How Many Miles Should Your Oil Service Be?

how often should you change your oil?
many new vehicles depend on the engine oil a lot more than older older vehicles due to turbos, DPF etc. Yet the service interval recommended by the manufacturer has more than doubled. many cars now having 25,000 miles servicing

My husband started working on diesel engines back in the 70’s, mainly working on buses and lorries as a mechanic, way before the days of emission control systems such as DPF filters, EGR valves, etc. Following his old dad’s advice where he learned much of his trade from, Dad’s advice, quote, ‘ a diesel engine will go on and on forever PROVIDED you change the engine oil, engine oil filter and diesel filters REGULARLY’. Diesel fuel in itself is oil and contains carbon which is a contaminate resulting In soot. I think his dad was spot on even that many years ago.

I buy a book, a new tool and dealer software . I have ALWAYS changed oil and filter every 5000mls- “Total” brand, correct viscosity, fuel filter and air filter every 10000miles- Purflux brand. Shell diesel- presently V-Power. I have never ever had an engine component wear out- including turbos and injectors. Coincidence ? I don’t think so. @@405_hive Secret to long tur o life is to allow it slow down before switching off engine. I reverse into my drive every time as well as reverse park. The few minutes taken to do this allows the turbo to slow right down. Also allow a minute or 2 to allow oil to reach all engine prior to moving off. I achieve that by putting key in ignition as soon as I open the door. On sitting in I start the engine. Then I plug in my phone and connect to car speakers then seat belt. Then I drive slowly for at least the first 4 or 4 Km depending on outside air temperature. That allows the oil to start thining out.

Every 6k miles or 10k kilometres, a can of oil with filter cost about £50, as opposed to HUNDREDS OR MORE for a new turbo or timing chain or whatever fails because of lack of maintenance. Of course engines can cope with the lack of maintenance for a while (UNTIL WARRANTY RUNS OUT) after that they are happy to sell you a new model of course. Than people complain about build quality, but really should be looking at quality of maintenence.

Give that ''transmission sealed for life'' cobblers a good ignoring too, and don't forget to renew coolant once in a while. Bit of warming up and warming down routine won't do any harm either, covered something like 4 million miles in mainly turbocharged Diesel trucks over my life, yet to have a turbo failure. Talking of heavy trucks, most of them are now on 100,000km service intervals, though they do have oil spinners, still wouldn't.

Excellent advice. I was always told "Oil is cheap, engines are expensive". 20k service intervals are a ludicrous notion, with the possible exception of when you are doing constant steady speed highway driving. Even then, it isn't worth the risk. The cost of oil and a filter is under 100 Euro. The price of any work on an engine is going to exceed that massively.

I think it really depends on how and where you drive your vehicle not just mileage. My bmw used to get serviced every 10-12000 miles(not 20000 as per dealer suggestion) however I was doing a lot of motorway miles. I have a VW golf 7, it was a corporate car and had an oil service around every 30k kms (18k miles or so). They sell those around 200k kms (120k miles) as they are close to run out of warranty. Mine was serviced around every 30k and it might have not had it's last service as the oil was really thick and black as carbon. Since then I put about 85k kms with 10-15k kms intervals, with mostly mild highway use (100-150 km/h). Not burning oil, not using any coolant, no issues whatsoever other than a worn clutch which is kinda ok on these at this mileage. I also have a VW transporter delivery van with a 2.0 tdi. Bought it with 416k kms (250k miles or so). I has been serviced in every 20-25k kms. Not using any oil or coolant, has most of its 102 ponies. I do service it in every 15k kms (9k miles or so). These can withstand with these intervals. I guess it does matter an awful lot if they do their 25-30k kms in city stop and go traffic or a steady motorway speed. Frequent cold starts and spirited driving in the city when the engine cold also can have a real bad effect on lifespan.

Also got a 1986 2.8 sierra xr4x4 we have owned since 1993...every 2- 3k miles that used to get a oil change with semi synthetic 5w30 oil, we now do it yearly as it only does around 1500 miles a year, and even at 120k miles oil is still clean, and compression test all 6 cylinders was within 5 psi of each other and well within tollerance for a new engine. Engine's never been apart, and even approaching 40 years old now its not poodled around, we run it on 5 star leaded fuel which costs a small fortune and we have to mix ourselves with addatives, but looks after the fuel system and valves, it still performs bloody well.

When I studied Mechanical Engineering (not a mechanic, an actual Engineer), 8k max miles was the preferred distance for a service interval from oil analysis, wear after that increase significantly around 10k+ miles, depending on total engine oil volume and driving conditions. I have a mk5 Golf Gt with 190,000 miles, oil changed every 8k, minimum oil consumption (a lot less that some new BMWs), and I can confirm staying under 8k intervals has saved me buying a new car. Companies extend service intervals for fleet vehicles to sell more vans, because of lower bulk service costs to the fleet company, from what I have read, because after 60-100k miles it’s on to the second owner, and out of warranty so not their concern.

