Like most of us, I would love to fill my garage with the latest bikes but, sadly, my hard earned cash has already been ear-marked for boring things like the mortgage, the bills and paying Mrs May’s salary.

Bicycles do not last forever. Consequently, one point I would like to emphasize is that while you can ride only one bike at a time, if you have two bikes (or more) *each bike can be expected to last twice as long* (as it is in use half the time or less). You are therefore free to employ one bike for say, primarily for both transporting groceries with its fine panniers and longer road trips, while the other bicycle could be the one you use to commute to and from your job. Moreover, not all bicycles can accommodate studded tires. Thus, one might have a third bicycle which does, to be used mainly in winter.

That’s a cool way of looking at it. It’s also good to have a different bike for different types of riding but I’ll be happy with a garage full of road bikes!

I have 3 bikes: the first one is my electric bike, I use it to go to work and do the shopping. Second one is my motherbike. It has a childseat at the front and at the back, its heavy. My favorite is my vacationbike: it carries all my campinggear to every place I wanna set camp. I feel very lucky to live in a country that has a cycleculture: the Netherlands!

I think this depends on if you're into biking, bikes, or both. If you just like biking, then maybe 3... a road /racing bike, mountain bike and a city/ commuting bike. If you love bikes.... N + 1. I have 28 bikes now ( I think) and 30 frames plus draws full of components. I commute by bike every day because its a great way to start work. I go for rides in the weekend because it makes me feel I have done something good for myself on my days off and I restore old bikes because its better than watching TV and increases my knowledge

My first road bike, a Nishiki tri-A, that I bought in 85, a Bauer I bought for an ex, and 2 others for my boys. Then someone offered me a Trek discovery cheap, and the addiction began. I will get some photos sorted and make my Facebook public so you can see.

At least 3 bikes is what I have always liked.A fun bike, a fit bike, and a fantastic bike. I feel very fortunate to have more than one bike these days. As I remember only being able to afford one about 30 years ago. And when I crashed on it,and the frame snapped,I had to catch the bus to work,as my boss at the time wouldn't sub me my wages to buy a new one. I was so desperate I actually considered stealing one from a bike shop. I didn't though. I remember the day I could finally buy myself a new one. It was possibly the best day of my life.( sad I know,and no offence to her in doors) but it was,and still is the longest I have ever gone without one. It took me about 10 weeks or so,to save the £350 pounds it was for my lovely new Reynolds 531 Nigel Dean racing frame. It's nice to share my bike memories with like minded people.

I have three. One is my commuter bike which is a Specialized mountain bike. I've added fenders to it for when it rains. I used to ride a bike with skinnier tires, but I kept bending the rims and getting flats. The road to work has a lot of pot holes. I now use that bike, a Specialized alloy hybrid, for longer rides. In my case, we only go about 40 miles, but it's challenging for me. I also built an e-bike. I bought an old Schwinn from a pawn shop and converted it with a kit. That's just for fun. In general, it's a fun hobby.

2 , ones a hybrid that I use for commuting , shopping, camping just about everything. Other one is a fully restored (by me)1966 Carlton racer which I use on the road and it always puts a smile on my face just like it did when I was 13. Keep biking!

Well, considering that this is a British film, its focus is toward road bikes. Considering all the different types of bikes, any one of which would qualify one as a cyclist, having a bicycle collection could mean quite a few categories. I segregate these as: Antique, Art, Beach Cruiser or Classic, BMX, Cargo or Utility, Comfort, Electric, Fixie, Folder, Kids, Mountain or Enduro, Race or Criterium or Track, Recumbent, Road or Sport, Stingray or Chopper or Custom, Tall, Touring, Trailers etc., Trials, and Trikes. I have collected 12 from these categories, with multiple examples of my favorites (4 touring bikes!) for a total of around 23. Yes, my wife says I must divest. Soon, dear. Soon.

