imo i think it's just lazy AI design. i would rather pay a credit to play against well designed AI for a few matches than have cheating AI for potentially unlimited matches. it even shows in their console games as of today. the AI is jank and cheating, rather than being an acceptable simulation of how fighting another player could be. funny how it hasn't evolved since the 80s. this is why player vs player arcade matches and paying a fee at an LGS or event is so much better. you get proper and rewarding gameplay that makes you want more, even if there is a (sometimes) bigger price tag.

That's pretty much every early arcade fighter ever. Apparently the ai system in one of the early MK games can literally counter anything you do whenever it chooses, and the difficulty level only changes how much it chooses to not do that. So you pretty much have to depend on luck. Pretty much no 90s arcade fighter has easy ai, and this is the reason

Yep. The original playable version was the same. (pretty much, the only difference between playable and arcade was that playable only had one air fireball. I think it was still banned from tournaments way back when.) From this video, Gouki looks EASIER than what I remember him to be in the arcade. Wasn't his dragon punch auto three hit no matter the strength (and was invincible to boot)? Also, the only text I remember him having was from the win/lose screen and all it had was ". . ." My memory could be wrong though.

I had no problem ploughing through this game on the hardest setting on console, and destroyed everyone I played in the arcades. I then played the game waiting for other people to play me and couldn't believe how badly the game was handing my ass to me. At that point I knew the AI must be cheating.

@@raymondgibbs5327 The scene in was different back then, players in Japan favoured competition against human opponents so the cpu difficulty was just normal. In other parts of the world, pvp wasn’t as much of a focus- it obviously still a big thing but just not as intense as the Japanese scene and increasing cpu difficulty was one way to keep players coming back to complete the game.

Easy hack to beat him is spam heavy tatsu with shotos. Delay each one for after Deejay gets up from being knocked down.

@@MrMulaflaga That's one of the tricks I use. With Ryu, you can also time a red fireball to hit him at close range while he is getting up. You can loop him into red fireball knockdowns until you win.

He is indeed very hard without tricks. That AI has got everything. He can’t beat cheap O. Sagat acting like he’s in a shmup tho. “TigerTigerTigerTigerTigerTigerTiger” lol Zangief is *really* hard too, unless you know the secret trick that I discovered back in the day. Not all characters can do it, but most.

Yup. Back then, if done at the right time, Chun Li's head stomp could stop DPs. Also, her standing medium kick could stop moves like Blanka's ball attack, Bison's Psycho Crusher, and E. Honda's head dive, from certain distances. AND, she could air grab Vega out of his aerial fence moves. People think Chun Li is broken in 3rd Strike. Maybe. But she was even MORE broken in Street Fighter 2.

You’re playing on the Japanese rom! That’s so cheap! It’s only a bit harder than Super SFII AI. The US/World ST is the proper hard version. 😂 Btw, you always fight Akuma on ST. It’s not performance based like in later games. Continuing breaks it, but virtually nothing else. So for people that only play for 1cc like myself, Akuma is the last boss of this game.

At first, it was common knowledge that you're supposed to "not lose a round" to fight Akuma. Until I accidentally fought him way back, after losing a round once or twice (Blanka and Vega) in the arcades back then. My friends and I were smiling, but I lost that smile when I reached Bison and fought Akuma instead. Everyone was like, "HOWWW!!?!???"

@@arthursnyder6935 yes. It was a surprise, since it was common belief back then that you can't lose a single round. Some of people I play with, never believed me, until I showed them that it is still possible to fight Akuma as long as you don't continue. Another thing I discovered back then, is an easier method to fight Akuma. Have player 2 join in and use all 11 characters and beat them. Minus Bison, since it never works. After beating p2 with all 11 fighters used, once you fight the Bison AI, Akuma will appear instead. A lot of my friends called me cheater for discovering that. 🤣

The charge characters are soooo cheap when played by the CPU. Instant Sonic Booms and flash kicks. Vega dives, Psycho Crusher. I used my game genie to make charge instant and played a few of these characters back in the day, EZ mode to the max even on the hardest difficulty.

It's no fun to win though. It's reads your inputs so hard you have to turtle until it does something punishable and then you react. Japanese version is cheap but still enjoyable but World is just depressingly unfun.

On the 3do this was the first Akuma we had to deal with... the controllers were not ideal but made with super tough plastic. Akuma tested the engineering. Btw well done!
