For anyone who doesn't know, semi trucks actually have close to this number of gears. Most typically have 10 but some do go all the way up to 18 (and some even higher)

@@traugdor That's not true with my favorite transmission; the 13 speed. Normally, the first gear is only used in low range if you have a very heavy load. 2nd or 3rd are the more common break-away gears used. If you use 1st gear in high range, it is equal to 5th gear in low range. We call it the cheat gear because it allows you to downshift one more time before you are forced to change ranges. Mostly useful in cornering before again up shifting. I assume this would work also with an 18 speed but have never had the opportunity to try it.

Some of the old-school trucks stacked two 4 or 5-speed transmissions back to back to make 4 x 4 or 5 x 4 or 5 x 5 setups that covered every speed you could ever want, but you'd wear your arm out trying to use all those gears in a true sequential up or down shift pattern. 😋

A friend of mine is a oil field heavy haul trucker. His truck has a 600 HP CAT with an 18 speed main transmission and a 4 speed second trans. That's 72 forward gears into a 4:64 ratio 3 drive axles rear Bogie. To keep the motor in the optimum operating range.

Typically that's how really large numbers of gears are handled, different ratios. Much more efficient, not to mention usable, than a single 72 speed box. Can you imagine how ridiculous of an idea that would be?

The magic of planetary gear set is your best friend in gear ratios. Inline power delivery and, if you combine multiple of these together, you can have different gear set ratios all in a small package. The entire automatic transmission relies on planetary gear set. The other manual auto uses manual gearbox with solenoid valves for gear shifting. Used mostly on large commercial trucks. Even has an option of auto clutching with a foot pedal for those who prefer doing it manually

Say 98% transmission efficency. 2 gears boxes mean only 2 sets of gears for power to flow thought. 98%^2=96. 04% That said...if volumetric efficeny was more inportant . A series chain of binary select 1 from 2 ratios could make sense. Gearbox physical section needn't be complex especially with solenoids actuators and modern electronics. 5 binary Gear boxes in series... 2^5 ie 64 gears. Efficency 98%^5=90.4%

They don't have to be meshed together. The transmissions inside semi trucks aren't synchoed. You have to use driving skill to match the engine speed with the gear you want to select.

This will show my age but used to drive a 20 speed truck. It had 5 x 4 gears in two Gearboxes. One was transmision the other called a brownie but no idea why its called a brownie. The Brownie had 4 speeds that were 1/4th of a gear on the 5 speed transmistion. We sometimes called the brownie a gear spliter as it split the 5 speed into 4. If truck was fully loaded plus going up a hill you started in 1st on both boxes then ran through 1 through 4 on the brownie than shiffted the transmision to 2nd and the brownie back to 1st then repeat until you hit top gear if you could go that fast. It was a cummins 335 Diesel Engine with only 300 RPM working range thus the gears were needed. Later Fuller came out with a 15 speed Transmision that did not require the brownie. The spliter was built into the transmision. Pretty cool rig you made there. IF I did not know how they worked this explaned it better than others I have seen. Good Job

My Dad's old Mack had a 10 speed. 5 positions (plus reverse) and a high / low splitter controlled with an air button that you'd use between 5th and 6th. Later he had an International that had a more typical 13 speed. I don't remember the exact pattern, but I think it would go through the pattern once with an air powered shifter knob in "low", then you'd go through the pattern again while flipping between "medium" and "high" before shifting to the next slot and going back to "medium". The upshot of that was you could go up and down one gear usually by just flipping the button and letting off the accelerator. He finally got to where he didn't even use the clutch except when stopping since nothing was synchronized anyway.

@@rancidbeef582 Those were common well electric versions usual if not always the sliter you describe on the 10 speed 5 plus spliter were in the two speed rear end. those were very cool. Never used a air powered. that 13 speed was likely a fuller 13 speed that used air. the patern was like you said start in 1st or second gear on stick. shift with air 3 speed sliter set to low. go through the 3 on the air switch then shift shufter to next gear up and air back to first then repeat. in my opinion the fuller 13 was the best transmission ever made. thanks for bringing it up.

18 speed have 4 reverse gears. 18 speed is basically a 13 speed but built heavier and splitting allowed in low range.

