I’ve been playing for 23 years and if there’s one thing I’ve learnt it is that your definition of good advances over time. What you once thought was ‘good’, when you attain that level of playing through practice, you realise there’s a whole new level of good after that, and after that, and so forth. In other words, you never stop learning, you never truly master the instrument, you just get better.

I've wanted to play guitar all my life so I just bought my first guitar for my 24th birthday. I'm learning through the internet. Having a lot of fun thus far, but I'm feeling sort of overwhelmed by all the stuff I need to learn. It seems like everyone else started when they were fresh out of the womb and I'm just this old fart struggling with basic chords haha. But I'll definitely keep watching your vids and trying to learn!

+Ashley Trowel Well hey there mate, we're in the same boat! I've been practicing for about two months now, but nothing too much I don't have a lot of free time right now, and I've turned 24 one month ago. I'm still really struggling with the chords and everything. What is the type of music you're aiming for to learn? I'm also learning through the internet.

1scott921 Alright! Same here, struggling a lot with limited time and getting the fingerings right when I switch chords quickly. I love all kinds of music but I guess I mainly want to be able to play rock and metal. I write my own songs, and I want to be able to put them to music. I know in my lifetime, I will probably never develop the dexterity for technical death metal or anything like that but I at least want to be able to manage some decent rock songs.
@1scott921
@1scott921 8 жыл бұрын
Ashley Trowel I think it would get managable to play death metal style eventually, with enough practice ofc. I would like to play thrash metal some day so I know how you feel. I also have two of my friends that are learning to play guitar now so it's a little easier when you're not alone in that I guess, even tho none of them is into thrash... And I've tried to write down some riffs but they really sucked lol, hat off to you if you can do that kind of stuff man.

Patrick Ley-Greaves ....First I want to congratulate you for starting at 52........ Do not think you are not a natural player....you are.!!!!..... If you were not.... you would not have started to learn it at 52...... There is Music inside you....That is the reason you have started to learn.....Now coming to learning.... yes!!! It is essential to learn learn Chords.....but not at the beginning it self .....That you will learn automatically as time passes....first learn simple things like one string song....& two string songs etc.....you will ENJOY it totally....It will become more enjoyable than being a hard work....your fingers will hurt less..... & you will have a satisfaction of learning a song too..... If possible get the book called "GUITAR PLAYING MADE EASY FOR EVERYONE" ....by....JOSEPH M. ESTELLA.....It is a very old book, Now out of Print....has five volumes..... I assure you....you will love every moment of learning as it starts to teach you everything in an easiest way.... If you can't get the book in stores.... try it in old book shops.... or in your local LIBRARY. First two volumes are enough to get yourself addicted to guitar.....It will take at least six months for you to completely learn those two volumes .....by that time you will start enjoying playing songs & chords too..... at the end of the first volume you will be playing JINGLE BELLS !!!!.....& all the while You will be enjoying the learning process..... Wish you all the Best..... Don't Stop playing.....I am 68 & I am still learning everything .....you are 16 years younger than me .... Hence you can do it.... LET THE MUSIC IN YOU.... COME OUT.... ALL THE BEST(Y)

If you're learning to play your first instrument, count on being impressively good on it, but not ready to tour yet, after you've played it about 1,000 hours. If you practice an hour a day, that's close to three years. If you love the instrument, and if you keep playing until you love to hear how well you play, the hours will pass quickly.

***** its just one of those things you get out what you put in,you want to be a clean player play until it sounds clean,Ive played from 20 yrs old and im 50 now.im pretty good but i could have been a lot better if i started earlier and practice much more. practice things your not as good at,we all want to play that riff we know really well but your not learning anything. start off slow,use a metronome,learn many many many songs.develop a repitoire of riffs,chords. dont "not" play a style of music because you don't like it,every style can overlap into another style and there are tons of cool things to learn in country,folk,classical,pop,metal,jazz etc etc.

