A neighbor, for years now sets a potato on the ground, and sets a tire around it then fills with dirt . After the potato grows a foot high he puts another tire on and fills with dirt . Keeps repeating all summer . Gets a stack about 6 feet high by fall , claims up to fifty lbs from one seed . Takes daily water though

New Subscriber! I love growing potatoes. Especially in buckets as it's so much easier. Great job getting 14 from one seed potato. The past 2 years I've had terrible issues with Slugs eating my leaves. I'll have to figure that out before next March.

Thanks so much for subscribing Mark! Yes I think it so much easier in pots but o didn’t watch a video recently of someone who did a comparison of growing on buckets and in a raised bed and they got a lot more in the bed! So I’m going to have to try that now and see what results I get. We don’t get many slugs here as it’s not wet enough so I can’t help with that. Is there a beer remedy or something for slugs? Like putting a plate with beer on it next to your plants?

I'm in the UK so ideal potato growing climate so it must be hard keeing them well watered in OZ, I use wicks in my buckets with a drip tray to allow the plants to suck the moisture up and had good results and mulching with cut grass and straw is also beneficial. Weel done and good luck.

@@risslittleveggiepatch I'm trying to grow Queensland blue pumpkins and might struggle to get large pumpkins but you must have grown some downunder?, I put two old sports socks in the middle of my potato buckets that simply drwas the moisture to the top of the bucket and my potatoes grew larger in those buckets without so give it a go as I find doing your own experiments that work best for your garden.

For a pot that size i would be using 3 x seed potatoes placed an inch from the bottom , if your only putting 1 seed potatoe in the pot then a 10 litre pot or 10" wide x 10"deep pot is perfect. nice harvest though..

If you are using the hot composting method to make compost, you could probably put that used soil in your compost, and the heat should kill any bad bacteria and potato seeds from it
@risslittleveggiepatch
@risslittleveggiepatch 21 күн бұрын
Thanks for the advice squid. I’m using a tumbler compost bin and it’s the end of Winter here so I don’t think it would get quite hot enough to kill whatever is in the soil. I ended up putting the soil in a flower garden bed that needed topping up so was put to good use! ☺️

@risslittleveggiepatch that's a good point, most videos I've seen are from Americans so didn't realise but I'm guessing your Australian aswell then cause its winter here for me too, are you allowed to have chickens where you live cause they could help with the composting while producing some eggs to eat

Hi, That looks like 'Galling' on the white star. Its usually caused by watering issues .Just rub them off before eating, if they are looking a bit bad just cut the bad part off. Never eat a potato that's gone green from light contact. Give you a sore tummy and at worst feel off for a day or two. Your mulch kept the light off.
