There is someone attempting this right now. You should search (including KZbin) for Karl Bushby. He's been attempting the longest walk possible to bring him back to his home town of Hull (UK). He started at the tip of South America (just like the walk shown in the video), and figured out how to cross the Bering Strait to go from America to Russia. It's an amazing story, and he published a book, Giant Steps, about it up to the point of getting to Russia. And that's were he hit problems. He's still doing the walk, after finally getting permission to stay long enough in Russia (especially Siberia) to complete that section.

What about two people riding an animal like a camel or something like that, and they regularly switch places, so that the person behind can sleep and the person infront rides the camel, and after a while they reverse the roles. thats not walking anymore, but I still find this fascinating. This could have been done in the past aswell without technology (except depending of the time, people didnt know much about other continents).

Taking into account inevitable injuries ( you are going to get hurt %100 ) sickness and needing to sleep more after more difficult treks I’d say it would take anyone a very long time. 13 years sounds pretty acceptable to me. They probably stopped for months at a time just for their own sanity.

People seeking goals can get fixated on outlandish objectives. Spending 11 years for Jean from Montreal and 13 years for the Romanian sure took up a lot of Forrest Gump mindless moments. Others spend 11 years getting a PhD or building a business, working in a factory, raising a family and so. Everyone has 1000 minutes everyday to run, walk, sit and think of what to do with the 1,000,000 hour in their life. Me, i climbed Mt. Everest, wrote 12 books, traveled to 102 countries, invented the Knowledge Generator and so on
