How Many Robot Masters Did Wily ACTUALLY Create?

I know this rule wasn't clearly stated in the video, but I am only counting Robot Masters that had a numerical code/serialization attached to them. That's why (SPOILERS, if you care that much), Zero, for example, was counted, but not King. That's why I leave some of those up to your interpretation. There really isn't a definitive template that makes a Robot Master in the Mega Man series, so we'd be here all day discussing potential Wily-made machines if I didn't give myself some restrictions. Hope that makes sense.

Honestly, I actually like how Wily only made about 1/3 of the total Robot Masters in the series, it really shows how despite his desire to be better than Dr Light, he's far too willing to take shortcuts and just steal other people's work, seemingly only learning from this mistake with Zero, who I can imagine Wily spent most of his life working on, including all of his twilight years

Some side material like CD Dramas and Manga indicate Wily made even more of them; specifically in the 6 manga the RMs are stated to be Wily's seed players, while in the 10 CD drama he indicates the Roboenza patients were his sleeper agents the whole time.

And that alone makes me think the robots he helped design or improved/finished should be added to his count. The original story behind Aqua Man's creation in 8's instruction manual is that he is a failed attempt at creating Frost Man, incapable of properly freezing the water in his systems, and thus made into a water-based robot master. Naturally, this would also make Aqua Man a Wily creation. Apparently, later sources retcon this fact, making him a stolen and modified robot instead. This may be on account of Frost Man's backstory being that he was made from spare parts left over from Clown Man's modification. This would imply that there were SO MANY spare parts from Clown Man's modification Wily was able to not only make Frost Man, but managed to fail to make Frost Man the first time around and, as a result, make Aqua Man too.

It certainly is an odd retcon to make, since I feel like those two have the connection of both being water-based robots (unless it wasn't present in the original Japanese manual and they wanted to change that). Who knows what the people behind the scenes were thinking though, this franchise definitely has its share of inconsistencies lol.

My Headcanon from the retcon is that Wily was very impressed with Aqua man's ability to manipulate water that he tried to replicate it... but failed to properly do so as his prototype machines kept freezing the water instead of bending it. This would result in Wily just deciding to steal Aqua man, but reusing the failed prototypes to build Frost man. Because he's made with Faulty parts however, Frost man suffers from robot health problems like low oil circulation as mentioned in his bio. While the idea Wily could make a whole giant from Clown man's spare parts is funny... I mean just look at clown man. The dude is tiny compared to Frost.

My headcannon on the DWN fiasco is that Wily's legal robot registration patent is notably cheaper than everyone else's, and also he just lets everyone freely choose to do it, making the process really practical and simple, making it so everyone uses the DWN numbers to save money and time, even Light gives Wily the rights when they do jobs together, and as a manufacturer, this also gives him some monetary benefits which he uses for his future inventions, part of the reason he gets spared a lot, even after all the things he did, is because without him, everyone has to pay a lot more for the other official legal robot registration patents, it's the perfect plan.

Honestly, it just makes you realize how much of a hard time Wily must have had building his army with his non-existent budget. Heck, the fact that Bass and Zero are able to go toe-to-toe with their rivals (X and Classic MM) despite being built on budget speaks volumes about Wily's genius and adaptability. Heck, Zero, despite his unfinished build in X1, was much stronger than X and was easily able to catch up after his completion at the hands of the X-hunters.

In Maverick Hunter X(X1 remake) (btw this game is completely non canon): Vile specifically said that Zero shouldve considered Vile to be there and not sigma. Implying that He ambushed Zero. Again after Zero Humiliated him. In X2: (canon) no one. (non canon), X fought him while he being mind controllered. Still he still can block full charge shots with his bare HAND. So he IS a force to be reckoned with. And just destroyed the ground with his bare HAND So if they switched position and X was mind controllered it wouldnt be fair dose it ?. In X3: (canon) no one. (non canon) the bee fell on him AFTER HE DEFEATED IT. X4: no one X5: the fight between Zero(still a good guy) and X was a draw, YET he stood up FIRST and SAVED X for the FIFTH TIME. And his fight against Sigma in the end, he still kicked Sigma's ass before exploding damaging Zero in the proses. Btw X was also just a torso in the same state as Zero if not worse before Light came and saved him. Awakened Zero fight: still a draw due to Zero fighting his evil self. My evidence?. Zero returning to his "good guy" self SAVING X YET AGAIN. Plus Dude can one shot ultimate armor X out of existence with his Genmurei. Yeah HE IS A POWER HOUSE. X6: no one X7: no one X8: NO ONE Z1: kicked the living shit out of "copy" X to the point he needed to explode himself just out of spite. Z2: no one Z3: no one Z4: Zero DEFEATED Wile before ragnarok expolde. Saving the entire fucking planet AGAIN. And allowing the Zx AND the legend series charecter's to thrive. According to the Mega Man wiki, he was designed as a military combat Reploid but deemed a failure because a bug in his programming made him unable to tell his friends from his foes, leading him to be stowed away in a warehouse for maintenance where he was then stolen by Dr. Doppler.

