As of today, it's been almost 900 days since mrekk became the rank 1 osu player. Little did anyone know at the time, but we were witnessing the beginning of the greatest peak reached by any player in osu history. Some would even argue that because he got so far ahead of everyone, the competition is completely displaced and that "there is no competition for rank 1" anymore. Ironically enough, with players like lifeline and Akolibed setting high valued pp plays, the gap between mrekk and 2nd place on the osu rankings has been narrowed to the smallest gap it has ever been in more than 2 years. There are even some talks of when someone will overtake mrekk for the top spot on the osu rankings, but when exactly will that happen? What does overtaking mrekk on the osu rankings entail, and is it even possible in the near future?

I don't really understand why people want Mrekk be overtaken because personally I want the opposite. We have never had a dominant player get to number 1 before Mrekk and then consistently keep pushing themselves to hold it for as long as they possibly can. Previous #1 players have either taken extended breaks or just stopped playing high PP reward maps. To me it's much more interesting to finally see a #1 player who isn't just giving up on the game and is still trying. If anything I think it would be even more interesting if Mrekk genuinely farmed as much as he possibly could.

The thing is, look at lifeline and Akolibed right now. They farm out of their mind. If they come close to or overtake mrekk, they cant take too long of a rest otherwise they will be overtaken quickly

It's not his mindset that is his most important tool. It is 100% his motivation. I would argue that his mindset is sometimes kinda shaky, but his motivation to stay at the top and grind like crazy is simply unmatched.

It really depends on his mindset. I think recently mrekk started to significantly doubt his speed especially with rapid trigger, and combined with speed players like akoli/sytho/zoomer/and even lifeline having massive improvement and setting crazy scores he is to some extent losing his confidence of being the best. I think that overall he is easily the best player still and I hope that he has more fun when he comes back to the game. If he were to just full quit now I would guess someone passes him within 6-12 months. However, I know he said that if someone got close he would contest them for rank 1 which would be very exciting to watch.

Mrekk can only be compared to Jakads at this point ( Mania player ). He was rank 1 for 5 years and after Dressurf took the rank 1 spot, it was History for all of osu. Now Jakads quit Mania and isnt even top 10 anymore, it looked impossible that he would overtaken, but almost 20 players did it now. Mrekk is currently taking a break, but that doesnt mean that lifeline,Akolibed or anyone else will overtake him in that time. He is human and has his limits. His End might be sooner than we think ( that is just a speculation)

I'd say in osu you can be #1 in a bunch of different categories, of course pp is the most popular one and so it's not completely false to say that mrekk is the best osu player. But there are numerous other players out there who set scores that mrekk would not be able to set for sure.

Shigetora will likely never be number one again. He's past his prime and has no chance of surpassing newgen top players. Unless there's a new rework in a couple years that significantly nerfs speed and buffs aim, then he might have a slight chance of making a major comeback.
