My goal is to have fun. No, seriously. I started learning Korean out of curiosity. Not with the intent to one day become fluent or pass a certain TOPIK level. It's about that feeling of accomplishment when I nailed the lesson. It's about seeing the surprised face of my teacher when I throw in new words or idioms I picked up elsewhere. It's about meeting and getting to know new people from a different culture. It's about the way. Not the destination. And as long as I am having fun I will continue. No matter how fast...or slow.

Is it a mistake if I set a goal for myself to reach a certain TOPIK level? I feel like that makes it easier to plan out my studies because I have a goal to plan towards.
@GoBillyKorean

Yes, always have some kind of goal when you're studying. It doesn't have to be a big goal, but something that can help you stay motivated is good.
@m00hk00h
@m00hk00h 7 жыл бұрын
Excuse me but *I* would not know if that's a mistake for *you* . I do think, though, that setting the goal of "achieving TOPIK1" might not be a bad idea. Trying to reach that in certain amount of time however, might be. Just follow your curriculum and see how fast you can progress but don't stress it.

I'd recommend using an actual course for learning Korean as your main resource. This can be a textbook, a class, or a private Korean tutor. It depends on which way you'd prefer to learn.

I've been living in korea for 4 months and my Korean is still so shit. I can have like a two sentence conversation with someone and that's it. I know someone that has been living here for 5 years and doesn't know any Korean. Now I'm getting super serious about learning Korean, although living here is easy without knowing Korean. I feel like it could be SO MUCH EASIER knowing the language.

My Chinese grandparents have lived in Canada for 30+ years but cannot speak any English. Maybe simple words, but that's it. What matters is if you're trying or not. Be engaged and talk to people in Korean, not just listening if you can. My mom speaks to me in Chinese every day, but I can't speak it except maybe basic sentences. I can understand, but I can't write or speak it because I never was taught/tried.

I have this mindset; I'd passively learn common native pronunciation and common grammar/sentence order, I am currently in a school (In the Philippines) with a relatively pretty big amount of Koreans, but not like the amount of Koreans in, well in Korea. Though I personally don't think just learning from context from Koreans is too hard when you can do something else and takes too time if you actually wanted to practically use it in a decent time-frame. Therefore in our case I think the only slight advantage you might have is you might encounter a bigger amount of Koreans who are willing to help in English, but either way, it's all in the dedication and motivation to even progress.

I agree with all of these. Being an advanced learner of Chinese (and a second-language speaker of English), I realized that I will never attain the level of a native speaker since the native speakers and I grew up in a different socio-cultural environment. I think, since language is unseparable from culture, I can say that you have already attained a native speaker level proficiency on the target language if you have already obtained all the cultural connotations of all the words and expressions in the target language. (You will be able to understand this more if you study ethnolinguistics). Besides, the notion of "native speaker" is also very blurry, since among native speakers themselves, there exists a huge variation on the way they use the language. For example, the way the educated use the language is different, the way the younger generation speaks the language is different, etc. I think, it will be much beneficial for the learner if he/she just aims to become functional in the target language since this is more measurable. For example, you are able to read a research paper in Korean, understand a news report in Korean, write poems in Korean, write an email in Korean, etc. For me, these are more realistic goals than targeting the "native speaker" level.

My local community college has 4 different classes (25 hrs each) of Korean language. But the textbook is terrible, so I supplement my self tutoring with Billy's "Korean Made Simple" book 1. I HIGHLY recommend this book to all beginner level students. I plan to continue with books 2 and 3. I also "live" on KZbin, subscribing to TTMIK, Minji Teaches Korean, Bob's Online Classes, and of course, GO Billy's channel. I also watch many Korean movies on Nextflix but do not have any local Korean friends to converse with. I literally put about 4 hrs/day into studying but it is important to understand that I am retired and have the time. I have given myself a goal of one year to be "conversationally" fluent.

