How Long Does It Take To Get Your VA Disability Claim Approved?

If you’ve filed a VA claim for disability benefits, then you may be wondering how long it will take until your claim is approved. As of 2023, the VA is averaging 120-150 days to process all claims and appeals except those that have gone to the Board of Veterans' Appeals (BVA). The length of time it takes to get a decision on your VA disability claim depends on the complexity of your case, any medical evidence that needs to be reviewed, how long it takes to gather all the necessary documents and information needed to evaluate your VA claim.
The VA disability claims process can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on the complexity of your claim and whether or not additional evidence is needed. If you have all the necessary information and documents ready to submit, your application will likely move through the process faster than if it requires more paperwork.
It's important to note that veterans who have never filed a VA compensation claim before may encounter delays due to lack of familiarity with the process. Obtaining and submitting required documentation can sometimes be a time-consuming task that causes delays in the timeline.
The good news is, there are ways to make sure your claim moves through the VA system as quickly as possible. Submitting complete and accurate information on all forms will help speed up the process. You should also double check to verify that you have all of the required documents before submitting your VA disability claim.
When filing a VA claim, it’s important to remember that the process can take some time. If additional evidence is needed or if your claim ends up at the Board of Veterans' Appeals (BVA), then the wait time can be extended significantly and vary from case-to-case.

I retired from the Air Force after 21 years in 2017. I was awarded 90% (87%} at that time, but last year I felt it was time to try and join the Hundo-club. On June 8th of 2022 I completed my internet to file, and then spent an entire year scheduling appointments, and visiting doctors (VA, and civilian). I was gathering every bit of evidence to support my claim. On June 2nd of 2023 I filed my claim. Within a week I was scheduled for two C&P exams in July. On August 23rd I was notified that my claim was approved, and I did in fact join the hundo-club, and to my unexpected surprise, they deemed me total and permanent as well! On August 28th I received my back pay. Thanks Combat Craig! Keep up the good work.

Submitted intention to file in late January 2023 (extremely important for the back pay), went to all the appointments, went to the VSO to file claims in June 2023 with some medical diagnosis, attended all C&P exams as earliest date they had provided for me, kept going to appointments, and in July 2023, it moved to the review stage, still continued going to the appointments, then yesterday, 9/15/2023, I went from 50% to 100% P&T!!!!!! Thank you Jesus, God, combat Craig and all other advises!! Focus on big claims first with medical appointments and buddy letters because your claims may be finished sooner than you think 👍

What were your big claims? Did you submit your buddy statements along with your claims in the same word document?
@pkkim9384
@pkkim9384 11 ай бұрын
@@steverogers7601 my big claims were PTSD, back, and sleep apnea. I had 3 buddy statements just for PTSD, 2 in a memorandum format and one as a regular word format. Only after I submitted all the docs I found out that there was a specific form for it but I guess it worked still. Oh also, I submitted my own personal statement for PTSD on top of the buddy letters as well. And make sure you always tie it back to your service even if you did not goto a mental clinic during your service. Let’s face it, who willingly goes to a mental clinic proudly? We all were told to drink water and move on and they made it seem like it’s a weak people’s thing to be doing therapies. I would highly recommend the diagnosis from the VA hospital for your claims because it is a medical evidences that the reviewer cannot dispute. Hope it helps and good luck!

@@steverogers7601You have to do separate statements because that person or their rep has to sign it. Also, if you want to use a C&P exam that was recently done to weigh as supporting documentation, you HAVE to do a statement saying that. Even if the examiners notes are there, you have to hold their hand about what to use. Maddening. Just had to do this for a hearing and tinnitus C&P exam.

Well, I had been out of the Army 37 years when I first filed, it was for Tinnitus, hearing loss, low back pain, and high blood pressure in early 2016. I was awarded 10% for Tinnitus and 0% for hearing loss in early 2017. I was denied for low back pain and high blood pressure. Later in 2017 I filed for vertigo and depression\anxiety/insomnia secondary to tinnitus. About mid 2018 I was awarded 30% for vertigo and 70% for depression/anxiety/insomnia/adjustment disorder. Now first they had me at 10% for tinnitus, this past February I filed more claims one being an increase in my hearing issues and by April they increased my rating to 30% for bilateral hearing loss ( I’ve read that’s one of the hardest claims to win ) Next I went in to my C&P exam on a Monday for my insomnia and Friday in that same week they already had rated me at 70% .. it took only 4 days . I had a C&P exam for PTSD. I have a diagnosis from the mental health provider at my local VA Clinic. I'm not sure why I needed a CMP exam but I went to the exam. During the exam the medical provider moved in close reach in and hit my hat with his pen. Trying to evoke a response. I'm not sure if that's a legitimate thing to do. He's very fortunate that I didn't respond. Not a smart move on his part.

I've been receiving a War Veteran's Pension for the last fifteenish years or so based on "complete and total" non service connected disability. When I filed this last June, I was asked to provide documentation on Lejeune - so mailed off a request for my records from the National Archives. I've yet to get my records (no sure how long it's supposed to take). Reading around, I've seen a few people with difficulty around "proof" of TDY at Lejeune. I attended the joint war games in 77, but I was stationed at MacDill AfB with JCSE. I'm Army. Is this delay because I was attached to the Joint Chiefs or is this a normal wait time?

It depends on priority order the veteran fall into if you have already been approved if your claim is adding new secondaries. Your priority order depends on what your % is currently. If you have never been rated, you're last on the totem pole unless you're really old or have a life threatening diagnosis that is service connected.

Incorrect. That's only for treatment at VA hospitals where your percentage comes into play. For VA disability claims, they are adjudicated in the order they are received unless you can prove one of the following when you submit your claim: • Experiencing extreme financial hardship • Terminally ill • Diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig's disease • Very Seriously Injured/Ill or Seriously Injured/Ill during military operations • Age 85 or older • Former Prisoner of War • Medal of Honor or Purple Heart Award recipient

Take your highest % disability.. say 50%.. that meants you are 50% abled.. say your next highest is 40%, cut that in half.. you will be 70.. next highest is based off the 30 u have left. If you had a 10% rating it would be 3 points.. 20% 6 points. It gets incrementally harder the higher you go.. to go from 90% to 100% you need to hit 95%.. would need another 50% of rating for those 5 points

I retired last year and the original VA claim was filed within a nexus presumptive period. It should have been a clear cut approval.

I've been making all appointments and have a diagnosis for all three that's related to my PTSD. My claim was filed at the end of September and my first C&P exam is October 30 for the mental health. Then after that an exam for tinnitus November 29. I'm very fortunate to have a great VSO!!! Without this person I wouldn't have had the guidance to get this far so fast. I will say this ,,, WORDS MATTER on how you describe your claim. And youre going to need a diagnosis to back up your claim. If you need an example let me know.
