I have the 8004 but use the NX24a... fabulous. Centre coupling the subs is great... but the my band are older musicians- I’ve added a 3rd rear facing 8004 to create a cardioid bass setup! Not tested yet but once lockdown is through, I will be! Fantastic videos... and yes- I’m right with you on just how good this kit is!!

@@josealvinpalas4454 - I mic the top and bottom of the snare. I used a Sennheiser e604 for the top snare and all the drum Toms. I also used a SM57 on the bottom of the snare with the polarity reversed. Very important.... After that, hopefully the drummer has a nice sounding snare to start with but I then usually add a touch of 180-200Hz on the snare to thicken it up. I may cut some in the 500Hz region (totally depends.... sweep around a bit) and see if that gets me what I need. From there I add a Plate reverb to the Top and Bottom snare. I usually don’t have to push much of the bottom snare up in the fader compared to the top snare. It is a balancing trick. Same with the plate reverb on it as well. That is pretty much it. I used an iPhone XS and that was it. The RCF rig is legit. I have a Midas Pro 1 console, so it is a legit Pro desk and I have been mixing daily for over 10 years. Had great mentors and worked for a big audio group. What really helped me was the ability to record shows and then play the recording back through the system or while at home, through headphones or studio monitors..... you can then SOLO out an instrument and really did into EQ, compression, gating, frequency dependent gating or compression and finally effects. Hope all this helps! Thanks!

The NX series are made of Baltic Birch and they do sound better particularly in the low mid range. All in all, ANY of those boxes are going to do the job. What mixer are you using? What recording device are you using? It weird when I listen closely I feel like I am hearing the reverb in the stereo field so I was wondering if you mixed off the board plus the live mix from the camera and combined them. Sounds amazing by the way no matter how you are doing it. I bought NXL44-a Mk2's last month and now I am considering the NX45-a for a different system because they seem to be going down in price because of the new 945's just released. The system I am building will be for weddings and I want something that's easy to handle by myself. I was thinking the NXL24-a MK2 or the NX45. They are the roughly the same weight and the output seems comparable. Thoughts?

Midas Pro 1 with 2 - DL153 stage boxes. The interface to record live is a Klark Teknik DN9630 (AES 50 to USB converter) right into a MacBook. I have both, the board recording of the band that played the Whitesnake tune and an iPhone recording. What you hear in the video is an iPhone 6 recording with a Shure MV88. I now have an iPhone 13 Pro and don't even bother with the Shure mic attachment. The NX45's will do great for weddings. I have not hear the NXL24's. I no longer work for the audio company where I got to play around with all the RCF stuff. That is relatively new speakers since I was in the game. I think you will be fine with either of those speakers. I wouldn't be afraid to use any of the RCF stuff. Thanks for commenting!

