Dr. Mattson was one of the key influencers in changing my health for the better, starting nearly 8 years ago. Have followed his work since 2013. Rarely see him though. So thanks for these interviews.

Honestly he doesn't seem to be in a particularly good cognitive shape. Maybe too little protein? Everyone is so afraid of mTOR and yet Hong Kong has the highest meat consumption (which is the most hated source of protein) and the longest lifespan on this planet at the same time. So many nootropics/supplements effective for cognitive decline and anti-aging are animal meat derived.

@Bill Miller I was talking about autonomous regions (although I suppose Hong Kong is no longer particularly autonomous). Okinawa is no longer the longest lived prefecture of Japan, since 20 years, man. Now it's in the middle.

@Bill Miller Yes, that's true. Social interactions both result in better hormone release and are a good cognitive exercise. Exercise too, no brainer. And they have different posture to most Westerners. We often forget about this part. It's not just weight, it's also height, because within the same species the total number of cells within the body it largely correlated with speed of aging. You don't have particularly high people among the longest lived, they're all short.

@Bill Miller What you're saying is correct, but total organism size also impacts longevity. It's statistically true within species for multiple if not all species. And you know, a bigger gazelle and a smaller gazelle, have generally the same lifestyle and nutrition, so it's independent of those things. I understand the risks behind mTOR, but I think it's overexaggerated for otherwise healthily living organisms. For example, it was found that glutamine (which I value for helping with intestinal permeability issues) inhibits new memory formation and it probably happens through inhibition of mTOR. When leucine (known for it's strong stimulation of mTOR) was added along glutamine, this negative memory inhibition effect disappeared. And when I see different people who follow low-protein diets over long periods of time, their mental faculties seem to suffer. I don't think we should try to maximize mTOR inhibition. It's true it helps for regenerative processes to have it off, but it's not the holy grail. Young people don't particularly care about having their mTOR activated and still have optimal enough regenerative processes. So other causes are the crucial issue. It should be possible, with other rootcause processes working optimally, to be in a state of mTOR inhibition for enough time to have enough regenerative processes done and be in a state of mTOR stimulation for the remainder of this time, with time for proper anabolic actions such as bone density, functional muscle mass, neurotrophic factors.

@Peace Guard @Bill Miller Hi thanks for your comments and great conversation. Just one thing to add when thinking about mTOR. When I talked to Prof Keith Baar, he pointed out that mTOR acts differently in different tissues and you may want to have it on in say, muscle tissue, but off in the liver. You can do this through the right kind of nutrition and exercise, where as supplements like rapamycin lower mTOR across the body.