I have 3. Litespeed Ultimate, Titus Modena, and my beater Raleigh Technium MTB. My Titus and Litespeed are my trophy bikes. My beater is used whenever I see bad weather and need to ride, or just to cruise around, or if I'm riding in a sketchy part of town. Funny when guys drop me on my beater, I think, "I wish I had my Litespeed." When I was young, I lusted after a Litespeed, Merlin, or Colnago. Now that I'm an old guy in my 50's, I took the plunge. My dad would roll over in his grave if he knew that I had 3 bikes. He would always say, "You can only ride one at a time." and things like, "..it supposed to be cheap transportation.

Nice collection. I agree that some bikes are indeed used as cheap transportation but most cyclists ride their bikes for fun. As the phrase says: It’s not the destination, it’s the journey. If that’s the case, you might as well travel in style.

Don't know why I missed this video from 2018 but I really enjoyed it. When I retired in 2016, I purchased a Surly Disc Trucker. I have replaced every single component so the only original parts of the bike are the frame and fork. While it is spec'd out as a full on road bike complete with a dual power meter, Varia radar, etc., I really enjoy the longer wheel base and the ability to run wider tires for comfort. I average one crash per year so I'm glad I ride a steel frame bike. It has held up well including a collision with a car.

I have 3 bicycles (well, 4 if you include an old road bike that I converted to a city bike a few years ago). My primary ride is my road bicycle, which is a Trek Domane 6.9 with Dura Ace Di2 and disc brakes. This is by far the most comfortable and capable bicycle I have ever ridden. I can push it harder and more agressively than any other bicycle I have owned or ridden. And it will take it and beg for more. Love that bicycle. My second bicycle is my mountain bicycle, which is a Pivot Mach 429. It's a 2014 model, but even at 7 years old it's a kicka** ride that I can take just about anywhere, save very technical downhill rides. My third bicycle is a cyclocross bike that I have converted into a gravel bicycle. Here in Southern California, where I live, gravel riding is the fastest growing category of riding. It's a HELL of a lot fun and it's the type of riding I enjoy the most. My converted gravel bicycle is a Ridley X-Night 20 with Ultegra Di2 and disc brakes. The wheels that came on it were UCI cyclocross racing wheels, which while nice and light, are very impractical for gravel riding. So I bought some Spinergy gravel wheels and run 36mm Schwalbe tubeless gravel tires on it. Having three bicycles may seem a bit excessive, but I like the variety that allows me to ride what fancies my mood the most at the time. If you can pull it off, I would highly recommend getting all three types because you will never, ever, get bored of riding.

2 bikes Bianchi 2004 Reparto Corse Alluminum with record and Chorus components Levetation wheels. Still suits me fine. Got a Falcon Harrier late 80's use in Late Canadian Winter. That is it. Also use the Falcon earl Spring until roads get repaired. Snow plows beat up the roads pretty good.

In my experience I found that all of my bikes have the same cassette gear ratios e.g. 11-28 and the crank is 172.5mm in length plus the chain rings are 50-34 also known as a "compact crank". This allows me to select any bike and I know I won't ever have to think about with gear I should be in.

I suppose I'd better leave a comment too. To help the algorithm. I just have one bike. A Merida hybrid. I hadn't been on a bike for almost 30 years until I got this almost 6 years ago. It was initially only used occasionally because I personally just found it a little pointless going for a ride just to go for a ride. Yeah I know, dif'rent folks for dif'rent strokes. But very soon I got a rear rack and a pair of large panniers from Lidl for €9 each and suddenly I could carry stuff and do things and leave the car at home. I've now got enough various bags and racks and accessories for every use for at least 3 bikes but last year I got a large trailer and another one this year and I can and do pull anything from 70kg of weekly family shopping to a full sized lawnmower to almost anything you can think of within reason. The more I can load on, the bigger kick I get out of it. I only take the car when I can't help it now. I might go 5 or 10 kilometres for a specific reason and take another 30 or 40 kilometres on the long way home. Just because. I describe my cycling as primarily utilitarian and commuting but there's lots of additional exercise involved and it's a mini tourer and loads of fun. There are much better bikes out there I realise but it's been a great all round workhorse for me. It's a lot heavier and slower than a road bike but hey, that just means I don't have to go as far to get the same exercise! I will be getting another bike next year. It's going to be an all round electric workhorse this time to do more, carry more, pull more and go further. Because I'm a reasonably lofty 2 metres tall and 120kg, I'm going to need at least a 60cm frame or bigger so initial enquiries seem to be revealing little or nothing in ready made e-bikes in what I'm looking for in those sizes. I also want something with repairable, replaceable and upgradeable motor, batteries and parts. Too many e-bikes seem to be sold to use it until something goes wrong and then throw it away. Too many unique proprietary parts and built in batteries. Disastrous. So it looks like it will be a case of buying a good strong all round hybrid or tourer and getting a quality conversion done. To quote the Pointer Sisters, I'm so excited!