He chose of his own volition to do harm many times, and even when Light reached out to him for a collaboration, Wily chose to be petty instead and rejected the offer to do more villainy. Even if the board had chosen his designs over Light's I imagine Wily's personality just makes him the kind of guy who would let it go to his head and he'd end up abusing it.

I believe at one point they should have ditched the whole "Doctor [Name] Number" codename scheme and use a more generic acronym: "RMN" *(Robot Master Number")* That way it would make sense for each robot to be part of a "series" regardless of their actual creator

You got a few facts mixed up. Search Man is the 4th original Wily Number present in Mega Man 8, and King didn't create Magic Man, but he did create Pirate Man. We do know that King and Rockman Shadow were indeed created by Wily too, despite the lack of proper serial numbers. And to clear out the uncertainty regarding Fake Men, they were reprogrammed police robots. Also, the Dark Man series is a set of Robot Masters, so they should count too, and if we overlook PU's dubious canonicity, Mega Man? is also a possibility. Other than that, you got all of the most important information right. Not sure why the book doesn't have information on Robot Masters that is available in other official sources, but I digress.

Could you please provide links to these other official sources you are referring to? I'm sure that other commenters as well as I would appreciate it. To respond to your points, in the Field Guide (which may be outdated, so I won't deny your points), they say that Search Man was originally created as a surveillance robot that Wily later stole and reprogrammed with an extra head as a modification. That is why he was omitted. The wording on Pirate Man's origins don't explicitly say that King made him, but I can see now to where it can be inferred that he did and that I just overlooked that when reading, so I apologize for at least regretting to mention him. I found no sources actually confirming Fake Man's origins beyond the game's implications, so that's why I couldn't be certain for him. Again, if you have links to official sources from Mega Man/Rockman 9 that confirms his origins, I'd be happy to read them. I could have mentioned the Dark Man robots, but for the same reason I neglected to mention Doc Robot and did not add King to the list, they do not have serial codes. I mention in the description that I only counted Masters with a serial code, otherwise who's to say what makes a Robot Master a Robot Master (Duo and the Stardroids, for example) and how many Wily had his hands in creating. I should have still at least mentioned them so that the audience could have made a better judgement for themselves, however, so I apologize for missing that information. On a similar note, that's why Mega Man? was passed over, as he fills about the same role as Shadow, both lacking serial codes despite being full creations of Wily's. I was, however, pointed to a few books that could be some of their points of reference. > R20 Rockman & Rockman X Official Complete Works (2008, Japan) > Mega Man Official Complete Works (2009, USA) > R20+5 Rockman & Rockman X Official Complete Works/MM25 Mega Man & Mega Man X Official Complete Works (2012, Japan/2013, USA) These are the only official books, other than the Robot Master Field Guide, that I managed to find. Also, while the first rwo titles seem to be the same book, they are listed separately, so I did the same here just in case. But other than books, there were also some websites that have been lost to time and, from what I remember, some game collections had bonus content of that kind (although the latter I am not 100% certain on). That's the best I can do for you.

Canonically, a majority of 2’s Robot Masters are either pulling from 1’s designs or used for future robots. Many people who see this may ask why there is no DLN number for X. It's important for people to realize that Light made X as a robot that was fully free and capable of thinking. A feat no other machine Light made ever couls so. Dr. Light didnt see X as a Robot. Light saw X as a humanoid. A living creature with a mind as complex as himself. And thus Light gave X no number classification because a DLN would go against the very ideas he had with X by removing the humanity of X and making him just a Robot with advamced mental capacities.

I saw a theory that said that the main reason why the DWN series continues after the DLN series is because Wily is petty, and the MM9 DLN series continues from the MM8 DWN series because Dr. Light still respects Dr. Wily's skills.

I always thought that the DWN numbers thing was just something made for convenience. Also some sources do state that the Megaman 4 robot masters are also known as the Cossack numbers. Since Cossack has custody of the robots much how the Mega man 1 robots are called the Light numbers due to their association with Maga man and Dr. Light. So maybe the entire system is just a giant public misconception that is there for convenience sake. After all Robot Masters were going to be phased out when Light and Wily died and the entire concept buried for 100 years if the AI retirement laws were any indication. So maybe the whole thing was a half assed measure created to please Wily's ego.