@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 2 жыл бұрын
When I first looked at RCF speakers for myself, the ART 745 was in my price range. The TT6 was way expensive and for the most part, not practical for the shows I was doing. Well, for local bands that is. I was told by the RCF rep to wait for the NX45 because it was going to be a “Baltic Birch” model and would sound better. When they came in, we compared the ART 745 to the NX45 and they both sounded great. However, the ART 745 was the composite box and I thought it lacked the tightness and clarity in the Low Mid section compared to the Baltic Birch NX45. I have not heard the HDM45 yet but like anything RCF does, it has to be killer. It looks to be a composite made box. The output is crazy! It also has RDNET. RDNET on most boxes, drives up the cost around $750 per box. Plus you have to have the Dongle (RCF Control 2 or 8 Interface) plus a bunch of cat 5 or 6 network cabling. I never found that to be too useful for a set of Tops and Subs. For a line array with subs and side fills, front fills, then it would be crucial to have. With that said, maybe skip a RDNET speaker box for another one like the NX45 or even the new 3-way box, NX985-A? Just throwing that out there. Down side of that is it can get heavy to lift by yourself and may not pole mount very well. For a single box, Baltic Birch with No RDNET, the NX45 is the best I have found. 54 or 55 pounds, pole mounts well. The next step up from there is the TT family of speakers and they all have RDNET. Not much gain for me there. Well, I hope this helps a little. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks! I recorded this one of two ways and honestly, I don’t remember but it was either straight up iPhone X built in mic OR I used the Shure Motiv MV88 mic attachment for iPhone. The Shure Motiv wouldn’t always work right for some reason but when it did, I got decent recordings. For fun, I decided to not use the mic attachment and just roll with the built in mic on the iPhone and I have to say, I like it better that way. Haven’t used the Shure Motiv since. The newer iPhones or any phone, have gotten so much better over the years. I try to pick a spot that sounds good to my ears, usually somewhere out in the center a ways back so you get even sound from both sides of the speakers and hit record. Thanks for taking the time to post such a informative video! Our band is trying to upgrade our PA for outdoor events. We currently use two QSC KW 153"s (1 per side) With 4 KS118 Subs. We planned on adding one more KW153 per side. I recently spoke with a RCF rep who told me one NX45 per side would outperform two KW153's per side. Do you have any experience with the KW153 speakers? If so could you share your opinion on how the two compare?
@soundasylumlive4421
@soundasylumlive4421 2 жыл бұрын
I have mixed on the KW 153’s and thought they were “ok”. I really prefer not to if possible. They were fine when they first come out but they just don’t compare in fidelity to the newer speakers out today. They may get as loud but the harmonic distortion gets to be too much. They also have a conical shape horn on them if I remember correctly and when paired up side by side with another KW completely interfere with each other unless the “splay” is set correctly. So you don’t get more out front coverage but more horizontal coverage out to the sides. If that is the goal, they may work better for the job. I have had such great luck with RCF that to me, they are a great speaker at a better price than say, Meyer, L Acoustics, EAW, Fulcrum Acoustics, Danley (LOVE DANLEY), etc. There are no question better sounding speakers out there with better coverage area and so forth but it will cost you a lot more. The RCF’s have great fidelity, have FIR filters in the DSP and are super portable. Just my opinion of course. The KW153’s don’t pole mount well if at all, are heavy, don’t play nice side by side with each other (unless the splay is correct) and are over 10 years old now in technology. BUT..... if that is all I had and could afford, I would try my best to make them sound good and you will be just fine. Thanks for commenting!

Hi Albert - there was around 500 people at the show in this video. If I had a bigger budget, I would go with the RCF TTL6’s and the RCF TT36 Subs. That would take you up to several thousand people. Especially if you could get the Tops up in the air using Genie Lifts or something. I use a lot of RCF stuff because that is what we have at where I work. I love the support we get from them and we get the speakers at a great price. I would never be opposed to going with a different brand if money and service wasn’t an issue. There are a lot of great sounding systems out there today. The lighting system I use is the most basic I could afford. I use 10 Blizzard Hotboxes... fantastic little light and built like a tank.... never an issue. The other lights are Chauvet 4 - Plays... not the best light but I have had them for 10 years and they still work. They work well in smaller venues. The lighting software I use is MyDMX and I also use a Blizzard Lightpipe Splitter to keep the brand of fixtures separated. That way I am not daisy chaining through every single fixture. The 4-plays are on an output, the Hotboxes in the back are on a separate output, and then the front lights are on a separate output. Never a problem that way.... thanks for commenting!

