I think Luka's poor defensive plays are being singled out to a degree that most players don't get. However I'm not mad at it... I don't think Luka's as bad defensively as is being portrayed, but I think this narrative will only make him work to get better on defense, which is good and necessary.

I have watched all games of this series and I don't think I'm overreacting about his defense. It's been bad, he knows it, Jason Kidd knows it. One part of it is that he is basically a one-man show in offense playing 40 min per game and coming after an injury. A player this important has to find rest moments sometimes on defense and it happens that Phoenix are not allowing him to do so, targeting him on purpose. Other part is that he has never been between the most laterally quick players in the NBA.

His defense improved in regular season it’s still average at very best but when you’re usage is that high on the offense your defense is going to take a massive hit. His body type makes it pretty tough to be an elite 2 way player but if he keeps getting exposed he’s a competitor that really wants to win and doesn’t have the same problems with partying as James harden I don’t see why we won’t see him show up to preseason in the next few years cut up. For now he can rely on pure unbelievable skill and get away with it. He’s learning but ppl forget he’s still a kid.

If I’m Jason Kidd I’m stealing another playbook out of the Pels playbook and having 2 people pick up CP3 and whoever is inbounding. Make them work for every single possession. Also takes them a little longer to get into their sets without CP3 or Book having the ball. Play deny defense on book and try to contain CP3, if CP3 goes for 20 good force him to beat you. CP is a great playermaker way better then Book you don’t want book hitting shots and CP3 getting ez points that can convert to ez assist. Also book is a good passer but not at the level that CP is, Booker will beat you by scoring, while CP can beat you in multiple ways so make him work the whole night. Exhaust him he’s not in peak shape anymore.

The problem with Luka on defense is his mindset. He is so offensive minded that he focuses on positioning for rebounds to initiate the offense and that often times results in open looks. He needs to work on that and he actually did really good in the month of january and febuary.

Wrong. Mavs have no size and rim protection from bigs so he has to bump down to get rebounds and help on the rolls. You live with the occastional corner 3 because of it. His main problem is that there are games like g2 when he is totaly unengaged on defense and that he still isnt in the shape to guard elite small guards 1v1 to any extend. Mavs cant really rebound without Luka crashing the boards, just look at the first 3 Jazz games where they were down like 20 rebunds every game (despite the wins).

The Mavs hadn't won a game vs the Suns since 2019. Away or Home. After the first 2 losses they were 0 and 11 vs Phoenix in their last 11 games. Then they won 3 games. I don't care what this guy has to say. The big difference between the first 2 games and the rest of the games (even the Game 5 that the Suns won) is that the Suns stopped running the Spain pick and roll on offense. They need to get back to that. On defense, the Suns have to figure out how to prevent Bridges from completely getting wiped out from the action on the first pick when he is initially on Doncic. You might as well start off with Paul or Ayton guarding Luka if you keep letting the screener wipe out Bridges with no recovery back to Luka. If the Suns fix these two areas it will be a Suns/Warriors Western Conference Finals!

Idk what you are talking about most of the vid. Outside of G2 where he was terrible, Lukas defense has been totaly fine. As it has been all season long outside of few outlier games. He is above avrage at nearly every defensive metric, even elite for heavy usage guards. Finding a few clips where he gets beat on defense really dosent mean much. Yes in G2 he was legit terrible, his stance was totaly off and he looked dissinterested, but besides that he has been at least fine even in this series. You could pick out clips of booker or CP3 getting abused on defense and say they have been equaly terrible on that side but that is just not true. When you have a missmatch, you have to protect it as a team. CP3 cant guard Luka 1on1, and the same goes the other way around, there is no shame in that.

"totally fine" is an overstatement but agreed, the taunting and the smiles and the "Luka Special" made all the eyeballs of critique to get attracted to Luka, but then again it's good experience, he'll grow from it and will be even better next year if/when the Mavs get a proper rim protector (hopefully)
