We're up near St. Augustine. We planted some bananas not expecting much but last Sept we got a 10 rowed bunch with 30 bananas on each row! They weren't as cosmetic as store purchased ones but they were delicious. We got about 12 additional sprouting plants and one already has a new flower. I'm kinda stunned buy very pleased.

That is amazing Steve! My bananas never look store bought, either. But just like you, they taste great! It is all about what is on the inside. Sounds like you will be having bunches and bunches of bananas! 🍌 😄 Very excited for you!

Obviously I should stop trying to get bananas from my banana plants because if its so easy and after 3 years of trying to get these banana plants i have to bloom and I still haven't been able to im bout ready to give up. Every year they grow about 14 feet tall beautiful and green. They get full sun added miracle grow soil and fertilized with high nitrogen and potassium and I still haven't had one flower in the 3 years I've been trying. What could I be doing wrong? I live North Central Florida in Ocala and It gets really hot here so I know the soil is warm enough but just missing something just can't figure it out. Help me please lol I was really hoping one atleast would bloom soon because its starting to cool off here where I live and I think its probably too late again this year

I started with 2 pups in oct last year. 2 months later, I got 11 i dug out of a grove on a property getting demolished. Gave some away, planted some at work and brought 5 more home. Theyre all at different growing stages but since the weather has been better here in central FL theyre growing very well. I never thought id be excited about growing something but now im growing everything. Put in 3 raised beds for tomatoes, broccoli, radish, beets, potatoes, peanut plants, watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, peppers. Growing 5 peach trees from seeds, 5 lemon trees, mango tree, bought a fig tree that is doing great. 2 pineapple tops that are doing very well. I love living in fl

You know your thing... I got lots of bananas - several different types and they all come to fruit at different times, depending on type just as you said. Banana water issue is minimal if you keep the roots trashed because they store water. I used to raise a huge herd of baor goats so I still have all that thing to throw at the roots. This is what you have to try if you really wana see bananas!!! In Jamaica, once they start to bear they simply never stop. Forever. By the time a banana matures the sucker is turning out another. The chain continues. I feed the root well instead of taking out too many of the suckers and it works. More water concentrated at the root. I will soon cover an acre so there are quite a few plants in there. Plantains are my favorite but it's not easy maintenance like bananas.

Have you had any luck as yet. I’m in Sarasota as well and bought two good sized plants 2 and a half years ago that I keep potted in a large pot. Even though I prune away the suckers, this plants have not grown in height even one inch. Full sun, water but no growth except side shoots. I’ve potted some of the suckers with same result. I am so desperate to know what I’m doing wrong. I will try the organic matter she suggests.

Great information, thank you! Your video was greatly composed. I just got a banana but i dont know the variety. The mother plant was about 10 feet tall. Had purple/red marks on the juvenile leaves just like dwarf cavendish, lady finger, pisang raja, or musa goldfinger. Im based in Australia if that helps. If i managed to get a ripe banana would that help identify it and could you help narrow down the species?

HELLO! First, let me say that I am so glad I found you and your KZbin channel. I love your videos and have learned so much! I have watched all of your banana videos specifically, and I need help! A little background: we moved into this house and the backyard was a mess (the owner had died and no one kept it up). I wanted to get into growing food and my husband and I started mowing the grass, cutting back vines and branches of things and I uncovered the banana "tree" under all of this! After watching your videos, I started doing what you said by watering, mulching, etc....The banana tree started to grow! It was healthy looking and even produced 2 pups but never got any taller than 1-1 1/2 feet off the ground?! I have fertilized, continued to water, and planted all 3 "trees" in a circle formation, but the 3 of them are the same size and do not grow taller! They seemingly "died" when we had a freeze (I am in Flagler County, Northeast Florida-zone 9a/b) but they perked up again shortly afterward. Why are these darned things not growing any taller???? Signed, Frustrated in Flagler (LOL)

The vertical leaves is because u have too many leaves. U have perfect weather for banana plants so the leaves never die. Here in California the extremely low humidity and high heat kills most of our leaves. It usually puts out 4-5 leaves before the old one started dying.

I'm stumped. You will definitely have the heat... but for the winter you will need to do things to protect the banana. They are tropical and don't like to get cold. I would check out David the Good's channel. He is in Alabama now and has planted some bananas. My advice would be a guess.... and he will have some more practical experience.

Here in SF Bay Area Zone 9B, my bananas (Mysore, Rajapuri) fruit almost on alt years. Just as the plant is ready to flower, winter sets in and the top dies off. Those plants that 'wake up' early in spring may produce fruit by end of fall, but that is, unfortunately, not the norm. Now I have planted other varieties -- hope they fruit by end of fall.

That is a good question. You can look at your leaves, flower, plant size, and the bunch of bananas. Plus use the flavor profile. For leaves are they mostly green or do they have red patches. Are the trees big or small? The bananas - what do they taste like? Just like the store bought - it may be a cavendish. Hope that helps you get started! 😄

I read once that you should prune the old leaves and always keep just 5-6 leaves on the plant. Is this true?

I would personally recommend cutting back any leaves that look unhealthy and any leaves that are thriving and are good color leave them

I've heard that too. I've pruned mine and left them. I didn't notice any real difference for banana production that was substantial enough for the effort. I only prune back leaves just due to crowding or they are in my way.

Banana seeds no longer exist. If someone tries to sell you some it's a scam.

Call me crazy but I don’t feed my banana plant other than just water. I just use regular lawn mulch from Home Depot.
