The one great thing about your work is that , it is not over the top difficult to get great results. Luminar really has taken photo editing to the masses, the learning curve is nowhere near as difficult as Photoshop or light room. There is little to no frustration level with using the program. If there is any frustration it is in wanting to print and mount all the great photos and looking at the price tag to do so. It really forces a person to go back and look at all the stuff that was considered garbage in the hundreds of pics and see what can be done to change crap to a treasure.

Excellent work, Jim. Something about the photo bothered me too, so at 13:30 I got excited, thinking you were about to say the same thing I was thinking. But no. First, I agree the horizontal flip helps. But I was bothered throughout the video by the tree being so close to the edge of the frame. For a moment, I thought you were going to fix that in Luminar although I didn't know how that could be done. This can be done easily in Photoshop, which is where I'd have started before working the photo in Luminar. I'd have simply stretched the canvas using the crop tool then used Content Aware Fill to populate the new real estate and voila! Ready for your skilled hands.
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын
thanks much and yeah I would like to stretch the canvas too but Luminar does not allow that, and I agree it would be helpful - so I did everything else I could do here 😁

Wow, some transition of this photo! And lots of good tips here, thanks. Love the Crop Tool flip (So that's what those little icons do.) Say, a couple of thoughts here: • Protect your ankles by taking your eye from the viewfinder before walking with your camera. • Caution when Crop-flipping an old barn that has a Dr Pepper sign on it - so many old Texas barns do. • Get well fast, it will cool down soon and we can get out for more photos when Texas gets under a 100° again.

@colinmelhuish12544 жыл бұрын
HiJim , great walk through , brilliant result. One question. On The Structure AI you took the slider to the right which I believe gives global adjustment then went to the brush to form a mask in the lower portion of the image as you didn't want the sky affected. Is the sky not already affected from the initial slider movement. My way of thinking is brush mask the area you want affected then move the slider. Be good for a comment. Thanks.
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Colin and yes if you move the slider first it will affect the entire scene, but once you mask it then it just impacts the masked area. Or you can mask first and then move the slider, which means only the masked area is impacted. Did I answer your question? thanks!

Kind of a bummer that skylum gives more attention to features for the mac users over windows. On windows you don't have black and white clipping point display, in erase tool you don't have straight line feature as well as lasso erase, and in color tab of essentials we don't have hue shift to go with the HSL, just to name a few missing features.
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I hope that the PC version advances some more so you can take advantage of these other useful features.

@stevenrutsch50264 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, excellent video, as always. You know I love your work, however, it seems to me that there is no way you could get the sharp shadow under the barn eave with that sky. As I see it, the sun and brightest sky is behind the barn. I have had this issue looking at sky packs, it always seems that if it is a sunset/sunrise, the sun is usually in the photo or just off frame. I have not seen a sunset pack including images with the sun at your back, just showing clouds. Have you? Obviously I have not seen every sky pack out there, but it seems to be a trend. Anyway I've decided I need to keep looking or try and shoot my own. And speaking of sky replacement, do you know why we can't free transform the sky like you can when combining multiple images. I find the adjustment options in sky replacement to be limited and a bit hard to locate just the way I want. If you can free transform with an added image, isn't the sky replacement the same thing? Perhaps not. A good idea for a future upgrade, I think. Thanks again, keep your foot elevated!
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын
thanks much Steven and yes I get your point on the shadow under the eave - oh well, it's art so I made it any way 😁- and yes free transform on a sky would be ideal but no idea if that is coming, tho I agree it would be most useful!
@phlotographer4 жыл бұрын
With a replaced sky, what happens if you now wanted to create a Look? also, unfortunately maybe, I have to disagree with others related to the flipped crop. Because the eye goes to the lightest and brightest and because most of us read from Left to Right, generally one likes to draw the eyes in that fashion and leave the eye contained within the image whereas with the bright area on the R the eye is led out of the image but with the original crop, the tree contains the eyes within the image. I too though liked the LUT and strangely enough when you came to the original image I thought of using some desaturation and an appropriate LUT to create an old time film photo of that particular image.
@JimNix4 жыл бұрын
I *think* you can add a sky to a Look but I am not in Luminar right now, but seems like it would work (a texture works, for example). It's ok if you don't like the flipped version, to each his own and no worries. I like how the flipped version goes from dark to light as you go left to right. But obviously everything about this is personal preference - part of the fun of Luminar! Thanks for watching!

I don’t know Jim. I look at the photo and it has shades of red/orange as well as shades of blue and gray. I think retaining the green of the tree and the background would have made the picture pop a lot more. You always mention how you like lots of color in your photos but here, the color has been reduced. I get it that you are creating “art” and that art may sell. I guess for my purpose I look to enhance photos shoot to make the look real and not over-processed. There are some excellent tips in here but, I’m sorry, it appears over processed to my eyes at least.