@@taylorgalloway2579 I finished the 4 classes from Wake Tech CC and Billy's book #1. Got about 1/3 of the way into book #2 and put it aside. Found a local Korean language meet-up group in the Raleigh, NC area and meet many new friends to practice with. UNC-Chapel Hill offers 6 classes of Korean and have been accepted there starting this fall semester. Problem is, all 4 sections of Korean 101 only have 20 seats each and all seats seem to be "reserved" for incoming freshmen. Being a retired school teacher, I was accepted as a Post-baccalaureate, non-degree seeking student. I think my college degree is locking me out of enrolling (since I'm not a freshman). Think I'll crash all 4 classes and sign the wait list to see if a freshman drops. wgeeze and Taylor, how are your study plans going?

For me it's not really about fluency but proficiency. I've been fluent in the most basic Korean conversational topics just one year into studying it. But proficiency is measured by how much you can talk/write about and understand in writing or listening. Becoming proficient is significantly more difficult than being fluent in daily life situations and conversations (although ofc becoming fluent in that way is a big challenge too).

The idea of learning Korean was a very spontaneous one. I had no clue, had never heard the language before or at least didn't recognize it. So it took me at least 2 months just to roughly get into it (starting with Hangul, pronunciation rules, really basic grammar etc.) so now I feel I can get started! Growing up in a country is the only way to master a language I guess. But luckily I am doing this for myself, I have no goals and no pressure, but hopefully a lot of fun!

Billy!!! thanks for this! I just started learning Korean 7 months ago and was starting to feel like I was hitting a wall in my learning. I felt like i was able to retain the information faster and easier in the beginning, but of course, as the content started getting more involved, I've had a hard time getting the info to stick. I'm probably psyching myself out and just need to relax and enjoy myself. I didn't start this, thinking I was going to become fluent or even visit Korea one day, but because I'm intrigued by the culture and (of course) the music 😉. You guys have encouraged me to keep trying, figure out what level I expect to reach, and study at my own pace. Thanks again

Great video! The whole fluency thing seems a bit subjective. I live in the USA, but if I met the gentleman on the left, I wouldn't assume he wasn't raised here. I know plenty of bilingual people who retain an accent, but I wouldn't think they didn't grow up here and in plenty of cases they did grow up here.

And adding to that, different English dialects vary from State to state, and country to country, Singaporean English is way different than Standard California English but you could still somewhat understand what they're saying (I said some and not all.). You could talk to a British Speaker just fine and only have a few terms you wouldn't understand as a U.S Native speaker, though that is the good thing I found as an English Learner (coming from a country where English is the main 2nd language and the main language of Education) is the flexibility, you could say I was from Australian because for some reason, I picked up a rather similar pronunciation style of that with Native Australian Speakers (Just similar, and not exactly the same.), but either way, if I would have went to America, I could fluently talk with anyone whom is a native speaker.

Of course I know the *really* basic like my name is, where is the ..., what is this etc but that's about it. I only learn it at school for 1 - 3.5 hours a week because it's mandatory. Other than that, I don't really care. Plus, my teachers weren't/aren't that good at actually _teaching_ and we learn things that aren't that important. Let's just say if someone were to ask me why Snapchat is so popular, I'll be able to answer in French.

A minimum of those two hours are for serious academic study, but I will often include more over the course of the day. I fill in the remainder of my day with music, and youtbue video's about Korea etc... At this point, it's still all very new, so I am highly motivated. I'm Dutch and i'm learning Korean through English. I started in 2019, while in a burnout, so my studying 'method' has mostly been sporadic bursts of energy in which i would learn +3~6 hours a day, and then weeks, sometimes months, of not studying at all. While my mental health is better now, i am still the type of person to study in bursts of energy, only to completely give up studying for a period of time after, rather than following a schedule daily. I have been studying more often now that i'm feeling better though. So i usually say that i've only really been learning Korean since 2020. And i can say that now, after about a year, i can pretty much hold basic conversations in Korean, understand alot of sentences, can listen pretty well, and know alot of vocabulary. The key for me was to study in a way that suits me, and learning the things that I thought where important/where i was intrested in, first