However, I mixed at a venue once where they had QSC K12.2’s and was pleasantly surprised at how well they handled the full mix and at decent volume. I haven’t done any videos in a long time. Good question.... I’m not sure on that. I would like to hear each of them first. Those came out after the NX45’s did and I never got to demo those. Honestly I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them as far as sound quality goes. Portability has always been an issue for me since I was the only guy doing any of the sound loading in and out plus mixing for bands. I always wanted a pair of TTL6’s. Those things are so bad ass..... but they are expensive and heavy and you can’t really pole mount those very well. Too much of a risk.... I really like the new 3-way NX 985-A’s but then again.... are they too heavy? Can you pole mount them safely? I guess if I got another set of 8004’s and stacked them then I could stack the TT6’s or 985’s on them and be good to go... I just kept it simple for my own personal rig and if I needed a bigger system, I just pulled one from where I worked at. The pandemic put me out of that job and I sold all my gear and moved to Florida. I now play music on the beach and use a RCF Evox rig with a Midas MR rack mixer. Super simple and the wife and I are having a blast doing it. Wish I had more time to do videos but I don’t know what others would want to hear except reviews and demos. Hey Rick - I have an Evox JMix8 and a Evox 8 that I currently use for my acoustic shows now. Great little system. It's hard to say what it is you are experiencing with that system as far as a drum mix goes.... Honestly, how I improved my mixes was by live recording the shows. I knew if I had the ability to play the recording back through the system, I could get it to sound better. So in the beginning, I would SOLO out the kick and listen.... most of the time I would make a cut around 500Hz and dip it out... sometimes a FULL cut. Then I would sweep it down towards 200Hz or even further. That got the BOX sound out of it. Also, once I got the boxiness out of it I would put another EQ filter on 100Hz with a more narrow cut... This got rid of any excess "Tubbiness" or "BOOF". For the TOP end Click sound, I boosted anywhere from 5k on up to 10k until I got the SNAP I was looking for. Not everyone wants to hear the kick drum in an overwhelming way and I felt that using cuts in these areas and sweeping them around helped me to control it and put it in the mix better. Same process for the TOMS. Snare I boosted 200Hz a little with TOP and Bottom Mics.... Sennhesier e604's on the whole kit. Kick drum got the Sennhesier e902... love that mic. It did what a beta 52 in the hole plus a beta91 on inside did but only took one mic to do it. Plate reverb on Toms. Same plate reverb I use on vocals... snare got it's own dedicated plate verb. Compression???? I always started with a 3:1 compression ratio, fast attack... can't remember release time but most like fast to medium release... 60ms to 100 ms.... not sure because I haven't look at the settings in several years... LOL... After a while, you mix more with your ears than what the settings say but that comes with doing so many shows... Maybe I can look up the settings I used on my Midas Pro 1 and do a video about it. It would have to be in the virtual offline editor of the desk since I no longer have the Pro 1. I have downsized and sold most of my gear off because of the "pandemic" and now play acoustic shows on the beaches of Florida.... So, if you can record your mixes, start remixing shows at home where you can SOLO out the tracks and listen.... make changes, really turn those knobs so you can hear what they are doing...etc... create a mix... save it.... go to the next gig with that band, pull the saved settings up and see if you got improvement. Rinse and Repeat... Hope this helps! I will see if I can find any screenshots of my mix settings.

I believe it is set at 100Hz so if you go out of the crossover out on the sub it will apply a 100hz high pass filter to the Top. If you go out of the outputs that don’t say crossover out, the “Signal Link” output, the top speaker is allowed to do whatever it does in the lower frequencies and no high pass will be applied to it. So there is now way to manually set your crossover points on these boxes since they have already done it in the DSP in the amp module. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting!

@@soundasylumlive4421 Thanks mate! Appreciate it. What do you think of the 8003asii? I'm deciding between x4 8003's with x4 art935s or... x2 8004's with x4 935s or even 2 935s.

@@Vlade.Jovanoski.Official - I have indeed listened to the 8003’s. Although the specs aren’t quite like the 8004’s, I was still impressed by them. They seemed very musical... I’m not sure if the sub ratio is equal between 2 - 8004’s to 4 - 8003’s. Seems that the 8003’s at that quantity may take the 8004’s. Not 100% certain on that but I would sure like to know. Would the price be equivalent as well? The ART series boxes are great. Let me take a look at the exact speakers you are talking about and I will post back before further commenting.