Excellent channel and love your bikes. I bought a Bianchi C-Sport 1 last month for $700 to commute on. The bike shop owner said it’s a flat bar road bike (from what I see online it’s labeled as a hybrid, commuter or fitness bike). I’ve thought about racks and panniers for this bike instead of wearing a backpack.

I have a custom made steel mtn bike with a custom steel fork and 650 B (27.5" ) wheels (it is a full rigid mtb). In 2018 I upgraded the drivetrain to XTR 1×11. In 2017 I rode this bike on the famous Downieville Downhill (California), then without changing anything, a couple of weeks later I rode it across Iowa in the 2017 RAGBRAI. It is not super fast on pavement, but fast enough. It is nice riding a bike (for hours) that fits and doesn't cause any pain. So one bike can work.

Yeah I have three road bikes. A 2018 Trek Emonda ALR 5 with carbon wheels as my racer, a 2019 Trek Domane AL3 as my everyday machine, and a Giordano Libero (Amazon bike) as my backup. Never a down day with my setup.

I have 3 bikes - all beach cruisers. A 1964 Schwinn Typhoon that I saved from a scrap yard. I was actually helping a friend look for parts to restore his antique truck, when I found it. Rides great. Other than missing the left hand grip on the handle bars, it was all there. Don't know why it was thrown out, with so many Schwinn collectors out there. My next bike is a 2017 Huffy Panama Jack beach cruiser. I got it from my neighbor, who - sadly - went through a bitter break up with her girlfriend. After which, she gave me her bike. My last bike is a 1963 Huffy F-85 that I bought at auction for $30. I'm doing some work on it, to try to make it nice and shiny again.

I've got 3 bikes : - my main bike, a 2018 fuji jari 1.3, alloy frame, carbon fork, 2x11 105 with 46/30 up front, trp hy/rd brakes. I've got two dt swiss sets purchased since the stock rear hub failed after 10k km, a p1800 that I usually fit with 28mm road tires and an 11/30 cassette (to ride with my roadie friends) and a gr1600 that is currently fitted tubeless with 40mm hutchinson overides and an 11/34. I'm going to put a son hub on the stock front wheel and build it this winter for long distance bikepacking next spring and will progressively upgrade to grx 800 as components wear out. I keep it in my small flat. - my commuter, an old peugeot road frame with decent components, 2×5 transmission, fenders, rack.. Even though it's actually a decent ride it is voluntarily kept low value looking with stickers and questionable paint since I lock it in Paris all the time and keep it in my building's shared bike garage. - a 2011 entry level Lapierre hardtail I keep in the Alps at my parents'. Technically I own 6 other bikes at my family's holiday house on an island since I made them from very low cost and free spare parts, a first gen alloy Btwin (well only the frame amd forks are originals), 2 steel early 80's randonneuses, a 90's steel rigid mtb, a 60's motobecane steel singlespeed city bike and a Frankenstein fixie from an old mercier road frame. But they're more like common goods there. And two others at my grandparents (a 90's alloy road bike and my late teens 2005 vbrake hardtail) I put there for my cousins or when I visit.

I have 2 bikes one 14 kg alloy GMC Denali 21 speed with 32c tires which is the main training bike. The other bike is a customized Sava Carbon ( Japanese Carbon Frame) road bike at 7.8 kg with alloy wheels . I train on the heavy bike 90% of the time and race on the Carbon this gives me a massive edge over others .