Im originally from Brasil and It took me about 15 years to sound native speaking English. I did live in the USA for that entire time and I did not speak my native language (Portuguese) for 5 years in attempt to be as close to a native English Speaker as possible. Im currently learning my 5th language (Korean) and I will never sound native, but since I have the facility and the drive to learn languages Ill be speaking Korean in less than 2 years not living in Korea. Some languages are harder to be near native in, to me personally I will never sound Mexican, German or French. But Italian and English I do not struggle with. I think it also comes down to what your native language is, Italian and Portuguese have similar intonation so that made it easy for me to master it. Thanks for the Korean lessons Billy! You have helped me tremendously in my first months learning Korean -5 months now and I can read hangul, can order food in restaurant, introduce myself, understand frases in Korean dramas. Im enjoying learning Korean.

It's hard to "let it flow" until you're actually fluent at it. Everything feels like it's hitting your brain and it can give you headaches when practicing a lot. As you learn the language more, the alphabet will naturally get easier to read and you'll get faster. But it takes a lot of time.

Just learn because it's fun :) Thinking when will I become fluent, makes you feel like u didn't achieved anything at all. For example, I wouldn't use English outside of school, as a hobby, because of thoughts like: oh I only know how to say simple sentences.. Meanwhile, learning it as hobby i became more confident. Even when after like 10 years of using (more or less) English, I can say I'm confident enough to talk to natives, write comments like this one etc. And it doesn't matter how many mistakes I made in this particular comment. Have fun learning, have fun with small steps :) Greetings from Poland.

I can’t help comparing myself to others when I’m trying so hard for so long to get better at something. I tried not compare myself to others learning Japanese but it didn’t work. Trying Korean but with no intention of going to Korea except to visit - which means my goals for speaking Korean are quite modest for now. But back to comparing myself to others. I can’t believe you achieved fluency in Korean after just a year - I’m not sure if I’m fluent in Japanese after seven years.. is this like one year after arriving in Korea after taking several years of Korean at college in the US?

I'm 16 living in New Mexico and most people around me speak Spanish (Which I cannot speak at all) and I know decent French and am learning Korean because why not? I learned French from class in High School for 3 years and now I'm learning Korean on my free time, at home, during summer because I'm not doing anything anyway. But there is basically nobody to practice with in real life here and that really sucks... 🙁 Bu I'm am damn well committed to learning it in anyway I can 👍

I have a question. I'm self studying Korean, at least planning on it. Here are my goals that I would like to achieve after one year of study: 1. Be able to pass a mock exam created by yourself to test what has already been learned. Must also pass various tests and quizzes of different levels. 2. Be able to proficiently read, write, and transcribe Hangul. Must include good pronunciation of letters. 3. Understand basic words and phrases. This includes but is not limited to: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and the number systems. Greetings, goodbyes, and pleasantries are also necessary. 4. Be able to distinguish between different levels of formality and how to use them in every day conversations. 5. Use a simple grammar structure to construct basic sentences, as well as understand said sentences. Would these be reasonable goals? I've been exposed to the Korean language for over two years on a regular basis (k-dramas, k-pop, variety shows, Korean movies, etc.), so I have some basic understanding of the language. I can already read and write hangul pretty well, but I'm by no means good at it. I have some basic vocabulary that I've picked up through Korean media and casually studying the language, but I want to really get serious about it. Does anyone have any advice? I've downloaded a PDF of, from what I've heard, a good textbook for self-studying, and I've found some good supplementary resources (websites, mainly) in case the book glosses over a certain area of the language or if I'm confused. Edit: Obviously, I want to pass the TOPIK level 1 test at some point, but I don't think that passing it would be a reasonable goal to set myself for this year, and when I inevitably were to fail at it, it would really discourage me. I'm just gonna do some mock exams at the end of the year and see where I'm at in my learning and what I need to focus on next year.

