So, I don't know anything about Tai Feng, but considering he is apparently perpetually angry, I would not put it past him to have just had beef with Tiamat for one reason or another and decided to just steal the biggest airship he could get, crew included thanks to intimidation. I mean, his wave only included people who were in "piss me off and you go overboard" range and he absolutely handled the airship just as a rapid deployment vehicle, leaving the crew to scramble for a round when suddenly nobody was left at the helm. Hilariously, that means the unit that got the killing blow was there by complete circumstance.

Honestly 219 casualties is not bad for killing Tiamat that's a nigh god right there and they managed to kill it with, 200 dead and 19 routed units. the biggest cost here is any equipment they cant salvage and the loss of one commander who will no doubt be hailed a hero for their sacrifice.

Keep in mind that basically all the creatures were CR 3 at the minimum and a lot of them were CR 9 so it's likely that no kingdom would go on a campaign to kill Tiamat because their most elite armies would be decimated even if they won

@@guineapork6830 Unlikely, I assume what we see here is a last ditch effort with what they have left. but even then they could've done a lot better with what they had, With range of 600 feet why are cannons closing so close? Why are griffin riders not packing some form of ranged? Griffin knights here shouldn't be doing much more than screening for that airship who should have a proper chain of command and be putting as many salvos into Tiamat as they can. Those footman would likely find any position they can between the cannons and Tiamat and try to prevent closing though there's not much they can do here. They had a lot of ground forces that really didn't do much more than run at Tiamat and get melted. this is also a kingdom why are there no supporting magic users here, or low level clerics and they brought nothing to counter the fear, your telling me the commanders didn't consider their eon wavering in the face of these odds. Part of what makes these higher level Cr creatures scary is the fact a kingdom really has to concentrate its forces to handle them but if they do the is almost never in favor of the monster, god fights on the side with the biggest artillery and the British here should've made better use of theirs.

@kubomagico8853 thats a fair point. i was more thinking stuff like a gift of aclarity or the higher level protection from energy on some of their champions. I was also co thinking a lot more cleric spells than wizard ones. Bless, maybe a death ward or 2.

Here is the financial cost for this campaign 232 magical weapons (average value is 500 gold) --> 116 000 golds 232 plate armor (1500 gp) --> 348 000 gold 9 cannons, no official cost but it was 7 times pricier than a full plate in middle age so 10 500 gold each --> 94 500 gold 32 war horses (400 gold) --> 12 800 gold 13 griffin (5000 gold each) --> 65 000 gold Floating battleship --> 20 000 gold (yes there is a pricetag for that) Total cost : 656 300 gold pieces But I didnt account for logistic. 232 meals + food per day (3silvers) = approx 7 gold per day of traveling. Lets says two month --> 420 gold Salary, commander even out squire salary so 120 gold per month for each knight (232), lets say two month --> 55 680 Funeral, each knight is a noble so 700 gold per death. (219) --> 153 300 gold. Total cost of this operation : 865 700 golds. A king make 50 000 gold per month in DnD, so economically it will take 2 years to recover from this campaign. And thats if the king pay from his own pocket, so no major economical impact on the Empire. It was just another military budget for them A kingdom of the size of middle age England had 5000 to 10 000 knights in their army, so 219 death is actually totaly acceptable. The empire should be 2 to 4 times bigger than England Decisive victory for the empire

​​@@mnmnrt 1) Tiamat has +17 wisdom save and 5 legendary resistance. Chance of touching imprisonnement is very low 2) Lv17 Wizard cost 129 975 gold each 3) lv17 are extremly hard to come by. In DMG kingdom champion are between lv9~11 4) So even if the empire has access to a lv17 mage loosing him would be actually catastrophic. And said mage would been better as a researcher, a magic tool maker or as a tactical support unit, abusing Mighty Fortress, mordekeinen private sanctuary and guard and ward to make extremly though fortress for dirt cheap. (510 gold the standarized magically immune fortress is a bargain) 5) you can make cut on the armor budget by changing every plate into chainmail and making the family anle to pay for better gear, which was commonplace in medieval europe You can economize 330 600 gold this way You can also make some funeral cut depending in your internal situation

One fun part is that every attacker has magic weapons and the attacking force is stuffed full of elites. In other words, this is more a midway point between a small party of legendary warriors(PCs), and a normal army. The former case would probably have only a couple casualties and the latter win never, proving just why legendary heroes are relied on so extensively.