Totally agree, just basted on first how much you can afford, then how much you need. I work at a shop so I have acess to discounts which make it a LOT more affordable, so I personally have a lightweight race MTB, and heavy but robust MTB for everyday riding, a cross bike, a road race bike, and a super cheap Schwinn commuter so my nice bikes don't get stolen if I ride to lunch. The most important bike to have though is that super cheap commuter, because it costs nothing, and you don't have to worry about your $2000+ dollar steed getting stolen.

My everyday and newest bike is a 1991 Dawes Wildcat ATB with the long gone eliptical Shimano biopace chainwheels.No suspension,just a nicely worn in Brookes B67 saddle.All for £50! My oldest bike is from 1912 btw. Not that different to the Dawes!

Very interesting. I own 2 a 2016 Trek 7.2 hybrid. A decent bike i bought new. I have 2 shot discs in my neck and a bicycle with drop handle bars are just too painful. This spring i bought online a probably a very odd for America bicycle. A Gazelle tour popular 8. It's a little heavy, not fast. But, amazing comfortable bike.

Right now, I have a carbon endurance road bike with some good wheels and some tubeless gravel tires with a smooth center line. A plus tire hardtail 1x mountainbike (don't need full suspension here in Michigan) and a folding electric bike that can take 50lbs of cargo in the back and an optional tray that can carry 30lbs in the front, almost like a mini cargo bike. I think this has provided me with the perfect balance of capabilities. Do I want more? You bet ya. I don't NEED more though. Could clip on some aero bars and get a fast set of tires on thr road bike if I wanted to dabble in triathalons. Could get some spikes for snow and ice on the plus bike. If I want to get to a location without sweating but can work out my legs on the way back, the electric folder has settings I can toggle. Don't want to leave a bike outside? Fold it up and being it in! Two justifiable reasons I could get another bike are a cheaper flatbar commuter for winter (we use salt here, it's hard on components) and a track bike for the velodrome that opened up here this year if I ever wanted to get into that (a fairly good track bike is actually not too expensive, bonus!) So yeah, if I had the space and the money... Cannondale System Six, a Salsa adventure bike, an Electra beach cruiser for relaxing slow rolls, an internal hubbed gates belt driven bike for winter rides, a full suspension carbon mountain bike, a fat bike because why not? List goes on :-p

As I say, you only really need one! A Winter bike is a nice to have and getting one second hand is not a bad idea. You might want to look at new Specialized Allezs similar to mine before you do, though. Might actually be cheaper a Again, as long as it fits and you enjoy riding it.

I'm not a hobby cyclist, a bike is a way of transportation for me. I don't have a proper safe storage at my city apartment, so I shy away from buying new, high-end bikes. I currently ride an older Giant. It's a typical city bike, with mudguards, all the lighting that is legally required, and a 7-gear, but I couldn't tell you for a moment what model it is, or from what year. I bought it because it was affordable, and it was one of the few high frames they sold at the second hand bike shop I went to. I still have my previous (second-hand) gazelle, but like you, I broke the frame at the saddle. With a longer seat pillar, I could ride it a little longer, but I didn't trust it for the long run. The one before that was left at the dealer shop for scraps, a Ludo bike (nowadays called Granville, a Belgian brand), I think I remember a similar fault. The ones before that are mainly stolen ;) Maybe I'll buy a folding bike in the future, especially for the holidays, it's easier to take with you when you don't have a car, but as you, I'm not the lightest person (probably a bit heavier, even), and most only guarantee up until 100 kg or less. I'm well above that, I'm afraid.. And importing a Montague bike from the States, or even a Bernds from Southern Germany for close to €2000 is a little above my pain level, I currently stay belof €500 second-hand...

i got 2 bikes a diamant from 1993, a bit too small for me but its my every day bike them i got a mifa 1956 rod brake bike but i got rid of the rod i would put them back but not tire brakes it was single gear then i pimped it to a 3 spd its my winter bike its fitted with spikes for snow, idealy i wont a racing bike or racing tourer,and another up right bike with hub gears cabels are a problem -2 and they dont work and it gets a lot colder i like only fillet brazed lugged steel bikes