The original story does actually mention that Light and Wily worked together during Mega Man 1 and Mega Man was just impossible to reprogram. There is potential to argue it was retconned, but the fact that the comics corroborate, MM11 shows that Light and Wily used to be classmates and rivals and could have chosen to work together after graduating and that in MMBN which was created as just a different branch of the classic timeline where society in the late 1900s and early 2000s focused on internet tech instead of robotics shows that Dr. Hikari and Wily worked together; it's safe to say them working together during MM1 is still canon. If you need further proof, when Keiji made MN9 he used the same plot point again.

Dr. Light's journal states the development processes of the first line of robots and wily is no where referred to. if anything, no one but Light knew that wily was one behind the light numbers going rogue. From how I understand it, Archie was using the old "Dr. Light and Dr. Wily were business partners" plot point which was a localization thing (the MM1 manual story did not mention Wily being Light's assistant in JP, for example). So whether or not Wily and Light working together during MM1 is canon depends on if one goes with the original JP story or the english localization.

If you think about it, even if less than half robot master are his creations, Wily did i fine work with his available resources. It's not like he could get funds from a sponsor or something like that, since he's a wanted criminal. Yet he managed to make more than 30 robots, create countless fortresses and some non-serialized robots. Also, let's not forget his last creation that was so strong that it kept fighting for more than two centuries (not the way he wanted, though)

Hey, just because he’s better at reprogramming rather than building doesn’t mean he’s not a scientist, it just shows his specialty was in AI development and design… is what I’d like to say, but the introduction of 11 made it pretty clear that was Light’s specialty while Wily focused on the mechanics. Maybe that’s why a lot of the robot masters can be put into exploitable patterns during their boss fights. Once Wily has had a crack at their code they’re just not as adaptable as a Light creation.

that would also explain why wily made so few robot masters, he just didn't have the skills TO make a lot of them from scratch. he had enough skill to reprogram robots, but not enough to write his own stuff. considering he eventually makes bots like bass and then zero, it's possible he learned enough from other people's code that he COULD start to make his own robot masters in bulk, but largely stuck to theft because it was far faster and more efficient to steal other people's work than pour time and resources into making his own.

funniest thing about Zero is that Wily still made a mistake when building him, Zero's programming had a bug that made him extremely violent and disobedient, which wily found out when he activated him during a test while building him, similar to what Light did with X in the Day of Sigma OVA after that Wily had Bass related ptsd flashbacks and went "yeah not dealing with that" and shoved the uncompleted zero into one of his hidden labs with the virus he was working on separately that conveniently keeps him in line......mostly pretty sure everything that happened with Sigma was purely a freak accident that not even Wily could predict, he probably thought the virus would just infect some random robot and cause some general chaos instead of someone like sigma also, i firmly believe that the main reason he keeps running out of money because he wastes them on giving his castles the skull a s t h e t i c, along with all the cash he must have used up to renovate the areas the robot masters takes over into actual beatable obstacle courses, as confirmed by wily during his twitter takeover of the official megaman twitter account a while back, his reasoning for not just making an impossible death trap being something about beating megaman "fair and square"

Asides from the numerical code issue, King was more likely than not created by Wily. King states that Dr. Wily made him after being defeated (at least in Bass' playthrough) and Wily later refers to himself as King's maker. Not to mention Wily having blueprints for a successor to King prior to Proto Man destroying them.

I willing to assume that the boss rushes in the Wily Castles are using rebuilt models of the original robots from scratch, meaning that Wily has not only replicated his own work perfectly, but has reverse engineered the work and technology of his contemporaries and even otherworldly robotics. Further evidence of this can be see with the Doc Robots in MM3. On top of his (re)programming and hacking capability and his own original robots, this feat justifies the DWN designation and exemplifies his genius and expertise in his field. Also, I’d like to believe that Dr. Light salvages and reprograms all robots after Wily’s defeats, so that’s why the DLNs pick up where Wily’s leave off.

