Hi Adam, great video and review, thank you! I'm new to your channel and found you searching for Hubba Hubba NX 2 links. Like your videos and have subscribed (and like you I'm also a keen follower of Paul Messner). I also have the NX2 and, living in the UK, only bought it because I reckoned that I could make it into a Fly First pitching tent. I have thought through the setting up modes (inner first, fast & light, etc.) and realised early on that if, using para-cord, I made a 'bow tie' or 'double triangle' cord frame based on the size of the NX2's footprint, this could be used to set up the poles first, by themselves, without using either the footprint, the inner or the fly. If its raining this allows you to set up the fly, clamber inside out of the rain and lay out the footprint, folded in half so that the 'inside' of the footprint remains dry. You can then sort yourself out and get out of your wet gear, folding out the footprint to full width once you're ready. You can then lay out the inner and although it's a bit fiddly to reach into the corners and hook the footprint and inner onto the ends of the poles it's do-able. Equally, its a bit fiddly to attach the inner from the inside underneath the stretched fly, but it's eminently do-able; just need to unzip the inner's doors so you can kneel on the groundsheet and attach the inner's hooks to the poles. Job done, fly-first set up in the rain!

Can't recall whether you've mentioned it in your other videos on the Hubba Hubba 2 but using trekking poles to support the fly, placed inside at the ends of the cross pole (effectively mirroring the extended cross pole of the MSR Access) helps prevent the fly from sagging and being blown in if it's windy. It doesn't make the Hubba Hubba a 4 season tent, and of course it isn't designed to be, but I think these modifications definitely nudge it into the realms of a 3+. Personally, out of all the tents, tarps and bivis that I've tried, over many years of camping and trekking, I absolutely love this tent and like you am prepared to carry it and use it as a solo tent.

@@paulfordoutdoors to be honest I've had it in some gnarly windy conditions and it's held up well. I did bail once on Angle Tarn, but it would have been ok. I was just being a wimp haha. I may try some of these suggestions though.

@@dudeymcduderson Yep, you have to know when to bail, the great outdoors, and especially the mountains, can be beautiful and tranquil one moment and in no time very hostile. There's no loss of face when making that call; being prepared to brave things out is one thing but there are plenty of people out there reflecting back on 'if only I'd bailed when I thought I should have'. Just like you're obviously doing, there's no substitute for building your experience and trusting your instincts!

Thanks for a great video. I'm based in Canada and just bought this tent. I have the upgraded poles, but what I'd prefer from the European model is the dark green material colour. Ours are light grey and there's nothing stealthy about them. The grass is always greener... 😉

The Hubba Hubba is nice if it doesn't get damaged or the weather doesn't get bad. Even on the official store page for the tent people are complaining about not being able to get parts outside of USA/Canada and MSR's respond is just "Outside of USA/Canada it's up to the local distributor". So if something gets damaged your local distributor might just tell you "Buy a new tent".. As for the weather and overall durability - it's the perfect tent if there is no strong wind and/or rain. The fact that the non-European version has better poles does say a lot about MSR's attitude towards international clients.

I've seen people pitch similar tents outer first using some 2mm accessory cord instead of the footprint. When it's pitched with the inner at home, tie some cord to one corner, run it to the next and tie a knot and so on til you have a full perimeter to tension the poles on 👌

Great review, thanks for taking the time to post it. I just got the Access 2 and nervous about the flattening/collapsing in the wind. Will test locally first but if not good I'll consider sewing some sort of ties on the inside of the fly at the guy points where the hubs are. That way the hubs will be held indirectly by the guy lines and stop the poles slipping away from the fly in high winds. I think I wouldn't have bought an MSR tent had I seen other videos and comments about the collapses. I already had to get myself over the line by working around the inner pitch first with a ground mat/tarp clip solution (see Mountain Masters channel).

I’ve owned the hubba for about five e years, one of the best tents. I would have thought simple engineering would have been obvious with the pole being on top as it spreads the weight a lot more 💁🏼‍♂️

Customising the universal footprint? My red footprint arrived today ahead of the tent and did not have the expected eyeholes in the corners that Videos of the Green footprint are shown to have. Watching the above Video shows the cord loops at full stretch pegged in place outside the fly, so how do the ends of the poles locate on the footprint, do the footprint cord loops share the same peg as the fly? Then where do the ends of the poles locate, between the loops? Answers please.

I can't understand why manufacturers don't give an option for a footprint that covers all the ground under the fully erected tent, so all your gear doesn't go straight on the ground! I’ve got the one man version and it took me a bit of “common sense” to figure out which way the cross pole goes. A good way to strengthen the structure even further is to use a trekking pole as a kind of brace for the middle cross pole.

Hi, when I first got my msr nx2 i tried to set the top middle pole like this but when putting the fly sheet on it needed far to much force to fully attach it so I tried it with the pole underneath and it fits much better.

I find if you clip the fly to the centre pole first before clipping in the corners it makes it a lot easier. It is MSRs advice to have the pole on top.

With the fly i always start and end on the top. To unmount I fold it over the top pole to the still fixed end after having it removed on one end. Then I fold it to have easy access to the upper par for the next installation. If you mark this inside part with some tape you get the direction right easier because sometimes it is difficult to see which straps (red or grey) are on what side of the folded fly let alone recognizing the difference in the dark.