My 1999 Stevens San Remo Tiagra 4400 has a damaged brake bridge, because I used tires that were too big for years. The bike is now retired (everything is worn out) and could be used for the turbo trainer. I have now bought a Merida Scultura 100 with Claris R2000 for 509 €, this will be my commuter and winter bike. My Trek 5500 OCLV 120 is currently my best bike with DA 7700, but I want to buy a 2020 Canyon Ultimate CF SL 7.0 with 105 R7000 next year when it is on sale .... really nice bling bling bike.

36 spoke wheels are brilliant! I say one bike, a mountain bike! Because it can go anywhere. I see people commuting on what are basically racing bikes, and they practically ride in the middle of the lane because they are afraid of getting a puncture. But I have two bikes, the other one was free, a mid 80s Raleigh with a riser bar, and it is the one I use the most for errands because it didn't cost thousands of dollars so I don't worry about it being stolen, and the panniers are permanently attached to the rack. The frame is so tall that I have negative standover height, but I don't care. I wouldn't mind having a cruiser with seven internal gears, and a good strong touring bike for thousand mile trips. And a penny farthing, just because! And what else...

I currently have three. First is a good 2018 BMC Carbon Road Cyckle with Shimano 105 gears - it serves summer months on Finnish roads and in winter on my Wahoo trainer. Second is a good 2016 Felt Carbon Cyclocross with also Shimano 105 gears. For Felt I also have change deck for rapid tyres change because i use Felt for gravel, ice, snow and also tarmac. Last is aluminium Nishiki Hybrid 2006 with added climing handles and it has traditional 7-gears. This bike is where my cyckling started and it still can serve on a rainy day or for 1 km store trip. MTB is probably next purchase but it can wait because of a limited storage space..

I have just brought an aluminium Dutch bike , for when I go shopping. I'm finding it awkward to ride. I used to ride a mountain bike that felt very agile, easy to lift the front wheel, and easy to turn. My Dutch bike feels like it's a train. I can't lift the front wheel, I can't make sharp turns, and it's impossible to take up a flight of stairs. I'm still getting used to the 7 gears. My mountain bike had 24 gears. I sold mountain bike because I wasn't using it much.

You need to sort out the bike storage in your garage. If you get a set of wall hooks for each machine and hang them alternately pointing up and pointing down the wall, you can store them in a very compact space and yet have easy access to each machine.

For the 2 paved highways I have out my front door I ride a Cannondale R1000 CAD 9 (one of the last made in the USA) For winter and gravel I ride Specialized Tricross cyclocross bike ... For everything else such as a run to the store or a light spin around town I ride a 1992 Rocky Mountain Stratos I bought when i was in the army and wanted a go anywhere mountain bike. I put drop bars on it a few years ago and cyclocross gear shifters that attach to the top of the brake levers. As I said before in another one of your videos, I have Brooks B-17’s on all three. I want a cannondale fat bike next .... just because

Not sure why anybody would give this a thumbs down, but there again there are plenty of numpties out there. I used to have a 2nd bike purely for my turbo trainer as I couldn’t be bothered to keep chasing the back wheel to one with a training tyre. Then I discovered rollers and now the turbo trainer has become a step machine! So using rollers with a bike that I ride in the summer, and have had fitted, makes perfect sense to me, it means I have one less bike to deal with and there is no getting used to the main machine again each spring. That being said I still feel like I ‘need’ more bikes so the answer is probably always going to be n+1 eh? Great channel - I always watch You Tube at faster playback speed and you look awesome peasdling at 400 RPM....!!!!