Before going mobile - I worked in engine reconditioning - I still think even 10’000 miles oil change duration is excessive but 20’000 - I have seen engines which have liquorice inside where the oil has broken down and had started blocking the oil galleries or started attacking the metal surfaces inside. Modern oils are detergents and help clean away stray deposits, whilst providing cooling and lubrication. However with the advent of a DPF or Adblue systems - the engine is running much hotter after periodic regeneration -if regeneration fails - the oil can be further diluted by diesel bypassing the pistons and entering the sump. IN SHORT 6-8’000 miles old change should be the maximum. I have heard of a customer with a BMW Mini who told the Mainstealers that he would personally drive his car through the show room window as he was very disgruntled, that his car had done a big end bearing because the oil looked like chocolate inside the rocker cover area. It had supposedly been serviced according to their schedule - he told all the prospective customers not to buy a car from them as they would not take responsibility for it - go figure!!!!!!!

First 200.000km, no problems, but then.... Now we even got to call a tow truck on the way home from the garage from the previous repair

My dad was a garage owner/ mechanic in the 60s- 2000 and he preached changing the oil every 6000 or once a year. I am now 66 and never had an engine failure on any car or motorcycle. Some of my vw t4 2.4non turbo did 330 k and still drove perfectly. In contrast a friend of mine was given a 405 Sri petrol and he never changed the oil in 7 yrs. he always Boasted of it and he died before it did😂

A random point, although many of us resent belt changes one advantage of not having cam chains is longer oil life. Cam chains shear the oil and significantly break it down. Sadly fleet operators are keen to have longer service intervals, way back I used to find even the 20,000 mile service intervals a nuisance. Now I have a car I want to look after and it does not need to be out on the road everyday so I will do far more oil changes. Better I do early oil changes when it is convenient to me than have a catastrophic engine failure when it is not. Some of the other service items are far less critical.

My 2018 BMW 530D G30 has along with the usual 30000 Km official service oil change another oil and filter midway at around 14-15000Km using official BMW filters and Castrol Edge Titanium LL 5W30. I also use a good quality Adblue additive and Dipetane - PLUS - once a week or fortnight at most a constant run up the motorway at 2500 to 3000 RPM which ensures a full regeneration of the DPF. I am now at 176000 Km without a problem. Yes, I had the EGR Cooler recall done. Important Note: If you are driving your diesel vehicle normally and hear the cooling fan roaring when you stop the car it is more than likely still midway through a DPF regeneration process... you'd be well advised to sit back in and start the engine and hold the RPMs at a steady 2000 ish for another ten minutes to ensure the process completes itself and help avoid a clogged DPF filter later on.

I aim to change the oil myself about every 8,000 miles. This might get stretched a bit over winter (working in the cold is unpleasant) or on a long trip to Europe. On most cars oil changes are easy jobs. On my 2010 BMW 330D it's easier to change the oil than the headlight bulbs. I've started buying oil in 20 litre canisters. From which I'll get 2 and bit changes on my BMW and 5 changes on my daughter's Suzuki.

Do you use branded oil or just the correct specification oil ?

@@frankythehousecat2681 I've been buying Mannol oil in 20 litre cannisters from Ebay for about £50. LL04 for the BMW. And whatever (fully synthetic) spec (can't remember off the top of my head) the Suzuki handbook said for the Alto. So yeah it's branded, but not hugely advertised in the UK to make it a household name.

Depends what oil is in you want the 100% synthetic special series Amsoil put that motokote in as well fantastic stuff you can run your engine off water afterwards. I don't know the formula but it can't be washed off and is hard wearing surface maybe a ceramic

I bought a 2021 ford transit and it recomends 25k mile oil changes or every 2 years. But i will change it every 6k to 10k miles. I work for a farming company, and my boss was telling me their lorrys get oil changes up to every 100,000 miles, he was saying thats how good oil is these days.

change mine every 6k in my A class even though the indicator on the dash says every 15k, service intervals are intended to just get the car out of its warranty period while keeping service costs down.

12.5k is the recommended service on my ds4 2013 dv6 1.6hdi. But i do it every 6k, do it myslef so it only cost £35-40 for a filter and good oil. It's not worth blowing a turbo or engine for a regular service. My car is 11 years old and only ever had the change 1 caliper, the pads and discs, timing belt, alternator and thats it everything else is as it came from factory.

Our vivaro did 78k miles in its first 2 years, and was only serviced once and by the dealer who sold it to us (allegedly). I still have it serviced every year even though we have only done 5k a year so far. A question i do have though is out van is the EAT8 Automatic transmission, and the handbook says the oil never needs to be changed in the gearbox at all. Any mechanics ive asked say the same. What would you say? I find it so hard to believe...

It's every 15000kms /12 months in my country. Was 10,000 up until about 2002. I've heard euro vehicles have 30,000km OCIs these days. Sounds a bit extreme. A good long life synthetic can do 20k.

25,000 miles between oil changes is crazy, I change my oil in my albeit a petrol car every 5,000 miles in a known unreliable engine and my car runs and sounds perfect. No wonder some engines blow up and have other problems. Sound advice Jimmy, people need to listen and do not use the manufacturer oil change intervals as they don't care whether your van blows up out of warranty.

Recently Petrol Ped had his Boxster serviced . I know he mentioned up to 20000 miles ( or 2 yrs ) servicing as required ( by Porsche ) which he was relaxed about as Porsche have their own top quality oil . I’m sure they do but up to 20000 miles before an oil change for me is far too long .