I find time when everyone has gone to bed using headphones...use videos like these ones..also lessons from Justinguitar.com...and just jamming along with riffstation online...(great site).. is amazing now that I'll be playing along with these bands..and notice...that guitar sounds quite good in the mix..is that me..or just a guitar in the recording?! Sure enough am starting to be able to play! The advice is wise..you just stick at it...ignore the 'ugly' sounds you make as a beginner..and little by little..day by day..you improve. Have even found barre chords like Bm and F are becoming possible! Thanks so much:)

I’m 50. Started playing around 40. I’m really happy with my progress. I go through a phase where I eat, sleep, drink guitar. Listen to, watch and read everything I can find related to guitar. I’ll do this for two years. I’ll then burn out and not even look at it for six months. I kinda wish I could level it out some, but it is what it is. I just go with it and sure enough I improve. I play both an acoustic and electric. I fucking love playing. So happy I found the guitar 10 years ago.

Learning folk, bluegrass, and blues that young with an acoustic guitar helped me tremendously. Even though I was obsessed with The Who, Rush, Green Day, etc, it helped to no end playing their stuff on acoustic guitar first and learning bluegrass licks to play over them.

I'm mostly self taught, although I had a few lessons with my neighbour who's in his sixtys but can shred like a mofo. He's impressed by how quick I've developed and i can even play some rifts he struggles with. All that aside though what I'm basically saying is if you love what you do and it brings you joy, play until your fingers bleed😉

Watching your videos recently has really changed my views of electric vs acoustic guitar as well as getting me motivated to learn. I started having a hack back in 1986 aged 18 (49 now) while at university but with limited funds found it difficult to progress. Gave away my guitar a few years later. Then 9 years ago picked up a classical acoustic but never got very far. But now with the plethora of online resources just starting to begin again. Back to the starting comment makes me consider an electric like the Gibson style as I played a friends fibre glass back electric acoustic and liked it way back in the 80s. Hmm maybe venture into some guitar shops soon. Thanks for posting these encouraging videos

I'm 14, just got my guitar and i've been playing for a month now. It's been so long since i've felt passionate and excited for something. It's given me a reason to wake up early and start my day. I'm very impatient, and i'm just really excited to get to play the guitar smoothly, like how singers just seem to effortlessly switch through chords, looking cool as heck. Hope i get there some day.

This was really useful. I can relate to many things mentioned in the video. I am a beginner, just four months into learning guitar, and I can already see that understanding the basics is not too hard, but playing well is really hard. My chords never sound good. But I am practicing, hoping that this will change some day. Thanks for the video.

Im 52 tomorrow and got my first guitar about a month and ago, started with Rocksmith 2014. While it's fun and all, I wasn't feeling like I was learning anything with it. After searching for "beginner lessons" on youtube, I found Andy here a week ago and now I can actually play 3 chords, 2 of them really well ahahahaha! I'm taking my time with it - I watch a lesson, then practice it every day for a few days before I move to the next lesson. Andy is patient and a good teacher, and goes really slow which is great for people like me. I wish I had picked this up years ago to be honest, but glad I did now. I just wanna be able to play some good songs kinda decently. My dreams of being a rock legend have long faded but hey, its never too late, right?

I'm nearly 28 now and most of my frnds started around 10 years ago. But nevertheless, i am so much keen on it now. I have got someone whom i love a lot and have a plan to surprise her with a song and guitar tone. Hopefully, i might be blessed with this guitar thing and be her dream-guy. 12-05-2018(Saturday)

I like all of this chat … particularly the part about adjusting to a band situation … that is where I had to struggle with being in sync with the rest of the band, meaning timing, and times when you need to play low to allow others to do lead breaks, and to keep the format of the song with the intro, chorus, verse, parts and cycling through that as per the original song - a BIG issue - and keeping in time with the drummer was another thing to adjust to and then of course, learning the lyrics … at home I would just mumble the main hook line, but our house band leader expects us all to sing, even if just backup and to know the entirety of the song. Jeeeezzz I did not mean to ramble on like this (although Ramble On is one of my favorite get them going songs ! )

I’m 61. Never had time for guitar when I was working. Picked it up as something to do in retirement. I’m loving it. I make it a priority to practice a half hour a day but typically I can’t put it down and practice for well over an hour... Making progress playing simple songs. Some I can play straight away while on others I run into sticking points where it can take weeks to be able to play them. No matter, at my age I’m not looking to join a band. I know there’s a group of old guys that used to jam together at the local senior center. Maybe by the time this covid19 is over I’ll be good enough to join them.

