "define good." This is about defining what is "good" to YOU, not comparing to anyone else. Comparing yourself to Ava's progress doesn't make sense because you may both have very different guitar goals. Define for yourself what "good" or "pretty good" means depending on your personal goals and track your progress.

Ava, just keep working at it. It will come for you. My definition of good is probably higher than anyone else's here. If you download one of the "free sample lessons" from Berklee On Line, and work through the entire lesson, you will see what I mean. (It took me about 8 hours, and I am no beginner). This is the college for professionals. You can now get a degree in "guitar", instead of a degree in music. (Bachelor's). One course is even taught by Steve Vai. But that is different than just being good for a party with friends, playing solo at weddings and so on. I wish I had listened to a friend at 24 and changed my career goals and became a professional guitarist.

I’m at two months, a little lost. Struggling a bit with that Paul Kelly song To Her Door. Would love to get to a place where I can play that classic rock guitar solo from Queens Crazy Little Thing Called Love. At times I get disheartened though, frustrated. Sometimes I just can’t for the life of me get my fingers to hit the right strings.
