Celtics coach Joe Mazzula’s race and religion press conference answer today.
“I wonder how many of those have been Christian coaches.”
Celtics’ Joe Mazzulla replying to @VinceGoodwill during Game 2 pregame media availability about whether or not he takes pride in him and Jason Kidd being the first Black head coaches in #NBAFinals since 1975.
"At the end of the day, nobody knows because they are not in the locker room... They can look at it however they want."
Joe Mazzulla on Jason Kidd calling Jaylen Brown the best player on the Celtics

The nba made this about race. Because the nba didn't allow black players... for years.. then the allowed 1 black player per team..... bill russell was the first black coach... in Boston. Its a very relevant question... go watch the bill russel documentary it's fantastic. And it's partially about RACE... the nba has had 80% black players for decades.. uo until recently the nba had only 20% black coaches.. even less black general managers..

@@Far7rom And that's fine for someone to focus on. But Joe doesn't have to wear, carry or embrace that. He is free to focus on what he values and places priorty on instead. In his case, his faith in God and his identity as a Christian. That has eternal value.

@3.40 I thought Vince Goodwill, reporter with yahoo sports, asked Coach Joe Mazzulla a relevant question. I am a born again Christian man who is also a black man. I understand my identity is in Christ. Coach Joe Mazzulla saying I wonder how many of the previous black coaches that coached against each other in the nba finals was weird because it only happened once before and two coaches. Coach Mazzulla has mixed race parents, his father is Italian and his mother is black. I wonder how he really feels about this historical achievement that it’s been almost 50 years for two black coaches to coach against each other in nba finals.

Jesus also knew people’s hearts, He knew what they were thinking about, He knew what they were struggling with all without prior information or interactions with those people, that’s how he was able to do that. Joe can’t do that. It seems like you’re coming at this with the presupposition that race issues are somehow intrusive to a conversation about sports but in reality they are intertwined. Now if the significance of the finals featuring 2 black head coaches for the first time since 1975 or whenever isn’t important to Joe he could have just said that and still mentioned how his faith is more important to him than his race and no one would have blamed him for that.

Lot of parallels between this team and the run Boston had from 74-76… both had long slogs to make there initial runs to the finals (74 and 22) then a massive “revenge” season gone awry in 75 and 23, now a finals run again in year three… also cowens and hondo switched off as best player on the team… and an old school mentality for both teams.