I am 58 without ant experience or formal music training and started self teaching in Oct 2017 using Andy’s channel and a few other random KZbin videos for specific songs. So that took about 5 months of almost daily practice. Now I can play and sing about 4 songs what I would call good enough and about a dozen sort of getting there. The key for me was not getting caught up in perfection and just getting good enough to actually start and finish a song that I like. Now I can play and switch between about 6 chords and I am having a great time. There are simple versions of songs for almost anything I want to play. Good is relative to what you want to do.

Last year on this day i was finally buying my first guitar and i was searching on youtube for some tutorials. That's how i found your channel and i tried out my first chord - D. Oh boy how awful did that sound. I thought it's impossible to be able to play that chord. My ring finger just couldn't go that far. After a while i learned some more chords and i was struggling with C and switching to it. Now i am able to play pretty much anything begginer-friendly even with 1 or 2 barre chords if they're E/Em/Am shaped and i can't believe it. I hope by the next year i am able to play on time. Right now i can't really use a metronome so it still sounds awful but i hope one day i will. The only problem is.. it's so goddamn difficult to use one. And soooo boring. But i keep at it. *Thank you so much for your lessons, Andy. I love your channel. Keep up the good work!*

I'm learning to play through the internet, I haven't got a guitar yet so I'll probably pay for some lessons when I do, but to me it seems like dedication is what's really classed as time. If you don't keep trying and practicing it will take you longer to get where you want to be. :) (just my opinion haha)

I think most people would be wasting money to pay for guitar lessons. If you have the internet at your disposal, it would be best to try to teach yourself via videos and online tabs first and if it doesn't work out well, then perhaps pay for guitar lessons. If, of course, you just want to be a casual player at least.

the best advice here is to play different kinds of music. if you are a rock guitarist try a little classical and vice versa, e.g. it will certainly improve your musicianship and technical skill. learn standard notation too. it will be difficult in the short term but there will be huge long term benefits. listening to a wide range of things too is definitely enjoyable and is obviously great for ear-training!

I find your videos so helpful! I played guitar for 3 years about 10 years ago and I started again just recently. I'd really like to give electric guitar a try though. I've been told a Fender Stratocaster is good if you want to play a bit of everything, is that right? Because my taste in music is pretty varied. Although I listen mostly to rock and alternative (Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, Bush, U2, Radiohead, Black Keys, Silvers Pickups), I also like artists like James Bay, Hozier, Ed Sheeran, Jason Mraz etc. and some more bluesy stuff. (Is bluesy a word?? My english isn't perfect haha!) Also I'd absolutely love if you did a tutorial for any Muse song!

My partner was a Piano teacher and one of her 'best' students began aged 70. She simply had the time, motivation and patience to dedicate to practice and didn't allow herself to become discouraged at start. She inspired the class as an example that it's never too late to learn. I gave up my first attempt at guitar, but subsequently taught myself harmonica and then Irish tinwhistle/flute. What I learned from those experiences is that it took me 6 frustrating months to get through sounding painfully bad to myself and those around me, 18 months to sound OK to myself, three years to sound OK to others, and seven years to feel I'd 'nailed it!" - The important thing is that after the initial 6-18 months of pain, the sense of reward makes it all worth while. There do come plateaus however; these are a good time to focus attention on disciplined exercises or theory perhaps. Sometimes I'd find I'd improve after taking a short deliberate break (never give up!). I found singing regularly in a choir greatly helped me learn to read music, process it in my head and translate it to an instrument as well as give me confidence to sing and play.