Thank you for a very helpful video. We're now looking to replace our Marmot Grid 2P which has had a good run in some amazing/terrible conditions, and is now (sadly) only suited to sunny days! Our existing tent had made it's way through 60-70mph winds in Lochranza, and possibly the wildest storm of wind and midges in Whiteness, Shetland Islands. @Adam, were you able to make a follow up vid in of the MSRHHNX2 in dreadful conditions (have you a link)?

Appreciate your inside the tent part of the review - 40% of my buying emphasis is on stargazing so I was worried about there being more fabric than some of its meshier rivals (Copper Spur and Nemo dagger OSMO). Looks like there's plenty of mesh in eyeline though so nothing to worry about! Cheers!

Hi I had the same problem with the new copper spur hv ul 2 big agnes and the middle pole goes over the top on that one and doesn't make a difference in strong winds I hope it does work for you and the msr, but the copper spur was flatterned and its a similar design., great vid by the way

Thanks! It did make a bit of difference but not great. It seems to be at the Y joints in the poles towards the bottom that’s causing the issues. Think i need to invest in a hurricane proof tent 😂 got my eye on a Nordisk Svalbard, gets great reviews for wind tolerance

@@Adamshandadventures I think them kind of free standing tents there needs to be more ties on the inside of the fly to wrap around the poles and stringer guy out lines and points to make them a bit more wind proof, in my humble opinion. Thanks for the review! Not sure, but the cyclone poles may be heavier. I have the MSR HH NX first edition with the DAC feather lite poles and when setup with the top pole set right, I was able to endure several severe thunderstorms in the Canadian prairies with no pole failure. Also, here in NA we don’t get that nice dark green fly, which I much prefer for wild/stealth camping....we get the white and red fly, which for wild camping is like a beacon in the woods....may as well set up neon lights to point anyone nearby to your location! I plan on buying the NX2 from UK so I can get the green fly. Cheers!

@@Adamshandadventures the cyclone poles are supposed to be stronger, but it has turned out they break a lot more often, and you can get then in the EU. The new American NX model is sold as the shield in the EU. That will come with the new poles.

According to msr the green model was available in North America for a short while, but did not sell well so was pulled. I believe they themselves commented that they thought the green was more popular in Europe because many European countries have very limited wild camping options and stealth camping is therefor much more common.

Great video! I have just bought the NX2 so good to see the right way to pitch it. I have pitched it once so far when it arrived as a test, but don't recall whether I had the cross pole over or under. Have you tried pitching the outer first using the footprint then pitching the inner? This would be an idea if it's lashing rain and you wanted to try and keep the inner dry.

Yes I did mate, it was a lot better than when the pole was below. I think I used it well outside of its recommended wind tolerance tho and it still collapsed. Really good tent but wouldn’t use it in winds over 35-40mph. Just my opinion from my experience

Not sure what’s crazier, that anyone would consider sleeping in this tent without the fly sheet in Ireland at any time of year or that anyone would consider this a three man tent. This tent barely fits two people. It’s essentially a one man tent. Inability to pitch the inner and fly sheet together is a major drawback, as is the paper thin ground sheet. The extra footprint is an absolute necessity.

I’m looking at 2 sleeping pads that are 27” I know the floor space says it’s 50” on msr’s website. Will I have trouble trying to fit these pads or should I look at a different pad. Most of these tents curl up on the sides so I’m hoping that a couple extra inches will be able to fit ok.

I have recently ordered this tent. How well does the 2p universal footprint fit with the inner and rainfly? I got the Elixir since before and two things that seemed better with that one are the custom made footprint and gearloft pockets.

The unavailable custom made footprint is a lot better as it reproduces the size of the inner tent floor. It has riveted holes on the corners where the poles go into. So you can pitch the pole construction easily just like you would do with the inner tent. It is a shame they seem to not make it anymore. I'd customize the universal footprint as soon as possible.

I think they recommend that the fly be attached to the crosspole ends before being secured to the four corners. I don't know if that's helpful, but I did overlook that step on my first attempt, and in subsequent setups I found it's definitely easier to do it the way they suggest.

Got myself two tents today: this tent and also the Fjallraven Abisko Shape 2. Couldn’t choose. Both have there own advantages and disadvantages. Bought the Shape 2 for the waterkolom but I just can’t sit up in a relaxed position, whereas I bought the MSR for the quick setup and ability to sit up straight inside. Also the Shape seems to be a bit tougher, and the Hubba more chilled. Feels like the Shape is more a tent for a few nights at the same place whereas the Hubba is especially for a one nighter at one place. Seriously can’t choose. Gotta figure something out the next few days. Any recommandations which one you’d prefer and why?

Its not entirely correct. This tent tent can be pitched outer first. This video slightly damages the reputation of this not exactly lower range tent...You can pitch the outer first and than the inner after that, no problem. Big advantage. Seems you're testing gear but have a less idea about camping / hiking. And the aluminium structure is fine. And it is for £ 450 at least. Gosh maaan...

This Hubba Hubba tent is terrible. I just bought one, unless you use this without a rain fly in absolutely perfect dry conditions it doesn't work. It leaks like crazy it is not weatherproof at ALL. The design is terrible. Yes its easy to set up which is great. But thats it. The rain fly sticks to the mesh, even in clear conditions the condensation leaks all over you. Light shower you are in for a bad night. Don't get it!!

I have had mine for 3 years now and used it in all weather conditions. Was subjected to 2 days of torrential rain and it could not have performed any better, not a single leak! No problems with condensation either. I really cannot fault this tent. Maybe send yours back as it must still be under warranty.

I have used mine 10 yrs in al weathers locations .no complaints plus it is ultra light
