Took me 6 months of practice few hours a day, with a classical guitar teacher, theory, different techniques etc, to play Carulli waltz in e minor on a rather high level. I love learning and playing the guitar. Best decision i've ever made and i'm 37 years old.

@@aquilino1984 I realize I am a few months late but.. it's both funny and sad how legitimately upset you got from this guy's comment, especially since he was very clearly joking too. He was basically making fun of himself for not taking guitar seriously, and you got all "it's not a competition, why don't you post something so we can laugh, I am so much better than you, waa waa waaah, oh and also it's not a competition, but I am better though, did I mention we ain't competing? but anyway, I am the best, I am playing on a very high level after only 6 months, I demand everyone to be impressed, oh and also - did I mention that you suck?" (this is exactly how you sound.. and with that excessive passive-aggressive use of smilies, my dear god.. did you say you were 37 or 9?). After 6 months, you are not playing anything on a "rather high level", I don't care who you are... don't kid yourself. You might be amazing for someone that's been playing for 6 months, but that's it.

I'm 37 years old and I just started like 3 weeks ago, all my life I wanted to play this particular instrument, but I don't know why, I never believed that I'm special enough like those who know how to play to be able to do it, till my wife got me a guitar on my birthday and here I'm practicing daily and progressing despite the fact that I can't feel my finger tips and all the pain but I'm in to it like day and night, nothing is impossible and I'm in to this till I'll be one of those special humans who plays any kind of instrument specially guitar as it's the best sound maker in my point of view, wish you all the best beginners and just wish me the same :)

I've been playing for about 14 months now, and have just finished learning Classical Gas on my Cordoba C7. It took me about 2 months to learn it completely from sheet music practising most days for 30-40 mins (and cross referencing what I was doing with a few different video tutorials here on KZbin). I'm completely self taught, and can now read music, find my way around the fret board pretty well and play Classical Gas at about 75% of the correct tempo ;) But, if you'd told me I could play this piece 18 months ago I would have laughed at you. I'm hooked, and will hopefully never stop learning (I'm in my early 40s now). Music is quite literally magic, and being able to tap into that for a few minutes or a few hours a day is something really special.

I've found women less than impressed with classical guitar; they are jealous of my nails though lol. I'm coming up on a year of playing guitar and that mark has really made me look back on how far I've come. It can be very easy to feel like you are not progressing at all if you just think week to week or day to day, but easier if you stretch the timeline out. Capricho arabe was the song that made me want to learn classical guitar, and it took me about 6 months before I could confidently play your easy arrangement. I hit a plateau for a few months then started practicing bar chords and the full Capricho arrangement. I'm about 2 months into learning that and I can now play the first half pretty decently! Just don't give up! The joy is in the experience, not just the final destination!

Thanks a lot for all your thoughtful videos, Allen, including this one. Would it be possible for you to associate some well-known pieces with the following levels (without stating how much time it would require to get there): (1) late beginner, (2) early intermediate, (3) intermediate, (4) late intermediate and (5) advanced. For instance, where would you place Capricho Arabe? Many thanks!

I’m sorry, but I don’t feel like you really answered the question. If someone asks me that question, I ask them the question: “what do you want to do with it?”. If you want to do it purely for enjoyment you can pretty much do what you feel like. If you want to do it as a profession, I tell them it will take practicing roughly 4 hours a day for 10-15 years to reach that level of proficiency. The older you get the more you think about how long it will take to accomplish something. You want to know if it’s going to be worthwhile to invest that much time and energy in something; what’s realistic.

It's just like the chaconne practice the piece all of your life just to maybe play it "perfectly" when you're 45 or 50 then practice 5 more years and hope it sounds just as good. The truth is with guitar there is no "prime" if you keep practicing and trying you'll be able to play the same pieces even in a later age.

I've been a guitarist for over 25 years. Skill mastery comes at 1 to 2 years, depending on how hard you push or how casual you play. Once you are past that barrier, you can play any note and technique at any time or speed. To this day, I learn new songs I can play by memory. It's lifelong, and there's always new pieces to learn and enjoy. To all beginners out there, once you're past the hump, it's worth it.

Learning Guitar Hmm...It all depends on your burning desire if your flame Burns very small it will take you forever or never And vice versa if your flame Burns very brightly you will make great strides.. And then there are those who have a deep desire but not the nack or talent for it no matter how hard they try.. I would say the people that truly succeed in playing any type of guitar are the people that are tickled by the tone and driven by that... If your motive is to pick up chicks or look cool you will never succeed or pick up chicks or look cool.. I would say if you're fascinated by a single open string just ringing a note you are truly on your way.. Lastly there are no leaps and bounds in improvement the the advances are so subtle you do not notice You will only have small moments of magic when you say AHA... The good news is if it's truly in your heart you will love every learning minute..
