Something often not considered is plants. You can have a weak pump/filter (or none at all) but loads of plants and it will become balanced.

Hi, thanks for your comment/question. I think your math is off a bit. Brian has stated that a 10-12" koi would weigh around 1.5 lbs. and that 1 - 3 pounds of fish need at least 100 gallons. I would therefore estimate that if you had a 30" koi it could weigh as much as 4 to 5 lbs (maybe a bit more). In that case you could get away with a pond as little as 500 gallons. But I'm guessing you may want to have additional fish so you would probably want to go bigger. Another consideration is the filtration system you have on your pond. The better the filtration the more fish you can have. Full sized koi is a subjective term. One full sized koi may just be 2 lbs while another may be 10 lbs.

A big part of that equation is how big are the goldfish? And how much do they weigh? The rule of thumb is 1 to 3 pounds of fish per 100 gallons. Depending on which country you live in, I would estimate you have approximately 890 gallons of water in the UK/Canada or 1077 galloons of water if you're in the U.S. So if you're talking about small fish under a few inches you could have a lot of fish. But they will grow and depending on how much you feed them they could grow quickly. So I know i'm not giving you a straight answer here but you would be better to start with less than more fish and watch how they grow. I hope this helps.

Brian did state 1 to 3 pounds of fish per gallon so you just need to estimate what your fish weigh to come up with an answer. Every pond will be different depending on the size and how much you feed your fish. I hope that helps.