@@Vlade.Jovanoski.Official - okay here are my thoughts. You need at least one sub with each top. But if you can afford more subs, say two subs per top, that would be best. Any chance you can step up the Top box to a Art 945a or even an NX45 like mine? I think you are on the right track but unless you really need side coverage to the audience, one good set of tops can cover a wide area. 4 can can cause interference if not splayed correctly. If you can only get two subs, then I would opt for the 8004’s. 4 - 8003’s would really do nice as well. See what you have budget wise and go for it. You really can’t go wrong with you are considering buying.

Sounds excellent for live band out doors. Can you tell how does it sound when five musicians play and sing along? Your thoughts on Bose f1 model with 812 sub woofer? Which one will be a better choice for live band out door and indoor set up (5 instruments with 5 vocal)? Thanks for much informatives videos.

Sorry for the slow response. Super busy the last few weeks. I have had 7 open vocals mics going and never an issue. I can’t really say much about the Bose setup you mentioned because I have never heard one. Would love to though. Just keep in mind the type of mics you use for example... cardioid or super cardioid because they each require you to place the monitor either on-axis with the mic or monitors at the 10 & 2 O’clock position. From there, you can ring out the monitors and hopefully achieve good gain before feedback. Hope that helps!

I would go with the birch boxes if possible. I have done side by side comparisons in the past of wood versus plastic or molded boxes and the birch ones always excel in the Low Mid range. It is just tighter and more musical sounding to my ears. There is nothing wrong with those 8003’s. They sound great. The 8004’s can take a little more punishment though. Thanks for commenting!

Do you have any experience with the Art 9 series or any of the slightly cheaper cabinets from RCF? I don’t really have the budget for this system yet but I want to buy once cry once and I was looking at the Art 932a’s as my tops and then 708-as II subs. This would be mainly used for a full band application.

Blizzard Hot Boxes RGBW’s. I placed two of them on each top.... one shooting across the front of the stage to light up the musicians and the other light back towards the drummer. Same for the other side.... front lights mostly get white or peach colors because it looks best on people. Yellows, purples and greens just look bad shining on faces. Back row lights have three Hotboxes per tree plus two 4-plays (Chauvet). I used two trees for the back lights because I was doing a lot of shows in venues that had a corner stage and it was easier to place them along the walls. A 15-20’ truss wouldn’t work well in that situation. I then used MyDMX2.0 as my light program. Hope this helps! www.blizzardpro.com/products/hotbox-rgbw

Deep Punch - if engaged will give you an extra boost on the low end. I usually go with this. Crossover setting - 90Hz or 120Hz. I go with 90Hz for the low pass on the sub and 100Hz High pass on the tops. Yeah there is a gap in the electronic signal at the crossover but in the analog acoustic sound, it balances out nicely. Cardioid setting - I haven't used it since I only have two subs or four subs most of the time. There is an Input sensitivity knob - around 3:00 is where I usually put it with my tops. There is a DELAY knob to delay the subs to the mains if needed. I have measured my Tops and subs in a dozen locations and I have yet really needed to apply delay to the subs. It always ends up being aligned "somewhere" out there in the target audience area. Hope this helps!

I thought about it often but for what I do, it just didn’t make sense. The higher TT line just costs way more and it really won’t be a night and day difference overall for the boxes you mentioned. Also, RDnet capabilities add another $750 or more dollars per box. Totally not necessary for this small portable rig. I chose to put more money into a professional mixing console and have no regrets. Good luck and keep hammering away!

Is this outdoor venue in Houston? Looks familiar. I have two RCF HDM45A’s and two 9004 subs. The only way to run the subs outside is to couple them it seems. They’re too directional to run them stereo and seem almost non-existent.

This is in the corn fields of central Illinois at a Marine Corp venue. I try to run center clustered subs as much as I can. It eliminates the comb filter you get when you separate them as you have noticed with your subs. Thanks for commenting!