Currently three: A fast hibrid Carrera Parva bought this month for Winter riding, it's got 27.5" tyres, and is a big aluminium bike but it shifts; a lightweight road bike, the Carrera TDF Ltd, which is now two years old and needs rebuilding if I am going to use it for a third London-Surrey 100; and a 25 year old Saracen Venturer, which I pimped to make it my ultimate fast hibrid bike. Would thoroughly recommend Carrera bikes as their the cheaper range of Halfords bikes, but with top end componentry... And the Saracen I keep for emotional reasons, it kept me going for many years and I can't bring myself to part with it!!

Currently have 4. Flat bar commuter, which got me back bike riding nearly 4 years ago. Still get used for those days I don’t feel like getting all kitted up or just want a real lazy ride & Strava doesn’t need to know about it haha. 2 x road, Merida Scultura (now on the trainer), Giant Contend AR (my current day to day ride), & Giant Revolt A2 (Gravel). May look at a MTB at some point. Pretty lucky to have the places nearby where the gravel & MTB can be utilised very easily. But who am I to say how many do you need 😃

You need 2 road bikes. One for backup for those times you can't repair a bike in time for a ride. When having one bike, i'd have to miss a week of riding sometimes when it needed a repair. Its also good to have one of them be cheaper for winter riding.

I think you should have 2 (maybe 3) one bike for racing/fast rides. A “commuter” either a MTB or a road bike with thicker wheels and maybe racks or whatever, preferably cheaper that way you won’t feel bad locking it on the street. And maybe either a winter road bike or fixie or something, if you so choose.

I don't get why fixies are supposed to be good for comuting? if it is pan flat with very few traffic lights or stop signs it's okay, but you'll still suffer a bit with the occasional strong headwind. they are just massively inferior, except for price and stealability

lol or could just get a cheap mtb and change the tires to kenda slick city tires that make commuting a breeze on the road,thats what I did and it was definitely worth changing the tires even though my stock knobby tires are still in perfect shape. The slick city tires make climbing hills and sprinting on the road a much smoother experience,also they allow alot more freewheeling.

I also have Triggers broom. Mine is an old hardtail mountain bike but when one thing fails you think it's such a good bike I will just do this but where does it end? Bike technology moves forward and the money you have invested into your Broom could of got you 2 new bikes with newer frame geometry and tech. You know what they say look after your broom. Unfortunately my frame failed recently but I had such good parts that only worked with old tech the newest frame I could find that would work with my old parts was from 2012. It was only £100 and the bike was up and running again. I needed to save Triggers broom so I got this old alloy frame. I know it will fail soon as alloy frames are only really good for 7 to 10 years but I have said to myself this is the last time. The bike was originally from 2001, 2 frames, 3 set of forks, 4 complete groupsets, 2 wheel sets, 3 sets of Stem, handlebar and seat combinations, updated disc brakes, countless chains, brake pads and tyres ect. Cost to me £1000's... Value as stands...? Lucky to get a ton for it. See photo link to see the broom in question. I've had a lot of fun riding this so I don't regret it. Three in my case; One ebike to ride in the mountains and enjoy the scenery. A old but refurbished MTB to ride to work and thrash around in the mud on the way there. If it gets stolen I’m not happy BUT I’m not SOL. It can be replaced. A shopping bike for the neighborhood: easy peasy lemon squeezy. Big fat heavy solid bike with two baskets and totally upright riding. These three keep the miles and wear and tear from adding up. If there is a sudden major Issue with any of them, they can fill in for one another in their respective roles. That’s it. If I had the space and the money I would consider a nice road bike but this is japan and there isn’t any space and money is tight. Peace

Very interesting you have a winter bike, a fancy summer bike, a standby older fancy bike, and a trainer bike. But they all look the same. I have a city bike with 20 inch wheels, a beach cruiser with three speeds, and a Path and pavement bike. All your bikes have skinny tires and all mine have tires over 2 inches wide. I suspect that you cycle more than double my speed but that you'd have a hard time with your bikes in sand or gravel.

I am pretty comfortable with two bikes. Specialized diverge for an all-rounder and a specialized roubaix for longer rides. Having to allows you the very enjoyable pastime of dreaming about a third.