Wily has the full developer-experience of it being more practical to steal stuff and make it legally destinct through enough rewrites to what they are actually doing, lmao. The most legendary detail of it all is that his greatest creation(Zero) fell victim to a simple overflow-bug because he and the virus were made independantly without proper cross-reference and were only made compatible later on. This is a very belated pinned comment, but feel like I might as well post it now to potentially curb some of the duplicate notifications I keep receiving on this video to this day. I forgot to mention the Dark Man robots while discussing Mega Man 5 in the video. However, even if I did mention them, I would not count them in my PERSONAL list of Robot Masters (doesn't mean that you can't add them to your own personal list). As I neglected to set down any real ground rules during the intro, I wasn't able to state that I was only counting the Robot Masters that were given a serial code, that being an "XYZ 000" type of classification. I mention this in the description, but I understand that not everybody reads that (not that some people won't just pass by this post either). If the Dark Man robots were given a classification along the lines of "DKM 01 - 04" in the games, I would have definitely remembered to include them in the script like I did with King. But, because they lacked any serialization, I completely forgot about them when compiling everybody for the collage image as well as the script. I apologize for not giving them at least a mention like I did with King. Anyways... That’s my lame excuse. If there's anything else I've forgotten in this video, feel free to reply to this post with your observation, and make sure it includes a "👉" emoji so my brain can imagine there was a vine boom sfx implied with it. The way I see the "Serialized Numbering System" in Mega Man, and that they are all known as Robot Masters, that means they are Robots specifically made to be given Android features, specifically Human Limbs and special tasks. Time Man and Oil Man weren't considered to be part of the original lineup, given that they never thought of doing so back then, especially when they had a Seventh Robot Master in mind that never made it past the development stage. Anyways, if they want to lump all the Robot Masters together with a growing number, I would label the combined number of Robot Masters as RMN (or Robot Master Number). As for what you said at 8:47, It's likely they are indeed creations of Dr. Light, but at this point (given the logistical explanation I tried to give off), Dr. Light chose not to number it as 009 to 016; it might be possible that after the events of Mega Man 8, Dr. Light assumed Dr. Wily was presumed dead, given how there was no explanation as to what happened to Dr. Wily after Mega Man was contaminated by a dark energy source that Dr. Wily stole for his Robot Masters. So after a few years had passed, and Dr. Light created those MM9 Robot Masters, Dr. Wily returned and manipulated them to think Dr. Light wouldn't renew their warranties; because Dr. Wily that evil.

I will say though, you missed Search Man from MM8. He was made by Wily under the pretext of building a combat robot with the efficiency of having two minds, and 2 heads. But, when Wily got confused and lost track about which head had which mindset, Wily ultimately gave up and finished Search Man into the robot we see in the game.

Besides being a catalog in universe, the numbers are also based on their literal creation in real life. Though this is odd in some instances, Ring man comes before Dust and Dive man because he was made in real life before they were for the game... but lore wise he was made specifically for combat, while Dust and Dive had industrial jobs before he was created. So in a lore sense it would be more sensible for Ring to be right before Skull as Second to last. Weird... but neat

Who said Dr. Wily was numbering the stolen robots? Perhaps it was Dr. Light (and his support staff) who numbered them, and Light was ultimately tracking the robots working for Wily rather than who initially created said robots. The game can give the player robot ID numbers because it reflects Light providing those numbers to Mega Man, rather than Wily kindly providing product ID numbers.

One could technically argue how Ring Man and Skull Man are kind of wily's belongings. If we go back to megaman 4, the cossack robots were all made for non combat purposes with those two exceptions. Ring Man is said to specifically be made to destroy megaman while Skullman is entirely made to be a combat robot. The fact that he's skull themed kind gives some hints as well. Also, wasn't Search Man specifically made by wily as well?

This was one of the *many* problems with that Sonic X MegaMan Comic crossover years back when Archie still had both licenses; They basically gave Wily 90% of the robot masters, even though it made no sense for him to have half of them, even in comic lore. I've had this video in my watch later for a few days since KZbin recommended it to me and I finally had time to watch it. Honestly, this video perfectly explained my issue with the numbering system. I always knew not all of the robot masters were made by wily but it wasn't until ReploidRevo debunking of Game theory's videos did I realize just how little of the robot masters belong to wily. When you look at each game and note which were made by wily and which weren't, it still feels like a majority are created by wily but when include all games in order and list them. It starts to be evident that most robot masters belong to other individuals. As someone who got into megaman through the archie comics it will always annoy me that robot masters are always using in game numbers. If I remember correctly splash woman is referred to as DLN 067 even though there not that many robot masters let alone light numbers. Also something I just want to note in megaman 6 I think the robot masters are numbered in game as DWNB for no reason. Definitely gonna keep an eye on this channel, really enjoyed this video.

A few points to mention: . Ring Man and Skull Man were created by Cossack specifically to fight and defeat Mega Man, while the rest of the group were created for helpful purposes. Also in Ariga's Megamix manga, Cossack's robots are given the DCN designations and Ring Man is retconned to have had a useful purpose from the very start (i.e. robot police officer). . In Megamix, the Mega Man 6 Robot Masters use the "MXN" designation for "Mr. X".
