Adjustable wrenches use a lead screw system and not a worm drive system. A lead screw system, like a rack and pinion in your car turns rotary motion into a linear motion. A worm drive turns rotary motion into rotary motions. BTW, I have never seen an adjustable wrench fail at the lead screw. but I have seen many pipe fittings and fasteners destroyed by an adjustable wrench in the field and then needing the flame wrench to come out and fix the problem.

The Milwaukee adjustables are one of their few hand tools that are a clear winner over the competion.

I'd like to see someone review Lobster and Tone adjustable wrenches. The Tone looks to have a fine adjustment with a longer screw than others as well, like the Milwaukee. I never really liked adjustable wrenches, but sometimes they do come in handy, especially in mobile situations where carrying a full or larger size set of wrenches isn't optimal.

Haven't bought, or even used, an adjustable wrench in 20 years. A decent set of end wrenches is soo much better.
@JosiahSullivan2 күн бұрын
I find them quite useful for things bigger than 3/4” but I guess most people don’t deal with large nuts and bolts. Those wrenches aren’t very common and quite spendy. I don’t think I have a wrench larger than 1 1/2”
@rbhe3572 күн бұрын
@JosiahSullivan I guess I don't trust putting big torque on the moving pieces of an adjustable wrench. To me they fall in the same category as the mini hammer they include with compact tool sets. I look at the dinky little wrenches in this video that open 1 1/2" and laugh. A nut/bolt that big is used for a reason, and probably not giving up easily. That's where I reach for a ratchet or end wrench.

the whole set of wrenches from quarter to one and a half is very difficult to carry in your tool pouch, along with all your other tools like screwdrivers and needle those pliers and stuff like that

@@CharlesAnsman My Milwaukee Packout is now taller than I am, lol 😁 No, I drive a desk for a living but love having the right tools for everything. Many are still awaiting their first use. IMO Crescent wrenches are like the Gator Grip. Everybody bought one then cursed at it.

I use bahco because of the slimmer tapered jaws but milwaukee actually has a winner in this one. I've been singing these adjuables praises for years its the closest thing to good old diamond ones from almost 100 years ago that had no slop.

BTW- For anyone interested, the Snap-on brand is the same as the Bahco. Different finish, not chrome, but same wrench made in the same factory. Bahco is available in both the US and Swedish variety, so different markings and direction, so pick the US variant if interested. Snap-on at a third of the price.

Hi Doc! Check out bahco wrenches. The moving end can be switched around: one side is parallel and the other is a serrated design for speed and hand tightening. So step one serrated turn the bolt/nut fast and then switch to parallel and crank it torque 😉 I love that wrench since I figured it out!

The worm has 1 tooth... 😉 I passionately hate these adjustable wrenches! The only one I use has a slide button, that you can move up and down with your thumb. (Like a Crescent Rapid Slide Wrench.) But I mostly use the Knipex Raptor instead of an adjustable wrench.
@thenexthobbyКүн бұрын
My thoughts are that more teeth (i.e., finer adjustment) would matter more on small fasteners due to their smaller area of contact. What I’ll never understand is why some models can do large fasteners when they cannot offer the leverage for them to matter. But Crescent’s idea for the jaws seems to be innovative. [edit] You could go the other way and use a locking adjustable that you intentionally set slightly loose.

I love the wide mouth for hydraulic hoses. Epically cat -16 hoses. 1-5/8 wrench so a shorter adjustable to screw it on and off is handy before you grab the big boy wrench to tighten it up.

I have a pure hatred of adjustable wrenches. Yes, I understand that you don't always have the precise wrench size you need, but for working in a shop, I will never use one of these.

@thenormalyears i do use them occasionally. However, they are the crappy 10-20$ ones and not actually good, well-made ones. I've been looking for deals on snap on ones. I just haven't found any yet. I think the main difference is the fact that the slop is minimal in the expensive vs cheap. That is the major turn off for me with my current ones.

Hello again, Doc Thank you for another Great Video 👍 I enjoyed watching tonight's video. Doc, if I have to hold or break torque on a line. That is bigger size than my largest wrench. I will be bringing out my Ford Wrench. The jaws opened wider than any adjustable wrench. Problem solved 😊 Again thank you.

On a little different note. In my millwrighting days we would modify our 4 inch crescent wrench so it would open to 9/16, by grinding a small amount off the jaw stop. Of course you couldn't reef on it at that size, but when you're roving around with a tool pouch having that capability saved a lot of steps and production costs.

If a group of boys snuck onto my property and built a dangerous tree house, and if they'd used bolts instead of nails, and if all those bolts were different sizes, and if I only wanted to carry only one tool up there to demolish it, I would use a crescent wrench. So far this has never happened.

I always thought with the wide mouth adjustable wrenches, it had to have both a bigger worm screw and the handle on the adjustable side had to be larger in order for it to work correctly without failing under load.
@russellpottenger8584Күн бұрын
To be fair in order to properly compare the screw count you should at least confirm that the width of the slot is comparatively the same from wrench to wrench
@gnic76Күн бұрын
I've never broken an adjustable, the wide jaw ones have short handles (6" or 8", 10") soo is it even possible without extra leverage? If I'm just loosening one fitting, nut or need it to hold something while using a socket to tighten, I'll use an adjustable, otherwise I reach for an appropriate sized wrench.
@SierraADVКүн бұрын
Instead of tooth count, as there are no teeth on the worm gear at all, let's talk threads per inch, thread pitch and thread depth. If you really had to make a precision adjustable wrench of this design, how could you do it "fireball tool style"? Fine acme thread worm gear so the thread surfaces face each other 90⁰ from the force? Deeper teeth with a higher TPI would increase strength at the cost of adjustment speed. The drag caused by a precisely- made worm and jaw rack would be a necessary side effect, and would be more susceptible to debris interference. Are we polishing a turd here? Yes... but a precision, fine thread adjustable wrench might be just the tool to have around a mill or a fixtures table....

Not that it REALLY matters..if you're using an adjustable wrench to do more than hold a fastener stationary while actually tightening them you don't have a clue.. you can use them for bending metal..other than that 50 screw contacts DON'T MATTER..gimmick ☝️