Probably not, they don't normally design transmissions to be equal across the range. In this video we're mostly concerned with how many gears can be involved, so it's a bit more evenly distributed than normal. Usually when you add additional gearings it will be to the top end, which puts the lower end ones a bit closer together, but by a smaller margin than at the upper end. The reason being that there isn't as much to be gained at the very bottom end. Except for heavy trucks on mountain roads, you probably don't need more than one or two gears to get you up to 20mph as that's typically the lowest speed limit in an area. The mid and higher gearings are where a vehicle is likely to spend most of it's time and where the most efficiency can be gained anyways.

Stick an overdrive on and have twice the number of gears. The Laylock overdrive had a red button on the gear knob to turn on a solenoid that (through hydraulics) engaged the overdrive gears with a cone clutch; the overdrive was fitted between the standard gearbox and prop shaft.

I've been driving 18 speed transmissions for decades. Some of the older trucks had up to 23 speeds if I remember correctly. But technically those trucks had two transmissions and two shift levers. You had your main transmission and auxiliary transmission (or brownie box as it is commonly known.) You also have a multitude of reverse gears. An 18 speed has three reverse gears. The Mack triaxle I drove many years ago had 5 reverse gears and you could run through the gears in reverse like you could going forward.

Most I have driven was 20 speeds. It was a Spicer 20 Speed triple shaft transmission in a 1965 Mack that had a 6 cyl Continental Diesel Engine. The truck had four shifters lol. Three for the trans and one for the diff. The truck had a 3 speed diff that could be manually selected. First shifter was the gear shifter which went 1-5. Next stick was a high range you pushed forward on and you would use the gear shifter to go 6-10. Third stick you pushed forward and you shifted 11-15. Lastly you pulled the second stick backwards and shifted 16-20. You would start out in the first speed of the diff until speed 6 and you went to the third speed at 16. A lot of shifting and it took me about 3 months to get good at driving that damn truck.

Have driven a tractor that had 4 electric gears, + high low and 4 gears. I have no idea how many gears it actually had (much of them overlapping) but it was a lot... And the engine was so narrow in the rpm range that it had to actually use many of them, not a good engine than on paper had 100hp... I much rather preffered driving our old 1970s International that on paper had 65hp and could haul lmuch larger loads up steep hills much faster and more easy then the 30 years younger 100hp turbo charged new tractor could .

In semi trucks they have up to 18 gears on a standard 6 speed H pattern. They have a high low main and a direct/underdrive section. It's basically a transmission behind a transmission behind yet another transmission. Or you have the strange Mack design that uses 3 countershafts and has 10 forward speeds and 10 reverse speeds using the same principle as the 18 speed except rhe direct/underdrive box is swapped for a forward reverse box. So, theoretically you can go the same speed backwards and forwards

Because turbines simply work by being turned, you can turn anything that generates motion (ideally rotary, but cranks can take care of that if isn't) into a power generator.

You should look up an Eaton transmission. The manual transmission that is inside tractor trailer trucks. 8 forward gears and you can spilt each gear effectively giving you 16 forward speeds and 2 reverse.

I've never personally driven a big rig, however when I was a teenager I rode in many 18 wheelers hauling sugar beets on the family farm with my step-dad and uncle's. 2 of the trucks were 18 speed, the other truck was a 13 speed if I remember correctly. Before the 1980s many cars had 4 speed manuals. Before the mid 70s 3 speed on the column was fairly common, worked great with bench seats.

Many trucks have on the order of 20 forward gears and 4 reverse. This is done with a 5 speed with reverse main transmission and a 4 speed auxiliary shift box. Older trucks actually had 2 shift levers, quite a feat when both had to be changed. Today they use air to change the auxiliary with toggles on the shift knob.

I've driven a 50 cc race bike with a 4 speed foot shifted transmission stuck to a 3 speed hand shifted one. You went through the handshifted gears and when you shifted up from 3rd gear you'd shift the foot operated one while moving the hand operated one back to 1st. Would take a lot of building muscle memory to drive it in anger.

Generally, it should be possible to create m^n gear ratios by cascading n gearboxes with a ratio of m each. The presented gearbox used 36 cogs for 9 forward gears. A cascade of 4 gearboxes would only need 16 cogs for a total of 16 (2^4) gears, right?

