Another thing I do on LPs is to knock the bridge tone back to 4-6 depending on the pickup and overall setup/signal chain for a sound that is more balanced between the two pickups, almost like if you want the neck tone but just with more volume and slightly more highs. It makes the middle position really cool as well.

I'm always riding the tone/volume on my 335, but your example of dialing the tone down on the bridge to 5 and 'jumbling up' the sound of the PUPs is where I start. I'm really glad you touched on that. Way more to Gibson than Slash (great player) or 'Woman Tone.' Dialing back volume to 8-9 also works as a great way get rid of the 'spike' in tone.

You should do this with P-90's, even more tones. I usually run my bridge dimed with the tone backed off a bit, the neck rolled back for a spanky strat tone, and blended like that I get a fat Humbucker tone in the middle position. I can get pretty good Strat, Tele, and Gibson tones on the fly with just my toggle switch.

@@MichaelBanfieldGuitar I know you mentioned that you werent so much a fan of it, but I feel like the trick with P-90s is to make sure your base tone is dirty enough that you can roll off your PUP volumes without losing too much actual volume. To get many good tones out of them you need be able to trim back the output.

The magic is in the blending settings at the end of the post. Another great MOD is having a push/pull out of phase switch. It gives all combos plus a few more really useful thinner quacky sounds when you’re in the middle. I like to ride that with the neck around 6-7, and then duck the bridge between 4-5, and to full up, depending on what I am playing.

This is why i love my P90 SG. Getting cocked wah sounds by turning one tone knob back and setting both pickups on. Dialing one pickup to be clean and the other dirty for solos and just flipping the switch is another of mine.didn't know any the clean boost in the effects loop. With an overdrive pedal or dirty channel as my main distortion, I'll set my gain with the pickup volume on 5-7 so i can bend a note and roll the volume up as the volume starts to die, it usually goes into a harmonic distortion.

I got a Deluxe plus Strat in 96. It has a TBX tone for middle and bridge Lace Sensors. Learned a long time ago how to use tone. When assembling parts for L P studio pot rebuild I went for .011 caps and 50's wiring with Garrett cloth wiring. All for tone. Cause I use my tone controls and the maple neck L Sensors equipped is bright by nature. Strat is my #1 usually. So pedal/ amp is kinda centered around Strat. Les Paul has 496/500 pups so can make a innocent amp squeal for mercy.

The Les Paul ... one of the greatest inventions (not necesary Gibsxn 🙊) . there is a lot to get on that 4 knobs and 3 way swicth 🙂, i seen some great players also dont go to level10 and tone 10 all the time (of course this is very relative to equipment , amp and pedals set ups ,personal taste ,etc ) , also playing with Volumen knobs and with a dirty tone(od or fuzz ) you could have like 2 setting (one cleaner maybe darker or not adjustin tone and low volume when switch to the neck ) and other distorted with bridge at full vol when switch to bridge (or near full Vol. ) .Of course this could be inversed too . There's a reason Gibson has a 45 day return policy. I'm an intermediary player that bought a Gibson Les Paul classic. Too many sounds to dial in. Too many combinations . Too confusing for me. I think you need a lot of pedals. Playing wasn't fun anymore. It became work. Trying to switch to a solo was very difficult for me. The Humbuckers delivered a more mellow tone as promised. I hated to have to return it because it was such a beautiful instrument. I went back to my fender Strat and bought a Marshall amp which got me the more mellow and rich sound I was looking for without all the hassle. Just my personal experience.

Nice work! Nice to hear you cite the players in the first 2 sections. I love Kenny Burrell and John Scofield. I had suspected you were a bit of a jazzer after noticing the pile of Real Books in the background. 2 settings for the middle position I often use are: 1) with the tone pot on the bridge position just down a smidge (8-9) which brings out a resonant peak. You can do this for the neck position instead and to my ears it brings out a different slightly lower resonant peak. 2) Turning the tone on the bridge position right down, then lowering the volume of that pickup just enough that it stops being muffled and comes 'into focus'. This is good for a neck pickup which is a bit bassy on its own, or you can fatten up a bridge pickup if you do it the other way around. (I realise after typing this that you have a method in here for a similar effect rendering this one a bit redundant, but maybe someone somewhere might find it helpful.)

Yeah you got me, I love a bit of jazz guitar. Thanks for sharing those settings, number 1 sounds interesting. I found the tone controls behaved the same for each pickup in middle position but I think if it's modern wiring then maybe there is a slight difference sometimes. I'll have to check that out on my tele deluxe as that has modern wiring... Good to hear from you again as always!

So if the output reading for the neck is 10, the bridge 15 , middle is 5, in the Middle position with neck vol turned all the way down, your bridge is now 5?

I feel like my neck pickup might be too bassy?? it tends to even clip some pedals (sounded horribly through the Boss compressor) and sounds super different in volume to my bridge pickup. I even lowered it farther from the strings, but it still feels noticeably louder than the bridge, or has way too much bass. So when i adjust my rig around it, the bridge pickup ends up sounding a bit thin... Is it normal? it's my first Les Paul. Love your channel! thanks for all these tips btw.

Try lowering the neck pickup down to a little below the top of the mounting ring. The string vibration is much wider above the neck pickup than it is above the bridge pickup. Lowering it makes it much more clear.

This is a sound that Fenders don't create very well. Also, one must note there is a right time and place for the woman tone, and it still has a place in my sound.