This videos are always fun to watch, keep them coming! it is also very interesting seeing the difference between mechanics and lore, in lore Tiamat would be a world level threat, yet from a mechanical standpoint (due to action economy and what not) she gets killed by what would be an average military campaign in a D&D like world, fascinating!!!

Awesome fight, she left 13 people standing. This is your best one yet. I'm a HUGE fan of these. I love the added stuff to the fights, I think it makes it more fun and accurate to how most DMs would run the fight. Can you do a Demon lord next? Like Orcus or Demogorgon? I've always been a huge fan of that side of the pantheon and I'd love to see how they did against an army of, idk, devils or angels or humans or something. Also, what's your opinion on the 5e Tarrasque? Do you think its underpowered? I've heard a lot of negative opinions about it over the years.

Maybe for some lore of Fang , his village was burnt down by dragons or even Tiamat herself. Or otherwise, it's a coalition of kingdom that had enought of demons/devils insurections so they decided to kill Tiamat. Or even maybe it could be a holy crusade to cleanse the world from evil (to if it's not a original lore but it's an idea) , how their's a paladin. And the mission of the crusade is to brake the link between the Hells and material plane in destroying the door. What's sure, is that this battle has surely traumatize a lot of characters . Futhermore, they just killed a aspects of Tiamat (not fully killing herself how gods are immortal but losing this aspect could ever weaken her or make her stronger) so she can come to haunt them in there nigthmare. I think that the impact on the different kingdoms of Fang or Commander River Songs (if they were heir to thrones it could create drama , maybe they are here to show that they are the respectable heir but nearly all died) Maybe , in the lore, the human kingdom has neighboors like goblins and kobolds, like this , they could be a enormous alliance of weak monsters/people to fight a stronger boss

This format is awesome, I would want to watch a demon lord vs regular guards or a Solar vs goblins. If possible you should definitely try to add more layer actions. Also, I'm definitely stealing the using top-down tokens for troops and profile tokens for main NPCs, that combo is great to look at.

The battle was funny, but the first videos were more interesting, while being less cinematic: What was a blast was the demonstration of how many small units were needed for defeating a huge monster. I think i would have prefered to see a fight against only knights, without griffins, champions, cannons or airships... maybe it would have ended with thousand or infinity casualties, but it would have been very interesting. This fight was funny, but introducing so much unit types let to think why the knights haven't a proper strategy. Where are the magic users and spellcasters? There aren't only fireballs and such. A fantasy army in a magical world would have a magic dedicated section of its forces: turtledove as an author well depicted that in his lost legion's books.

For spellcasters, if we added mages with the ability to use 7th level spells it would've been pretty easy for them, so we opted for mostly attacking units. The ramping up of the units and commanders is not only more cinematic for us, but much more fun for us while we are actually recording it!

@D20Dilemma no need to such great spells: a shield magic would be clever and appropriate with a low level kingdom; healing ones are useful as well, so magic or rituals which enhance the morale. Like i said, there isn't only offensive spells

She did! Although the first wave of knights were frightened, the rest of the units were unable to be intimidated or were immune to be frightened due to a commander ability.

This isn't the stat block of Tiamat as a goddess, her Aspect is listed in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons and an Aspect is an avatar so usually half the divine rank in strength of the deity spawning them. 5e just doesn't do a good job at actually stating out deities, her stats should be much higher than 30 as a cap, she should have much more HP, and she should have divine abilities like alter reality, always gets a natural 20 on all attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws. That said, the knights performed admirably and took out the 5e stat block for Tiamat far better than I thought they would.
