Well I'm back again, at what point do I stop fixing this unit? Within the last year we have repaired leaks, a compressor, a reversing valve, and now we are fixing more leaks but it's almost impossible to replace the equipment.... so we just keep fixing it.

I did a job on a True prep table that frequently ate the evap tubing, especially at the fin-tube joint. At the risk of telling you your trade... some things you might offer the customer short of complete replacement: 1) True recommended a spray epoxy paint to protect the copper work from airborne acids (the restaurant had a lot of salsa and sauces containing ascetic [vinegar] and citric acids). The gray epoxy paint did help a lot, but was kind of brittle and prone to getting tiny cracks that allowed the acid attacks to resume after a few years. If you hit the open tubing work with a Scotchbrite wheel, then a couple of coats or spray epoxy, I think you could buy them extra years. 2) Order in a new evaporator that is factory coated with a coil protective coating like Heresite, Enviro-Shield, ElectroFin E-Coatings, etc. There are a number of other companies in southern CA offering similar services for existing coils. Epoxy paint the braze joints after installation. Perhaps the coil could be pulled in the heating season. 3) An engineer at a coil maker I use near Spokane, Washington, told me in response to a remark I made "How do evaporators in U.S. Navy submarines manage to not corrode? It's not like they can just pull over on a sand bar to vent the refrigerant, then call in a repair man." The engineer told me they actually made evaporators for the Navy. They were all copper, then tin plated. The food acid didn't bother tin. This the big-bucks eternal solution, but still no dismantling the building. Lastly, all the leaks I saw you repair were at braze joints. These joints appear to have minimal braze alloy fillets, suggesting they were furnace brazed. The rosy colored residue tells us a phosphorus-copper alloy was used. I wonder it the factory used a 0% silver brazing alloy like Dynaflow or Harris 0 (read "cheap")? I don't know about corrosion resistance, but their spec sheets says they are not good where vibration is present. I assume you used 15% silver alloy, for the repairs correct?

@@zack9912000 who said anything about those things? It’s important to set expectations with a customer. “This unit is old, it will break again. Just be aware of this risk.” Those kinds of words go a long way and sure their are going to be customers that try and push you even after you set expectations but you can remind them of that warning and if the continue to be pushy they can go be someone else’s customer but most won’t get to that point.

Years ago it came time to upgrade the projection system in the local IMAX theatre here in my city. The existing and new projector were absolutely massive. To make the swap, they ended up cutting a section of roof decking out and went from above with a crane. Wonder if access from above would be a viable option for some of these air handlers?

It's a theme that slowly sprouting up in many industries I've noticed. Such as. I went to school for machining and you were required to take a few courses on the design and then a few courses on the fabrication that way you had an understanding of the before and after process. First job out of college was like that as well. They wanted you to know and ask questions of the designers so you knew why they did something and to learn the assembly process so you knew way to make it easier for them.

I don't know what was more shocking to me: the sheer number of leaks, or where they installed the AHU! It's probably a better idea at this point for the restaurant to abandon the units in the attic area, install new packages on the rooftop, and extend the electrical/line sets/ductwork. It MIGHT even be cheaper to do that than to go through the hassle of removing the old AHU. They'd have to shut down for a considerable amount of time to properly fix everything, and if they crammed new units in the same area, they'd have the same problems again in another 7/8 years.

If you suspect that the issue is airborne contaminants, would there be some sort of pre-filter that could be installed in the return duct before it reaches the unit? It would also be interesting to collect a sample of the condensate and test it with PH paper to see if that tells you anything.

You think I should convince my store manager to call an hvacr person for our walk in freezer? It’s literally snowing inside it.

in florida is mandatory a secundary pan with a float sw. that certainly was difficult to do, I did one bigger but not as hard to access, we piece it out completely to de frame, even the 3/8 screws that hold it together, but not as hard as this, tip of the hat sir.