That's a great representation of it. I don't think I've seen a demonstration that was that straightforward and obvious. You could even add a clutch with no pedal, by having the clutch be the first part of the pull movement changing gears. Start pulling - clutch releases keep pulling - gear disengages start pushing - gear engages finish pushing - clutch engages Neutral would simply be releasing the handle between gears, or at a "gear" position that had no linkage. Obviously, that many gears aren't terribly useful, unless you have tons of weight to move. Like a tractor-trailer rig. But it's nice to see it taken to an obscene degree, to help visualize it over so many changes. It's so much better than a low/high 2 speed. I believe tractor-trailer rigs use a high/low selector with 5 forward and 1 reverse speed, selectable as high or low (10 forward, 2 reverse).

Just build a twin stick. For example, a five speed outputting to the input of another five speed will give you twenty five forward gears. Or a three speed and a five speed. Or a five speed feeding a two speed axle. Series gearboxes give many more ratios with fewer parts.

I was an OTR driver and the most common heavy haul transmission was an 18 speed. The industry had 7 9 10 13 15 18 speeds as common choices then one maker had a 20 speed. Now back years ago they had 2 transmissions bolted up together the main and then the aux transmission. You literally could have up to 25 gears forward if you had a 5x5 but most were 5x4 or 4x4 setups. Then if you had multiple speed rear ends it got real fun. I drove a truck that had 3 speed rear ends and a 5x4 setup. I had 60 forward gears to choose from and 12 backwards. Now with the Automatics most trucks have either a 12 speed Automated manual in them or 14 speed transmission.

For those interested semis most commonly have a 10 speed or 13 speed but there are some with 18 as well and beyond that is usually a 2nd trans could be arranged differently could have a 4 and a 5 speed shift threw all 5 but the other into 2 shift threw all 5 again and so on and so far as far as I know I've only seen one truck with 3 trans a 6, 10, and 2 that is essentially shifting 80 + gears, that's insane stuff

This is a very interesting demonstration, but if this was built out of steel for a truck, I would think not only would the transmission in total would be very heavy, but it would be a tremendous amount of rotating mass, thus decreasing efficiency. Adding a range selector, and/or a splitter, you can re-use all the ratios multiple times, allowing for a smaller and lighter overall package.

Could you explain how the individual gear-selection rods work, please ? You use the red bits to push a secondary gear (which presumably is fixed to the shaft) up alongside the selected gear, thus connecting /that/ to the shaft. How ? You can never be sure the dog gear is in alignment with the face with which it has to mate.

The question of how many speeds get a transmission has is based on its size and the amount of rotating mass. I think getting beyond the six speeds may be best done with a third shaft or second transmission.

This transmission functions better than the 6sp NSG370 in my Jeep Wrangler. Probably would last longer as well.

Simplest thing is do like trucks do, then they have 6 gears and then they add 2 extra gears, high and lowe, total 12 ratios. You could even add 3rd gear and have total 18 ratios...

Rn for our research we are making a gravity powered generator using 12v dc motor.... Can you help us how to figure out how can we acheive very slow rotation from the gear that will be attached to the weight to make the gear attached to the dc motor spin very fast?

Have you ever done a small car (like a 6 inch) with a motor and a automatic 2 gear switch transmission. Back in the days in school, we have done a competition of building a car that should go 50 meter and the faster win.... because all student got the SAME motor, and battery... the only difference was in the look and the design. I make mine beautifull, but light. The speed was a problem, because starting from stand still need a lot of power, and after few meter, the power must be converted to speed. So i design a CVT cone transmission with elastic that slide through the process and got me the first place and the school keep the car for the expo at the end of the years. So it will be nice to see you find your solution to this and maybe do a little competition between 2 design. Great day have fun

could you have gears in series where you can manually pick between 1:1 and 1:p gear ratios. Ie 1:2 or 1:1 followed by 1:3 or 1:1 followed by 1:5 or 1:1, 1:7 or 1:1 and just carry on going to get 2^n different gear ratios, or you can repeat 1:2 gears and get a lower number of possibilities but they are more reasonable.