@@jollygoodvelo After riding diamond frame bikes for 37 years , I found that various body parts were objecting to the ride , and various other cyclists will dump the bike and move on to some other form of exercise. I tried a recumbent and the ride is far more comfortable with none of the pains I was experiencing on the diamond frame bike. I modified the seat on my newest recumbent and I installed 153 mm short crank arms to give me all the power, higher spin and better performance , that I want. Give me an eight pound carbon fiber bike and I will get to the top of a hill eventually as I am slow on hills . Visibility is the same as any bike , however if the driver does not see you , then it really does not matter what you are on. My legs are out front and therefore aerodynamic so I will put out less watts for the same speed as an upright rider will. At the end of any ride I will still be seated in my chair with both feet flat on the ground and that I could not do with any of my diamond frame bikes. Comfort and speed , what more could you ask for.

It depends on how much one can spend and how much they ride. Also what kind of riding they do. If you commute and leave your bike outside your work...you don't want an expensive one, actually the uglier the better or it will get stolen. You could always save the nice bike for the weekend rides and commute on the ugly bike. I currently only own a single speed heavy, cheap bike with fenders...perfect for riding around the community, getting groceries etc...near by rides. I haven't done over 40 km on it in one go. I would really like to get a road bike for the hundreds of miles of paved pathways in my city. I also would like to eventually get a mountain bike for the dirt trails. I suppose if I could only own one bike, I would look for a gravel bike.

Even when my income increases I don't really ever seeing myself owning more than 3: a gravel bike with an extra set of faster tires for road racing, a MTB, and a commuter/winter bike

I just have one Bike what is described as a adventure bike a Cervelo C3 stuck a part of durano DD tyres 28mm on and I literally go everywhere on it, gravel dirt, forest tracks, and roads, at my age I am never going to top an average speed of around 30kph anyway and a bike togo anywhere is for me a big advantage, the only downsize a good clean and lube every week in the winter !

My belief on multiple bikes is this: Purchase bikes with different roles. I have a Synapse, a Haro 29er hardtail as my go-anywhere-and-explore bike, and I stripped, powder coated, and installed a 1x9 drivetrain and rear rack on my 1998 Gary Fisher to use as a commuter/practical bike.

leonardmlee very happy with my aluminum Synapse. It is comfortable and stable, excellent for long rides. The longest ride I have done on the Synapse was the Copper Triangle, 81 miles and 6,000' of climbing. I don't feel like I need to replace my 8 year old work-horse with the latest & greatest offerings from the bike manufacturers. I would personally recommend the Synapse line to be strongly considered for any (endurance) road bike purchase.

I don't think anyone needs X bikes with X some static number - enjoyment of riding is very broad and subjective. As a competitive cyclist I'm sitting at two bikes, aero and TT, because I like going fast, doing long rides and competing. I don't regret these buying decisions, but I do feel like a crit bike and an XC bike would be an improvement on the lineup, so that I can respectively race and worry not about falling off the bike, and so I can go off-road if I want to. The take home message here is that watching youtube videos will not give you the answer what or how many bikes you need, thinking long and hard about what is important to you and what your priorities are when it comes to cycling, on the other hand, will. A bike is a tool: different tools do different things for you and similarly different bikes cater to you differently, addressing different caveats you may encounter during your ride. Think about the ride and find the right tool for the job.

I impulse-bought Di2! I had specced 105 on my new bike, but because Shimano are rubbish when shipping to Australia, I just happened to ask the bike shop how much Ultegra DI2 would be, and he replied that they actually had one in stock. OH WELL I'd been waiting for a while for the 105, so said go ahead :D I'm very happy though... or I will be a week on Saturday when I go to pick it up!

Watched a lot of your vids now. All excellent. You always have a good balanced upright position, especially your hand holds. Why not use a flat bar road bike (with bar ends). Have you ever had/tried one? I'm in two minds about purchasing my first "drops".

That’s a good question. I suppose it means buying a bike with flat bars or converting the ones that I already have. To be honest I probably won’t do this as I am happy with the bikes I have and I have always felt like a roadie. I do like to ride on the drops when I’ve lost a few kilos.
