Monk Synopsis: Adrian Monk (Emmy®-winner Tony Shalhoub) was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional means to solve the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic and still-unsolved murder of his wife, Trudy, the devastated Monk becomes obsessive-compulsive. His psychological disorder has caused him to develop an abnormal fear of virtually everything: germs, heights, crowds... even milk. Monk's condition costs him his job, but he's back as a police consultant despite the unique challenges he encounters in his everyday life. These challenges lead Monk to hire a personal nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), who is always there to offer her assistance, even with the simplest of tasks (like organizing his sock drawer). Her less-than-subtle prodding keeps the "defective detective" on track in his investigations, as well as in his efforts to convince Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) to allow him to return to the force.

@@BeginswithPIE That's not always true. The dark might be disorienting to YOU, but not everyone experiences the same sensory experiences as everyone else. Some people far prefer the darkness. Monk is very likely to be one of those people - given what we know about his character.

We've hooked up enough people to brain scans to know that same signals are received in mostly the same way, bare unusual cases. The disorientation involved in suddenly going from somewhere with light to pitch darkness is a part of human biology, like vertigo. Yeah, some people can psychologically handle it better than others, but the experience of having your eyes rapidly trying to readjust causes you to lose your center of gravity and human beings are wired to use sight to judge distance and angles. The episode where Monk goes temporarily blind shows that he can't judge distances well enough to even navigate his house without the assistance of sight. Guy just got lucky.

@@BeginswithPIE Well I can tell you from experience that is just rubbish. Sensory overload disorder is something I have, where I react to sensory stimulation differently to the average person because I'm autistic. Monk was quite possibly autistic, too - the character was written for a time period when that was not well known about, but 20 years later, I can say it's definitely a possibility, even if the writers didn't intend that. Sensory overload in autistics can make them shut down, yes... but it can also work the other way. Did you know some people's senses can be ENHANCED due to stimulation? Their senses can function much better for them than in their usual state. It's very common for people on the autism spectrum to also have sensory issues, which is why I use that example... but it's not exclusive to autistics. People who don't have autism at all can also have enhanced or decreased sensory reactions. You truly don't know what the human brain is capable of. The possibilities are infinite, and even scientists who study the brain would never ever claim to know absolutely everything - there is just so much more potential than anyone could even guess! Not that I'm saying scientists don't know what they're doing, by the way. I'm saying they don't know everything because there's too much information as yet unknown, not because they're stupid or don't know what they're doing at all. I champion scientists who study all this stuff and give this knowledge to me - and the world. The brain is so fascinating to me. Truly. :)

For me, the most brilliant bit comedically starts at 3:10 where we see Monk lay a hand wipe down on the rung of the ladder. That's the set up. Then five seconds later the camera pulls back to show us the larger picture: a trail of hand wipes, one on each rung, and alternating in an orderly way, left-right-left-right. That's the magic moment.

Both sharona and natalie try to follow criminals by themselfs and they always need to be rescued by monk. despite the fact that he has compulsions, he is still a trained police officer and is better and taking down criminals than they are.