@@GoBillyKorean will do thanks. Here's just a "random beginner learner thought": what if the sentences were translated to English with the Korean SOV word order. Might be helpful to get used to saying "I pizza eat" over and over. If there was a paragraph or short story written in English but in Korean word order, I think it would be helpful. Like Goldilocks. Just a random though. Maybe it's been done? Anywho, you rock, Billy!

Does someone have tips how i can still learn korean affectively?? Or does that just means it will take me much longer?

I would say it's still possible to sound like a native in terms of pronunciation if you actively work on it. Of course if you don't work on it and just rely on hearing Korean to sound like a native you probably won't sound like a native (unless you're like 7 years old) but I would say if it's your goal to sound like a native in terms of pronunciation, it is possible. You just have to actively work on it which could take some time.
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 11 ай бұрын
The only people who sound 100% like a native Korean speaker, are native Korean speakers (people who've lived in Korea from a young age, or from a young teenager or earlier). I haven't yet seen anyone who has 100% native pronunciation but who started learning it as a second language. It's not a realistic goal to have, and it can be demotivating when someone doesn't reach that. A more realistic goal is to become fluent in Korean, or to have close to native pronunciation. Fluency is achievable by anyone who puts in enough time and enough practice. While it could be demotivating for a learner to try to become completely native level, it's definitely possible to work toward fluency in Korean :)
@joshuakorea
@joshuakorea 11 ай бұрын
@@GoBillyKorean I am just curious, at what age do you mean by young teenager? Also, do you think it’s possible for me to speak like a native? The thing is is that I actually spoke Korean with my grandparents from age 0-5 but I stopped speaking it once I went to school. Now as a young adult (below the age of 20), I am going to study abroad in Korea to relearn Korean.
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 11 ай бұрын
@@joshuakorea0-5 probably isn't long enough to have it stick around until adulthood, but it's also a decent amount of time for exposure to the language. The sooner you can re-start studying, and the more you can immerse yourself, the better. But how much those 5 years helped will depend on how well you could speak/understand Korean during that time. Some kids don't talk much and are quiet, and others start reading books and talking a ton by then.
@joshuakorea
@joshuakorea 11 ай бұрын
@@GoBillyKorean Ah that is true. To be honest, I don't remember how much I spoke back then so it's hard to say how much of an impact those first 5 years will have on me now. Yeah my goal is to start studying Korean again soon. One day if I feel I get good enough, I'll send in a video clip and you can let me know what you think if you plan on making another one of those videos where you analyze people's Korean.

Judging by someone’s appearance is not always reliable. Some people may look “Korean”, but what people really mean is that some people look “East Asian”. So, for an ethnic Han to speak fluent Korean, people can mistake that person easily as a native, which can be viewed as a complement.

It's really great that you're trying hard to use what you're learning. Keep doing that. I'd focus still on grammar over vocabulary for your speaking. Try to make some more pen pals who you can practice with. You'll want to increase your exposure more, so talking with Koreans on a regular basis will help - even if it's only talking online or through chatting. For vocabulary, even if you did 5 a day, that'd be a few thousand each year and is more than enough.

I'd recommend switching the sources you're using to study with, or at least re-evaluating them. 1 and a half years isn't long enough to learn how to speak Korean fluently, but it's also not an insignificant amount of time. Depending on how you're studying, and what sources you're using, can help decrease the amount of time it takes for you to keep improving.

I say two Korean words everyday (Hello and Goodbye) to my bus driver because he is Korean. I've been learning since January, and have seen some progress but I don't have a schedule to stick to after school. And it's like this because sometimes i'm motivated and sometimes i'm not because most of the people around me don't support me like I need them to, and because I don't have anything specific schedule to stick to. I just started to write in my own Korean diary everyday as well but sometimes that's it... I hope you can help me... Sorry this was so long, I had a lot to talk about.. :)

Honestly it's difficult to learn a foreign language through self-study at that age, but it's not too early to start working toward it. But definitely from around 14~16 you'll be able to learn much more quickly I think. At that age I'd focus more on learning how to read/write, and on basic grammar and phrases, and less on worrying about conversation. Try to do a little studying every day, and then in the near future begin self-studying with grammar books.
